Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

from brazil: ANOTHER DAY WITHOUT A SOLUTION...WOULD BE COMICAL IF NOT TRAGIC.
I think as MURAHACHIBU..."The problem is 3.1, but you can't "officially" downgrade to 3.01. There are methods posted on the net, but you can't do it in iTunes"...Why apple does not provide, via iTunes, the version that worked before (3.01)? It would be easier for all in the world...Think twice apple !!!

I've been to the genius bar twice because of the phone going dead after 3.1 The first time they swapped out my phone. The second time, they pretty much said there was nothing they could do and actually suggested that I get a second cheap phone from AT&T on the family plan so I didn't miss calls and texts for work. SERIOUSLY? Then, when swapping out the phone again, they tried to load 3.1 on until I had to yell at them. BTW Funny how the drop down menu doens't let you choose OS 3.1

i think 3.1 has just been a big screw up. several have said it many many times. something is wrong with the update. my phone is currently charging again because i talked on it for one hour and now its dead. also, the keyboard clicks are not supposed to be lowered. you wouldn't randomly hear the normal click when your texting really fast and also in the settings you wouldn't hear the normal text click. i hope apple, as does everyone else, is coming out with a fix for this but i know this has made me strongly dislike apple. i know some peoples phones are working just fine but look on here and see how many aren't working "just fine". it is a software problem. it cant be anything else. and im not even going to get started on this whole MMS thing. everyone was excited about that just download 3.1 and have their phones crash nonstop all the time. this is not a reliable phone anymore. period.

Guess I am not alone.. I have noticed some other "side effects" as well. I start up my ipod app and after finishing one song it shuts off. I have shuffle on, and it just jump to the next song, but it doesn't. Several of my apps don't work either, pandora for one. When I tried sync without any apps it still had the involuntary shut down. Is there a way to ditch the update and go back to normalcy?

Yep. I've been having the same issue. Mine started off just as an annoyance but it seems to be getting worse. Yesterday it froze and would not even respond until the battery had died and I was able to re-boot it.

i too have this issue. and the AT&T carrier file update for MMS did nothing to fix this. After i rebooted it and send someone a text it crashed again. My friend i work with who also has a iphone 3G took his to the apple store here in salt lake city. The lady he talked to there then thought it was a hardware issue and he went on to say that it started happening after upgrading to OS 3.1. She then said well since your phone is still under warranty i could upgrade you free of charge if it keeps happening over the next few days. I think he is gonna do that. I wish my phone was still under warranty lol.

I am up to about 6 shutdowns a day. I swapped out my phone a week ago when the guy at the genius bar thought I was just having a hardware update. I reloaded 3.1 on to my phone and its getting worse and worse. I have reset the phone several times and have nearly no apps on my phone. I do not have a land line and travel a lot and need my phone on all the time for my job.

This really *****. How can Apple not even recognize that there is an issue!

    BLAH!

Mine is constantly showing this issue. For the first couple attempts I assumed it was just my battery dead but its definitely a coma state. I can barely make it one whole day with battery now. After installing 3.1 there as been nothing but problems.
This as been the worst update ever. Please fix this issues.

I'll throw in my own unhappiness. This is the only time I've been disappointed in Apple. I've seen the issues with the battery after 3.1 addressed in some media circles - Wired, Engadget, etc. - but nothing about "coma mode."

For the record, if Apple is bothering to follow this now (90 pages and counting) my situation is the same as other reports. My phone works fine and then when it goes asleep, either automatically or by me, I sometimes can't wake it up. This happens 1-5 times per day. On a couple of occasions when I've been busy at work and haven't used my phone, I've let it sit and it woke itself up after 30 minutes in one case, 45 minutes in another. After watching this closely for the past week or so, I can find no discernible pattern. Here's some details:

    • Wi-fi makes no difference, on or off the problem occurs.
    • I have a MobileMe account with syncing turned on (as others have reported the problem without a MobileMe account, I doubt that's the issue)
    • Battery levels make no difference
    • Charging makes no difference
    • Which apps I'm using seems to make no difference
    • Only option is to let the phone sit for a lengthy period and let it wake, or do the hard-reset by holding down wake/home buttons.

I get that not every s/w version is perfect and I'm happy to add my experience. But this is getting silly.

Same thing has happened to me. I have gone the apple store twice and all they can tell me to do is restore the phone. In fact, as I am sitting there talking to the "Genius" guy, a girl comes up with the exact same problem. I hope Apple gets it together and comes out with an update that fixes this problem.

Well since we can not use our cell phone anymore, why don't we use our land line? We can call tech support and chat with them. They have award winning support. It is a good thing, because it is needed. What did you think you paid $600.00 for???

The folks in tech support are very helpful, but I had rather have my money go towards a reliable phone. Even the 3GS folks are having trouble with firmware 3.x.
Imagine buying a phone new like that and having trouble right off the bat. I'm so glad I stayed with my 3G.

Went to the Apple store today prepared to do battle, but I got a Genius who listened to my story, seemed to appreciate that I had already tried restoring the iPhone and 'setting up as new' before going in. He determined I was out of warranty, then told me they'd replace the phone (with a refurb) for me anyway.

As others have reported, this gets you back into a working phone, but you can't restore any back-ups made on 3.1, so you get to start all over.

I really want to put 3.1 on just so I don't have to configure everything all over again for the second time in three days, but it doesn't sound like changing the hardware changes anything.

Oh, and in case Apple's reading, I suffered all the same symptoms. Coma mode. Random complete draining of the battery while in coma mode. And one day, while in coma mode, I picked up the phone and found its back as hot as the bottom of my MacBook Pro.

    Just works. Ha!

(PS: I just noticed that the OS pulldown below the editing box in which I'm currentl typing the post doesn't even list "iPhone OS 3.1" as a choice. Yet another sign this thing was released before it was ready.)

What bothers me more besides the fact that 3.1 is crap is that Apple is putting their headset in the sand and completley ignores the complaint and bug reports from iPhone users. Apple goe public and acknowledge the problem. This is far beyond accaptable.
