Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I have same problem with my 3G. 3 shut downs after upgrade to 3.1.When it happen battery heats and discharges completely. It destroys the battery life for sure. My question is why Apple releases so raw and malicious software like OS 3.1 without testing it completely?

Just made my appointment at the Genius Bar... I figured I might as well get a shiny refurbished iPhone before they release an update.

Well today has been a bad day with this! My iPhone froze 4 times today and the battery has drained badly, and I haven't used the phone at all. Apple please give us some advice, I am in a job that being contactable is crucial. My iPhone is out of warranty (3G 16 GB) and unless you issue a fix shortly I may be forced to purchase a cheap phone to ensure my employer can reach me when I am needed, I am in a job that requires 24/7 access to me. Please make some statement, you at least should do this to inform your loyal customers what you are doing about this.

Just to report further testing on some suggestions made here... I followed these steps:

    1. I restored the phone fresh from a backup

    2. I turned off Notifications and Mail Push

    3. I turned off Safari Fraud warnings

    4. I rebooted

    5. I synched back to iTunes

After that procedure, the freezes still happen. Subjectively, they seem less frequent, but that always came and went unpredictably anyway.

Rolling back to 3.0 is scary voodoo I'm afraid to try, so I await a patch.

Tried the fraud off option but surprise surprise the phone has shut down twice since! The deafening silence from apple and their inadequate QA dept continues! That cheap Nokia is starting to look like a better option.

I had been coma free for two days until just now. It has been in a coma for over five minutes. I'm trying to see if it'll come out and I can get the device log. C'mon Apple!

I was coma free for almost 4 days. I turned off push, turned off notifications, turned off Wi-Fi. (what in the **** is the point to have an iPhone if you gotta turn off everything for certain main functions to work??)

Anyway (excuse, my little rant), did the home button power button shut down. Presto! Worked fine...errr for 4 days. I don't think we're going to get much response or help from the techs on this one because I'm sure they're just going to hope & prey that the next update fixes everything.

    IT BETTER!

Me too I am afraid. Iphone 3G ran perfectly before the upgrade. My phone worked OK after the upgrade until I shuffled my icons around in itunes 9.0 After that some of my applications wouldn't work at all, they tried to load then crashed out to the main home screen. I did a system restore in Itunes and the applications then worked OK, with the icons in the positions I had rearranged them in in Itunes. The coma problem happened after this point. Now my phone will go into a coma randomly 2 or 3 times a day when i hit the standby or home buttons. Only a hard reset by pressing both buttons together will get the phone working. I an not convinced this is not related to the itunes 9.0 update.

Apple is reminding me more and more of Sony everyday. Their market share makes them think that they can treat customers like dirt. The best customer service I have ever experienced was from Toshiba here in Japan. The hinge connecting my laptop keyboard to my screen broke. I called Toshiba and explained the issue and they arranged to have the laptop picked up at their expense, fixed it in one day and returned it the following day. It didn't cost me anything even though the computer was past the warranty period. That's service! Apple has great design, but their customer service falls very short of my expectations. I now have much greater respect for consumer rights activists. So much for the 1984 doesn't have to be like 1984 approach.

I just got off the phone with a product specialist who acknowledged that this is a known issue and there is possible a 3.1.1 coming soon to fix the problem. In the meantime, he extended my warranty and he'll allow me to do a one time hardware exchange.

Moral of the story, call apple care or visit an apple store and be polite!

SingingFriar, what was the tech's name?

Maybe I should keep calling back until I find a tech that will acknowledge the issue.

For me also, out of the blue it shuts down and then Have to make a hard reset to get it to boot up again, that usually takes like forever.

Decided to bite the bullet 2 days ago and update to 3.1 and now I regret it. I get total lockups requiring a hard reboot and dropped calls, unable to connect to the network for mail and updates randomly etc etc etc.

I hope a fix comes out soon as I am seriously ****** about this....
