Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

not to beat the horse dead but...

I've had the random shutdown and bricking problems at least once a day since I uploaded 3.1. No issues before that. Had my iphone since early july.

We need 3.1 fixed or a way to revert to 3.0.1

Hello, I'm from Brazil and I've just bought my first Apple good and my Experience was terrible. I bought an iPhone 3G and when I installed the iTunes 9, it updated the iPhone to 3.1 OS. After that, my life becomes in ****... It shuts down several time every day and its battery goes faster than my old HTC Diamond with WM 6.1...

What is Apple's position about this? Where is Jobs now?

I updated my iPhone for the frst time today to version 3.1 I restartedmy phone and when I turned it back on it wasn't updated. I plugged it back into my computer to see if I could redownload. When my phone turned on it started to sync as usual. I have a slow computer so when I came back about an hour later the syncing was still not done. I got a message saying that the update had an error please reset your iPhone by replugging it. I did and now the screen is stuck on the apple logo and I am trying to wait until the battery dies to see if it will still freeze.

Has anyone heard anything from apple about this issue?? Is there a planed bugfix release?
Apple has been my choice cause of the stability in their software. But i guess that i have to start thinking of another cellphone device. 3.1 is a pice of crap

I figure if I reply to every thread covering this topic, it will be like a petition of sorts in the hopes of inspiring apple to do something about this horrible problem which is causing me, among others, to miss countless calls (from work as well as friends).

I'm one of the masses that is experiencing phone coma on a DAILY basis. only thing that is (maybe?) helping is to not use the sleep/off button but rather let the phone go to sleep on its own. the unnerving thing is that I never know when I've missed calls. if my phone is particularly quiet for hours on end, I guess I just need to hard reboot it or power it down and back on again in order to see if I've missed any calls, for it's only then that I discover messages/voicemails that I missed while the phone was in coma mode.

UPDATE: 2 hours after installing the MMS update thru iTunes and my phone hasn't bricked once and gone into coma mode. also the phone's battery meter hasn't budged, it's still almost full.

when i updated my iphone 3g to the 3.1 software 2 weeks ago, it was going into coma mode almost every other hour, and wouldn't hold a full charge past 1 hour.

i highly suspect the MMS update for AT&T iphone users probably contains a patch/fix for the problems we've experienced with the 3.1 software. I suggest anyone experiencing problems definitely give it a try. certainly won't do anything worse to the phone that apple hasn't done already imo.

Wishful thinking. It will be back for you eventually. The problem won't be fixed until it is fixed, so to speak.

    Just to be clear:

    1) A refurb will not necessarily solve your problem. I'm on my 3rd phone and still have freezes with 3.1.

    2) The problem is 3.1, but you can't "officially" downgrade to 3.01. There are methods posted on the net, but you can't do it in iTunes, and the Genius bar can't do it for you.

    3) The only way to get 3.01 back is to go to Apple, get a refurb that is on 3.01. By doing this, you will not be able to restore from backup, and will lose all of your various data contained in each of your apps (i.e. Google maps bookmarks, Stanza ebook downloads, save game points in various games, etc.).

I have an appointment to get a 4th replacement today after 3 epic fails on 3.1. Apple here in Tokyo has told me that my only option is to take a refurb with 3.01 or delete all of my applications and try adding one at a time until I solve the mystery of the comatose phones myself.

I also agree that Apple doesn't care about us, no matter how vocal we are. That has been made loud and clear to me as I've worked my way up the chain from regular genius bar staff to the so-called "specialists" and shop managers. I think the only recourse we have as consumers at this point is to report any seemingly "unfair" business practices to consumer affairs divisions in our respective countries.

It still seems odd to me that Apple can break someone's phone with a software update, not allow them to downgrade the OS to the original version, and refuse to help them if they don't have an extended warranty. That seems very shady and something more than just poor customer service.

Because only in the tech world is this acceptable behavior. Apple knows that the majority of their users aren't older established customers with the power to really make any heads roll. This is how the tech industry has always rolled. I've never heard of such garbage come from the techs at Apple & with the most "ho hum" attitudes like just give it a couple of days.

Why not do a soft roll out with JUST THE APPLE TECHNICIANS iPhones, have them go through all the "comatose" & problems. Then fix it & then do a worldwide release? And please don't say BETA because I've heard several times that the Beta version of 3.1 & MMS has worked flawlessly.......(at least compared to the public roll out). Just shameful!

I visited Genius Bar two times for this reason. At the first time, the staff said that the system would be jammed and it would be ok after reseting and then she reset to the factory default with 3.1. I restored my data from iTunes, but there had frozen several times per day.

I visited Genius Bar again, and another staff reset it again as a factory default, and she recommended me not to restore from the old data but install apps and sync data as a new phone. Unfortunately, when I came back home, just 30min after, my iPhone was frozen again though any application or data was not installed and syncronized.

This problem must be not from the compatibility with other applications, but from the operating system 3.1.

I’ll visit Genius Bar again this Sunday.

iBroker you are spot on. Definitely shameful!

The only good I've gotten out of this experience is to come to appreciate consumer activism. The problem itself is annoying, but what has REALLY annoyed me most is Apple's attitude. Big business bullying consumers when they are at fault. Thank God this is merely a phone. If Apple was in the brakes business we'd all be dead.

I love the iPhone (not 3.1), however I want to be able to control the version of the firmwire on my phone and I also want to be able to change my own battery.

Either Apple listens or a competitor listens, smart phones are getting better.

"Wishful thinking. It will be back for you eventually. The problem won't be fixed until it is fixed, so to speak."

wishful thinking or not...all i know is that my phone was bricking bigtime with the 3.1 software for the past 2 weeks. Today, i went to itunes, ran the MMS update, and now i'm a happy camper. no more comas for the past 4 hours, and still almost a full battery.

i'm not a rocket scientist, but maybe...just maybe, the problems related to the 3.1 software was related to MMS, and somehow the update today fixed it? like i said, it won't hurt to try. and at the very best maybe you'll wind up like me, satisfied again with the iphone. OR wait for apple to acknowledge they f'd up on the software release, and release a 3.2 version or something rather. i don't see that happening, they've been mum's the word for the past 2 weeks, shady suckers.
