Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Another day without a solution...Apple, where is the solution to the problem you created? We (all the world) are waiting for more than 2 weeks...Notice that in this period i also stopped shopping at your store...and i´ll better assess future purchases of your brand...absolute disgrace.

    Trash to Treasure

I think the main point the "techy" guys are not understanding here is the "business" aspects. The end users, the Apple customers KNOW there's a problem. What's insulting is NO ONE from Apple has even attempted to address us, the patrons, even on the Apple home page & say, "Yes we understand there's a major problem & we're doing the best we can to fix it". Had this been done I guarantee this post & it's replies would be 1/2 it's size.

THAT'S the problem. It's called customer service. We didn't pay $50.00 bucks for the phone & we're not paying $19.99 a month for service. There's a bit of money being spent & it's not acceptable to have a 1/3 working phone. It's not acceptable to have it roll out with this many end users having problems. But if all this did slip through the cracks then it's just not acceptable to wait for 2 weeks or more. Business is being conducted, families are being affected.

Silence can be deafening & annoying.....wouldn't you agree?? I do guarantee one more thing. I guarantee the next update will probably have 1/2 as many users accepting the update & probably waiting a good 3 weeks before doing so.

well my phone didnt crash any yesterday. it did today like 3 times tho. it would just freeze and i would let it be for about ten minutes then it would work. also its doing this weird everytime i push the lock or home button it decides to take a screen shot. i know you can do it when doing it together. im talking just say your in an app and you want to go home. you push the button and it takes a screen shot. or in messages. and the same thing will happen when i do it with the lock button. this is freaking lame. we need a fix!!!

Updates are supposed to make things better. This 3.1 update decided to go the other way. Ever since the update, the phone does not make/accept calls, send/receive text until I reboot it. I cannot spend my day turning off and turning on the darn thing. I called AT&T because, at first, I thought it was a network problem. They directed me to Apple. Apple's rep proceeded to try to sell me additional service agreements (very lame). Way to take responsibility for your product Apple!

If a user has a problem, then contact the company. It seems odd to take umbridge that they aren't apologising publicly.

And it's a bit naive to assume apple is unaware of the business implications in the £400 smartphone market. In fact, that is probably the very reason they aren't making public apologies.

    It's PR.

" it's just not acceptable to wait for 2 weeks or more. "

it's a pain. But if the fix isn't ready yet, it's fair to assume it's not for the want of trying.

I don't think they are holding it back to wind everyone up for the fun of it.

Add me to the list of 3G users that have experienced random shutdowns. It's happened at least twice a day since 3.1 update.

Come on Trash, stop making excuses for Apple. I could care less about their PR issue. What about the iPhone owner who might miss a job interview in this economy because the stupid thing simply does not work like it used to. I am paying AT&T $100 a month for service and I spent about $260 total to get my phone out of the Apple store. I expect it to just work, update or no update. I work for a major tech company, we don't hide issues when we have them. It should be the same for Apple.

"What about the iPhone owner who might miss a job interview in this economy because the stupid thing simply does not work like it used to."

If I thought for a moment that I would lose a single business deal because of this I would dig out one of my old phones and put the sim in it until this unfortunate issue was fixed.

As it stands though, I assume most people would leave a message.

When i go to the genius bar tomorrow I am asking for my phone to be rolled back to 3.0.
That seems to be the obvious solution.

"I expect it to just work, update or no update."

We all do, that is why we bought apple in the first place - because it usually works a heck of lot better than the alternatives.

The reason i am "making excuses" is fairly obvious.

*They know there's a problem. They know that every day it goes unfixed is a huge embarrasment and damaging to their business.*

I agree, 'I couldn't care less about their PR issue' either. Publicly apologising for a fault they unable to fix yet is not going to make that happen any faster.

"Publicly apologising for a fault they unable to fix yet is not going to make that happen any faster."

But it would make me feel better. I don't want to have to consult an oracle to divine what's in Apple's mind.

If there's an issue with an update that many people are complaining about, then they should acknowledge it.

I guess I haven't been with Apple long enough to just assume they are on it. Why would I if they won't acknowledge that there's an issue in the first place.

Just wanted to add our household's 2 phones (3gs + 3g) to the list. Both fall comatose about once a day since v3.1. Help.

The fact that Apple rather replace the phone (in my case, even used for 10 months with 2 months warranty left) than just roll back the software to 3.0 (and admit the problem), which does not cost a dime to them, is really a mystery to me. A roll back is all I asked for, not a new phone.

    Good job Apple!

It takes a man to admit you made a mistake, not an Apple!

Even if a man does a good Job(s), he does not always make a good Apple!

my 3G is out of warranty, I took it to the so call genius and inquire about this random shut down issue after 3.1 update. He ran some report on my phone and claim that some 3rd party apps may be casuing issue and adviced me try not to use ANY so 3rd party apps (he mean any apps in app-store not released by Apple, ***)and he is trying to open up my phone and see if anything was loose inside (no way i let him do that cause there is nothing loose) and he is trying to charge me 199 for a replacement. When i mention a lot of us having the same issue in the apple support fourm and he just pretended he did not hear me.
That is actually my wife's phone and i am gald i never get one and will never get one. i will keep my Nokia 5800 which can do everything an iphone can do.

Yeah, It happens to me too. The thing is, my iPhone doesn't shut down, the screen just doesn't come on. I have to wait like 10 minuets and then the screen will come on when I hit the home button. I don't get it.
