Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

FWIW, I seem to be having good luck with the suggestion of turning 3G off. No freezes or missed calls in about 8 hours.

Inability to access 3G makes iPhone pretty useless for many of my apps, but praying this atleast make phone calls more reliable.

Sure hope Apple supplies a fix this week.

Just got back from apple store meadowhell.

3 days out of warranty, polite and friendly genius swapped 3g for a replacement 3.0.1 no problem.

    That is good customer service.

Won't be upgrading any time soon!

It helped that I had printed a baseband crash log that showed the crashes began after sep 9.

'If you want precise dates and times of all of your crashes, then do this:
    Open Terminal.app
Enter the following: grep crash ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice//Baseband/ | grep Resetting

I agree with your comment. I was told to reset the iphone to factory setting and sync the data, not re-install the backup as it may contain some issue that was causing the phone to black out and get stuck. Since Thursday when I followed the instructions from the Genius Bar in Austin, it has only done it once that day but none so far as of Sunday. I was told if this happens more than 2 or 3 times in a week, they would replace the iPhone. I am weary of that idea as I was told that the next iPhone is really a refurbished phone, not a NEW one.

The day after the 3.1 update my iphone 3G started freezing.
It's been freezing at least 3-5 times a day.
Usually when its frozen, its completely non-responsive. And for some reasons it downloads new email (even though I push my email manually)

So I took it to the apple store. They did a behavior check, and basically told me I shouldn't be restarting my iphone so much. But when you have important calls to receive or make your not left with much of a choice. They also told me I should restore it. So I did using my backup content, and of course it's still freezing.

I called apple this morning and they told me I should Restore it again as a new phone. The guy acknowledged that I needed the new software. But I thought that was the problem

    Any help?

    My friend, no help...

Apple does not care for their customers. As i said before...i will think twice before buying a new product from apple again. Apple we´re your customers, you should treat us with more respect...your indifference will never be forgotten, you can believe.

I had the same problem as everyone else here. I upgraded the MMS service over 24 hrs ago and have not had a system lockup in 30 hours.

Took the phone to the Genius and he reloaded. Still crashed!

Today updated with the MMS software and it was good for a while ... now it has crashed! Argh!

iPhone is out of warranty because it has a scratch on the corner.

I have been telling apple support that the 3G phone has not properly operated while set to 3G network SINCE 3.0 was released. I was hoping that 3.1 was going to fix things but instead everything got worse.

Apple is entering a period of crap support and software IMO.

Simple solution - downgrade to 3.0

Genius did it for me today replacing a 3g 3 days out of warranty.
if you bought one of the first 3 month customers, then you can find a way on youtube.
