Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Same here. I feel so embarrassed to find the phone off when I'm supposed to make an urgent call. And its been long since the last OS update, from now onwards I'd think twice before making a decision on buying Apple product.

I think we will all wait a week or so before updating in future!

Wierd thing, o2 have just txtd me to say picture messaging is now available!
Like they did on august 4 when they enabled it and sep 10 when I enabled 3.1

curious to see what the genius says today.
My warranty ran out last week but the crash log shows it started going wrong the week before....

"If I thought for a moment that I would lose a single business deal because of this I would dig out one of my old phones and put the sim in it until this unfortunate issue was fixed.

As it stands though, I assume most people would leave a message."

I have the 3.1 problems as well, and I wouldn't count on people calling you back or leaving a message. Yesterday my phone appeared to be dead/off, and I was just about to reset it, when I tried calling it from another phone. Everything seemed fine on the other end! It appeared to be ringing. However, the iPhone didn't make a sound. It woke up by it self a few minutes later, and guess what - no missing call registered. Someone could be calling you, thinking you don't want to talk to them, and you'll never know. Not that great.

Did the call go through to voicemail, or did it keep ringing an abnormally long time?

Having the freeze problem, also getting the phone going to blank screen and not responding to any action, this is with 6 iPhones and no response from apple.

Has anyone else had the problem of the mute button falling off, we've had it on three iPhones so far, all 3G models.

By coincidence, the phone locked up just after i posted.
I called the 3g (which remained unresponsive) and it went to voicemail as usual.

Yep, happens to me - random shut down and no passcode/pin-lock needed on reboot. Shocked at how many replies this thread has, with no positive action from Apple...

Same problem here, several crashes per day after the 3.1 update.

However, after resetting all settings on friday morning, the phone hasn't crashed once (knock on wood). So at least for me that seems to have helped, though who knows for how long. Worth a try though: Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

I did reinstall the OS few days before, but that didn't fix the problem.

Interesting to see if this could help other folks here with this same problem...

I did the full reset on Friday but didn't put back all my media.
    Worked fine.

Sat lunchtime, put back my music and video and it has crashed twice.

    Apple store here i come!

I posted about a week ago here. did a restore to new process and did not load any apps....only synch with exchange. day one no crashes.....day two and beyond daily crashes...lock ups whatever.

i called support...they finally told me to hang tight as patches were coming....they mentioned sept 25th. I have no clue if they are released yet? Im traveling and only able to post this using my verizon winmob 6800 via pdanet and a dell mini.
None of which I ever carried just after my iphone purchase but now the iphone is more like an ilocked.

might try grabbing itunes to see if there is an update published.

    this is nuts!!!!

My wife and myself updated our 3G phones the day the update came out. She hasn't had one problem with hers but I have had the same shutdown problems addressed by everyone else here. I found that turning off the 3G seems to have eliminated the shutdown problem for me. Yesterday I turned 3G back on and immediately started having problems. As soon as I was able to get the phone going I turned off the 3G and haven't had any more problems. I hope it stays this way until Apple fixes their error.
