Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

"When your customers are having immense amounts of problems like this, don't just hide from it or refuse to comment, "

    Comment to who?

When you personally contacted apple with your problem, what did they say?

I just hung up with Apple iPhone support as I'm sure many of you have done as well.

All they told me to do was a full restore on my iPhone 3G and if that didn't solve the problem, then I should bring it in to my local Apple store to have them check it out.

Guess I'll be making a trip to my local Apple store tomorrow.

BTW, I also have two 3GS iPhones and both of them are working fine with 3.1.

I hope Apple will finally come out and admit there's a problem and get it taken care of.

    Good luck to everyone.

    Joe

    The B*****DS!

Apple won't admit a problem till they have worked out to fix it.
Then they will just fix it.

That's how they work. Love em or leave.

Happened to have the phone go into a coma state when I was near an apple store today, so I took it in to see if they could get any useful info off of it, or had any new suggestions. Talked with a super-sympathetic genius who basically said it was a known issue and definitely software, and suggested that all I could really do at the moment was restore and set up as a new phone, but that I'd still have to update to 3.1, but that it might help somehow-- and if not, to keep calling or bring it back in and get a replacement.

Unfortunately, the suggestions themselves were kind of pointless, since it seems that restoring hasn't generally been a fix from others' experiences, and if the problem is software, then the phone replacement won't help, either. But the take-away message seemed to be that Apple does know about the problem and is working on a fix.

I also learned that if I carry around my trusty Samsung phone with a full charge, I can pop the sim card into that if I arrive somewhere and discover that I'm without a phone because of a crash that drained my battery. (A stupid workaround, but I travel a lot and need something that works...)

Just want to throw my name into the hat.

It was happening to me after my upgrade to 3.1, I have since done a fresh restore and set it up as a new phone, so far I have not witnessed the problem again but I also haven't been using the phone much to test it.

It's been 24 hours since I updated my iPhone 3G to the newest release of 3.1 released yesterday (MMS). I ended up restoring (restored from back up, not as a new phone) the phone after installing yesterday's update. I have no yet had the phone go into coma.

Before restoring yesterday and installing the newest 3.1 update (MMS) my phone was going into coma mode about 4 times a day. It's been about 24 hours and there have been ZERO issues. Keeping my fingers crossed.

You need to do things strictly in the manner intended by Apple, with no deviations whatsoever. If you do, then things just work.

    Perfectly.

But I have seen people do all sorts of silly things with Apple's hardware, only to claim that it is defective like leaving it on their dashboard in the hot sun.

Same here in Canada. iPhone 3G 8gb, now in coma all the time after the 3.1 upgrade. Downgraded to 3.0.1 and problem solved. Went to visit the local Apple store, spoke with the Geniuses. They told me Apple is aware of the problem already, and a few Geniuses are affected too. This is 100% software related and so they can't do anything.

Solution they told me: Wait for 3.1.1 to come out. Just bear with it.

To suggest that 90+ pages of complaints of a single issue iPhones going "comatose" or semi comatose is somehow related to the end user doing something wrong like, "Leaving the phone in the hot sun" is simply ludicrous & actually quite insulting to the consumers intelligence! Even if there is a small percentage of users who did something to the phone like jail break it, drop it or leave it in the hot sun as you suggested that's a very small percentage & I'm sure in the back of their mind they know the consequence for the actions & maybe they're just trying to pawn it off as a software or carrier issue. But the vast majority of us have legit complaints ABSOLUTELY -0- help from tech support.

A fix should not have gone 2 + weeks & counting. This is just poor customer service either on AT&T, Apple or both.

Meguro: Shibuya let me swap out the phone w/o a case number. Try to get it
resolved with a regular genius bar person. If they have to
bring in the manager and his Yakuza sounding right hand man they will deny all problems, lie to you, and tell you to delete all of your apps since the problem is not their responsibility.

My wife's 3G has been having random shutdowns since 3.1 update when it came out, but my 32GB 3GS has been fine, until today. Had my first random shutdown, and also the poor battery lfe. Will report to apple also.

"When you personally contacted apple with your problem, what did they say?"

The phone rep wanted to sell me a new battery for $80. The store rep wanted to sell me a new phone at retail.

The problem with not saying anything is at some point I'll get fed up and buy a new phone per their suggestion. It won't be Apple because they said their phones now last ~13 months at most by not just saying we have a software issue, please hold, we will have a patch out as soon as possible.

"A fix should not have gone 2 + weeks & counting."

Its rather 'insulting to the developers intelligence' to consider that apple is simply ignoring the problem.

Do you honestly think they are sitting round with jobs telling them to take their time - no rush?

"But the vast majority of us have legit complaints ABSOLUTELY -0- help from tech support."

Ok, What should tech support have told you that they didn't?

Seems like people who went to the stores came away with replacement 3.0 phones or were told to 'please be patient while we work out *** has gone wrong'.

And anyone who gets one of these phones and tries to upload 3.1 again deserves everything they get in my opinion - you know it needs a fix, THINK before you act.

This is a nightmare for apple - have faith they are doing what they can.

    And patience.

    Have faith and patience!!!

I would have more faith and patience if someone from Apple announced there was a problem and they were looking in to it.

    "Comment to who?

When you personally contacted apple with your problem, what did they say?"

    Excuse me????

Well let's start with all the people who have contributed to this now 92 page forum topic. Then all the other contributors to the many other forum topics on the problems with 3.1. Although actually a more general public statement about the problems introduced in 3.1 would suffice as not everyone with problems is on the forum.

I have worked in software all my professional career and the companies I have worked for would ALWAYS release a statement to customers if they found a serious problem (let alone a whole raft of them) like this, not that they really did because we did rigorous testing. Personally, I would be deeply ashamed to work for a company that didn't admit when it had done something wrong.

YOU need to figure out that people on this forum are seriously frustrated about this problem, some people are even missing out professionally, and if you just sit there and flame back at everyone who uses this forum to voice their frustrations and concern legitimately then you are going to start upsetting people!
