Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

*** do I have to reply to a dozen separate posts to day the 3.0.1 *****? My iphone 3G is taking. Who is writing this crap, Microsoft? Battery life went from 2 days to about 6 hours. My iPhone stalls - bricks up- lags, hangs, loses calendar updates, loses address book updates. Who let this turkey loose? More to the point, fix it. hit me back at yalie@mac.com You can identify me as the guy who picked a Performa and OS 7.5 back when you were waiting for your baby teeth to drop out. In case you didn't get it, Steve, ***.

AAAARGH!!! I guess maybe my problem fits in here.
Tried to update to 3.1 by synching with iTunes. Upon ding so, iPhone turned off, then when turned on I got the Connect To iTunes Screen on the iPhone, but when doing so, I got a message that I had to restore/ I tried to Restore but I get an error message "The phone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (2006)."
    Now I have no phone!

Marcus, if you wait 5-10 minutes, does it come back on? Quite a few people here report that.

No, not saying that's the answer, just that the phone does appear to recover on it's own.

Fricken update . . . same here, my iphone has shut down 8 times today. I was going to do a restore, but read here that it doesn't help. APPLE, get on it. If I had to make an emergency call, I'd have to wait at least 2 minutes. Apple needs to fix this NOW. If I pay AT&T late, I get bumped with a $35. "turn it back on" fee. Can we get Apple to pay us $35. each time our phones shut down?!!!

Roger, I have not tried this. I will do that next time It happens. Yet, this presents no solution in general, just an observation of faulty behaviour.

    Obviously!

I don't understand who the **** is giving the stupid "turn fraud detection off" advice.

All that it does is to check your submitted URLs against a database to make sure it's not an attack/phishing website. There is absolutely no way that could cause the coma mode.

Even if in the impossible case that was the reason it should have happened during browsing and no other activity.

Please do not follow random advice.

The same problems that all. I think apple should provide the downgrade to v.3.0 within itunes while this issue is discussed. Incredible 2 weeks without any solution. Here in brazil is worse, because we dont have how exchange our iphone at apple store. Really shameful. I thought was the iphone the greatest invention of recent times...but if it continues...

I'm also experiencing random iPhone comas thanks to the 3.1 upgrade.
Worst part is that the Apple support reps are in complete denial.
They even asked for $29.95 to assist me. I've been a big Apple fan but
this is bush league. Apple has become Microsoft.

I am also having this issue since 3.1 upgrade, on top of the battery draining much faster than usual.

Well, every day it's something slightly new and different, but still not working right. Last night my phone went into a coma that was so deep that I couldn't actually wake it with home button + reset button after several tries. I decided it might just be a severely drained battery (though I'd been using the phone and it had nearly charged battery just 15 mins earlier) so I plugged it in. Still no go, but after coming back a few mins later, the hard reset was successful, battery mostly full. (???)

Today no crashes at all during the afternoon, but my battery was nearly depleted after just 6 hours in my pocket with zero use! That's roughly the same experience as a couple days ago. I'd initially seen the battery life complaints about OS 3.1 and didn't understand them-- but I guess it's just because I hadn't had the phone stay alive for enough consecute hours to be able to gauge just how short the life was nowadays in "normal" operation.

I've turned off mostly everything except wifi, and also calendar syncing via entourage to gCal, since I rely on that for work. I've submitted bug reports but nobody every asked me for my crash logs, so I haven't been able to provide them. (Unfortunately, I'm also usually not near a mac when I have the crashes, since by a sad coincidence of planned obsolescence, my G5 tower had failure by coolant leak last week, too)

As of Tuesday, this became a known issue to Apple Tier II Tech Support.
I recommend calling in and ask to speak to a product specialist regarding a firmware bug which locks up the phone. They are collecting information to try and resolve the issue.

I can leave my iphone on my desk at work all day... no phone calls, no e-mail checks, no poking around on the apps...

by the time I go home.. the battery is done! gone! no more!

    WHAT THE **?

switch off notifications, lock the phone - all the "recommendations" on the support page.. makes no bloody difference!
