Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Same problem for me as well. Since updating to Version 3.1 the iPhone randomly locks up and/or shuts down and the battery charge life is less.

    A workaround (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2155949&tstart=0):

    iPhone disconnected from the PC/MAC
    iPhone is shut down.
Press and hold down the "Home" button for more than 10s till a USB cable and a CD dispaly on iPhone screen, DO NOT RELEASE, keep holding down the "Home" button and blug the cable, then release the Home button. iTunes will detect and recognise it and displays the "Restore" screen...

i dont think many people who tried this found success with it. restoring the phone does not appear to fix this problem.. and restoring back to pre 3.1 is impossible from what i heard

I turned of the AutoLock feature in Settings yesterday around 3pm. I have made a point to try multiple functions every hour or so (native functions, internet functions, 3rd party apps, etc.) and I have yet to have the phone lock up on me since. Also, my battery issues from the previous day are no longer apparent. The only setting I changed on my phone was the AutoLock.

Reading the whole thread, I understand some people experienced the problem without AutoLock turned on, but for me so far this appears to be an effect work around.

I will say that the phone takes a little longer than I recall to 'wake up' when I touch the home button. Although this could be due to the anxiety of waiting for it to not respond and put me back to having a useless phone.

The Home button is very, very unresponsive for me. And once I'm in an app, such as Mail, I can't get out of it with the Home button OR the Sleep button. I have to do a hard reset each and every time.

Also, don't bother trying Restore. I did it last night. It accomplished nothing except this -- iTunes on my iMac will no longer recognize my iPhone. It says the phone is "in recovery mode" and that I need to finish the Restore -- which did finish. So I'm screwed on two levels now.

Update: iTunes is now recognizing my phone. Go figure.

    It's still constantly freezing, though.

Had another freeze today. At 18.23 GMT +1. Actually around the same time it has been locking up since the update.

I had it close to my stereo and could hear a faint buzzing noise, like when a call is coming in (but fainter). Just because I heard that noise, I checked it - and it was frozen again.
That's todays adventure with this faulty OS.

My 3G that I've had for a week bricked up this morning, and even hard reboot will do nothing. Am going home at lunch to try it through itunes. This shyte is bogus though, whatup with Apple updates causing more problems than they fix?

So did everyone's 3.1 install go okay? Mine gave me an error, but later told me the install took just fine and my phone shows 3.1 as the version. iTunes will also not let me upgrade.

Maybe this is happening to people who had trouble with an install?

I had an error in install (had to force restart and then restore from backup - prior to to upgrade). Since upgrade I have not had any of the 'coma' described. My phone seems to be working well at the moment (finger crossed).

I had the same problem. Had no issues for a whole day, then the next day I got the problem you read about in this thread. I was wondered if maybe the file iTunes had downloaded was corrupted so I downloaded a .ipsw I read about in this thread:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9942918&#9942918

    I haven't had a issue so far.

We have had this same lockup issue on my wife's phone since 9-10-09 when we upgraded to 3.1. I have a 3GS and have not had the issue.

Her phone locks up after going to sleep as is described here and has also started taking screen shots at times when hitting the home button. Disabling any feature including the autolock does not make any difference on hers.

I have restored the phone 3 times from 2 different computers (different downloads) and even tried not restoring the backup of her phone to see if that had something to do with it. The problem still persists. My opinion is that this is truly a bug in the 3.1 software that does not "play well" with some 3G phones.

Going to take the phone to the Apple store tomorrow. Yesterday, they could not work me in. Wife was not happy since her phone has not been working right in 3 days now.

I've had the exact same problems as "Headers22". The most recent problems came with the 3.1 update. Has anyone found any solutions yet or is apple going to fix their ****? I suppose there will be more problems with MMS when it comes out in late September too. <Edited by Host>
