Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Might as well join the club. I updated my iphone to 3.1 and it immediately started to randomly stop working. Only a hard reboot would get it back working. Now I have to drive 30 miles to an Apple store to get it replaced.

Same issue. Mine locks up and will not connect a phone call. I must do a hard reboot. I have had to do this twice in three days. Very annoying. Incoming calls go to voicemail. I went to the apple store. They said if I go to the genius bar they will tell me to do a restore. I think it is a pain. Will a restore correct it for good?

no, right now the only thing that will fix it is to go back to 3.0, or for apple to do something and fix it

My phone is shutting itself off. I was planning on going to the Apple Store to have them look at it, but I am thinking that thanks to this thread that might end up being a waste of time.

Also have this problem and it's ridiculously frustrating. 3 times/day since I updated to 3.1 11 days ago. And at least once / day the phone gets so unbearably hot that I have to take it out of my pocket and put it to the side for a few minutes. Got a Genius appointment on Friday afternoon, but I'm not expecting much after reading all these messages. C'mon Apple, please fix this!!!

I have an iPhone 3G and I've been having a similar problem since upgrading to 3.1. Sometimes when I try to wake my phone from standby mode it won't turn back on. At first I thought the screen was broken but after doing a hard reset it seemed to work ok. I thought it was just a one time glitch but it seems to be happening everyday now and it's getting very annoying. I'm not sure if it's just frozen in standby mode or completely shut off. I've been a long time iPhone user and have never had a issues with firmware upgrades in the past. I'm hoping Apple recognizes there are problems and will release a fix soon.

Same for me, after the update the phone occasionally and seemingly at random goes unresponsive with a black screen. Once it seemed like receiving a text message woke it backup. Once it came back on its own. Usually though I hold both buttons down for 10 seconds and restart the whole thing. It's happened maybe 8 times in about two weeks.

Yep add me to the list. Started happening straight after the update to 3.1 Tried restoring 3 times and no change. It happens at least 3 times a day.
Please fix this Apple! I have missed calls and am dreading the day this happens in an emergency.

I am in the same situation with the 3.01 update for my iPhone 3G. After the update my phone runs slowly, transitioning into and out of Apps, and between screens. My 3G randomly 'freezes'-it will NOT come out of it's 'Coma' until I do a rest of the phone. I have found no condition that attributes to this freezing, it can occur anywhere from the same day multiple times to once every 3 days or so. It works fine after the reset(until it dies again). This is NOT a good thing for me, my company provides my phone and relies on it heavily for ALL of our employees, myself and 2 others in my company have the 3G and are experiencing the same problems.

My issue is worse. When I put it to sleep, it freezes up as well, although pushing the power buttons don't help. If I plug it into my Mac, it EVENTUALLY comes back up and syncs. Sometimes when it comes back up, it goes into a camera mode so that pushing any buttons or tapping the screen makes it take pictures! At that point I can press and hold the power button and get the shut down slider and reboot, then all is well. This has only happened since 3.1.

Anyone else had this crazy case?

I too am having problems with my 3G phone since 'upgrading' to 3.1. The phone has gone dead once, it is slower than it used to be, and worst of all the battery life is dreadful. Once per day charging has gone down to maybe 2-3 hours. This would drive me nuts if I wasn't in the situation of being able to have my phone on charge most of the day. I wish I could go back to 3.0.1.

Well I couldn't take it any more. I followed the steps given here:

    http://spicycauldron.com/2009/09/14/how-to-rollback-iphone-software-3-1-to-3-0-1 /

So now I'm back to running 3.0.1 and I don't expect to have any of the 3.1 problems. I REALLY HATE that I had to configure my phone as if it were new. I have wasted hours dealing with this and for what?! Apple doesn't care. Never have I hated a company more than I do Apple right now.

Worthless suggestions. I have tried all of these, multiple times and NONE of them have resolved the 'Coma' issues.
