Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I'm also having this problem. It seems to happen when I lock the phone or end a phone call and is happening quite regularly.

    Dear Mr. Jobs,

I am totally ****** about these misterious shutdowns of my iPhone 3G after "upgrading" to OS 3.1.
14 days have gone and I've lost calls, SMS and my faith in "good Apple software".

Please notice that I am the only guy having an iPhone as an official business phone in our company. I've always been laughing about the PC guys using MS Software in our company and their problems whilst my MacBook Pro has been working fine.

But Mr. Jobs. These guys are laughing about me and my buggy Apple Software on the iPhone now. I also do not think that our global IT departement which phoned with T-Mobile today will prologue the iPhone experiment in our company. Our smart business-guy from T-Mobile just said: That's an Apple problem and we can't help... so what? Help yourself?

So ... I'll take my old but working Nokia out of the box and ...

HURRY UP APPLE!!! Are you all sleeping??? A TELEPHONE IS NOT A COMPUTER. Hurry up guys. Steve, give them a kick in the ***!

So iTunes won't even push out the new carrier file for MMS unless you have 3.1 installed. ARE YOU KIDDING ME APPLE?!?! I hate you so much.

Fortunately, there IS a work around for those of us that have restored back to 3.0.1.

Download the new carrier file here: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/29849/ATT_US.ipcc

And then use these instructions to install it with iTunes: http://www.appleiphoneschool.com/2009/09/12/how-to-enable-mms-picture-messaging- on-your-iphone/

Turn off 3G under setting, general, network and turn it off. I have had no lock ups since over a day now!!! It was doing every hour before. Yes you will be using the EDGE network and it works pretty good for now until Apple fixes this problem. Hope this helps you!

The 3G fix doesn't work. I don't even use 3G and the phone keeps turning off.

Well I understand the topic is "Mysterious shutdowns..." however, I don't think it's shutting down...

I've had it where I press the Sleep/Wake button and nothing shows up. Then, about a minute later, I pull out the phone, and the screen is at my lock screen. It's probably not shutting down, but it's just frozen. I've, of course, had the temptation that the phone shutdown mysteriously, but I've been having freezing problems with my iPhone which leads me to think it's just frozen while the screen is off so it seems that it shut down.

    But that's just me. >_<

At least your phone works at all Since trying to update to 3.1 my phone has completely bricked. All I can get is the cable/disc screen, or the Apple icon.

Restore won't work; I get an error code 13 every time I try. Took it to the AT&T Store to see if they could Restore it for me (thought maybe my cable was bad or something), same error for them.

Hopefully the Apple store can help.

total random thought...i just updated my iPhone 3g (that currently has the problematic 3.1 software) through iTunes 9.0 to get the MMS update so I can now send MMS messages through the AT&T network.

read more about the update here: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10361877-233.html

I wonder if perhaps Apple snuck in a quick fix to whatever's been causing the phones to go into coma mode and drain the battery. I'm keeping an eye on my phone since the update (1 hour ago) and crossing my fingers.

several times during this whole 3.1 freeze up I have been at work. and i will push the lock button to the time. I then realize its froze on me. I just push it back in my pocket and then i will check it again and its working. but i have noticed it does loose service and then it jumps back into service during all of this.

It's been about a week since I could get "the internet" on my phone, and I've had the phone part give up several times. I can send normal texts, but MMS doesn't work. Tiresome.

I swapped out my almost out of warranty 3G 16B today at the Apple Store. Let us hope the new one does not have the same issues.

Has anyone with problems NOT contacted official apple support?

I have made a genius appointment, but just done a full restore.

Don't know if I want to see a coma or not now?
