Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

In the UK and I think many other countries there is a legal requirement to allow mobile users free and unfettered access the emergency calls. This so-called coma mode potentially puts Apple in contravention of the law or else puts 02 in contravention and they can have recourse against Apple for causing the breach.

Apple, O2, is that comment of any interest?

Let's face it, apple is working on a solution and we won't hear a peep out of them till it's ready.

Secrecy is one of the things we love about apple.

A bit of patience won't make it come any faster, but it will make it feel faster.

This is a freak traffic jam, not a reason to avoid motorways.

Hello, may I ask if all these problems also present on iphone 3GS preloaded with 3.1, not only those preloaded with 3.0.1 then upgraded to 3.1 by users? Or, iphone with 3.1 has not yet come to the market?

To everyone reading this topic because their Iphone 3G keeps on going into a Coma, it probably means you have OS 3.1 installed. Has anyone heard from an Apple Employee about a fix? (I don't mean restore either because we are nailed into using OS 3.1 now thanks to the removal of the digital signatures in the ipsw files; Thanks Apple)

Alot of us count on our phones for keeping in contact with clients and for other important information (or family that may be in hospital needing to contact you) but I cant even receive calls because my phone blackens.

Apple, get you act together and allow us to restore to 3.0.1 AT MINIMUM since you clearly wont address the very fact that the OS 3.1 is flawed.

Steve, I pay 600-800 dollars for a phone and I expect that within a reasonable amount of time that if an issue occurs that it will be resolved. ESPECIALLY when it is an issue with FIRMWARE.

I expect this from other companies but not Apple.

    EXACT same issue here:

iPhone 3G updated to iPhone OS 3.1
phone randomly shuts down to black screen
    non-responsive to wake buttons
only option is to hard reset
    poor battery life
    apps randomly crash

I have noticed one thing... under my mail settings, i have "fetch new data" turned to "Off" but my mail icon will randomly update on it's own that i have new mail available...

Well, I had been hearing about this but never experienced the "coma mode". My wife and I both have original 3g iPhones with firmware 3.1 installed. Last night, my wife was on her way to a friend's house and I got a call from her friend. She said she's been calling my wife but the calls were going straight to voicemail. After my wife arrived at her friend's house, she said the phone would not respond to anything. Her phone was sitting with the Apple logo on the screen last night until the battery died. I was able to recover it by doing a hard reset at least.

My experience with fw 3.1 as been a LOT of dropped calls. Ever since 3.0, the dropped calls had increased but with 3.1, it's gotten ridiculous. Battery life has decreased for the both of us as well.

I work in IT and my iPhone helps me to be more efficient with my job. I get emails via Exchange ActiveSync and am constantly fielding client calls with my phone. It's been embarrassing dropping countless calls (even on EDGE) while I'm having a conversation with a client. I am already on my 2nd iPhone and 2nd SIM card. Even set up the new phone as a new phone in iTunes per some discussion here.

This needs to be fixed ASAP and, to be perfectly blunt, I didn't have any of these problems with I had my old Blackjack II (not that I'm saying that phone was even half of this phone).

murahachibu - which softbank store in tokyo that lets you swap out your problematic iphone. was this referred to you by apple.

much like you i'm sorely disappointed with the customer service of a company that both beats down microsoft and market itself on the slogan 'it just works'. fact is, if you have more than a few apple products and software in your home and minded to follow the forums for each of those products, you ll find apple products arent really that trouble free as they make it out to be. to top that off, the ginza apple store "geniuses" i encounter are anything but, which is quite forgivable if they arent rude (especially one jap guy with permed curls all over). the denials of blatant problems are just overwhelming and borders delusional.

But at least with a traffic jam there is ways to detour so that you dont have to be stuck with the problem!

3.0.1 was our detour and now its GONE!

Just wanted to update. Since restoring back to 3.0.1 I have had ZERO problems, no crashes, and everything just 'works'. I was also able to enable MMS yesterday so my phone is now doing everything I want it to. Yes, I lost some of my contacts during this whole things, and I'm still angry about that, but at least I have a working phone again.

I'm from Madrid, Spain and I have the same problem since the 3.1 update. But I can't restore the OS 3.0 because I don't want to loose my SMS. I'm very disappointed by Apple. This kind of bad update shouldn't have been released.

Now I have the problem with the phone deciding to stop getting phone calls, VM's and TXT messages unless I reset it every few hours.

Is there an app that will do that automatically?

This problem now plagues me multiple times a day but for me the worst thing by far is the complete lack of comment or acknowledgment by Apple.

Apple like to pride themselves on their user experience and sell their products based on this. Well I am a user experience designer and I have to say to you, Apple, that the user experience of a product goes beyond a swishy UI and cute buttons. A good experience is about how you, as a company relate to and look after your customers.

When your customers are having immense amounts of problems like this, don't just hide from it or refuse to comment, that is just plain arrogant. Instead you should be big enough to admit the mistake, help your customers where possible and most of all give them some good and proper feedback about your progress to a solution.

I pay a premium for Apple products, they are in no way cheap; for that I do not expect to be treated like this.

Apple :- Learn how to test your products and learn what about what it means to provide a good user experience.
