Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Adding my name to the list.

iPhone 3G, update to OS 3.1, factory reset did not help.

After the 3.1 update, the phone only locked up once in a while. Now my iPhone 3G locks up AT LEAST twice a day for the past 3 days. There's supposed to be some update today for MMS functionality so hopefully it gets fixed today.

I have received an email from Apple Europe, dated September 25 and timed at 13.03, recommending me to "Check out all the great features of the free iPhone OS 3.1 Software Update". My wife received the same email (unlike me, she doesn't have an iPhone, working or not). Maybe Apple are moving up to a new level of bravado?

Wonder how many phones are affected?

    Maybe 1 in 10?

If so, then replacing phones will have success rate of 90%

Should buy them time until they can work out what the heck it is that is causing it!

Its an annoyance, sure, but losing a whole day in a freak traffic jam wouldn't put me off travelling on motorways.

Add me to the ever-growing list. Total shutdown coma at least 3x per day. Hard reset is the only way to re-start. Dangerous because I use my iPhone for emergency calls (it is my only phone). Apple are going to get sued on this one if they don't sort this out soon.

I'll throw my 2 cents in. I upgraded when the 3.1 release came out and didn't experience this problem until just yesterday. The only thing that was different prior to the shut down is I had location services on. Normally I'll leave it off to conserve battery. Also my phone is never powered down, if that makes any difference.

Just wanted to note that I was experimenting with settings, and when I turned OFF 3G my phone didn't lock up. 2 days and counting. I also just updated to the new carrier settings for MMS, wonder if that will help at all? I turned 3G back on so we'll see.

Great, so we revert back to 2g just to get basic usability back? COME ON PEOPLE, this is outrageous by Apple. They should fix this rather than rely on people fiddling with settings. Wait, I have another idea. If I turn it off altogether and don't use it at all .. it does not crash!

I have the same issue, so add me to the list. And I live in Mexico, so nothing to do with the carrier. Apple ***** at delivering new software. It is as if they consider all their users "QA Testers".

Add me to the list as well. 3.1 worked for a while, and now will randomly shut down for no reason. 1-2 times a day typically. Usually when I push the power button to turn the screen off to save power. I have had a couple of occasions where I was not sure if that was the case.
However, I do believe that my phone is slower to respond than before. Also, it will get pretty hot at times. Also, the battery will drain quickly and completely for no apparent reason.

Add me to the list. My phone has been shutting down at least 5 times a day since the upgrade. Really annoying.
