Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I disabled wifi on my iPhone and I haven't seen any coma symptoms in a couple of days. YMMV, but this workaround will work for me until Apple gets the problem fixed.

My issue is not so much a "shut down" than it acting like it has shut down. This is the fourth time today that it has randoming blacked out on me. The phone won't respond to the buttons at all and won't restart. Suddenly it will just come back like normal to my locked screen. The blackouts are getting longer as they happen. This time, as soon as it came back on, I unlocked it and it went to the "recent calls" page I was on last. There it froze. Any time I would hit either of the buttons, it would make the camera noise and the screen would flash at me. This went on for several minutes. When it suddenlly started working like normal, I had a bunch of pics of my recent calls page in my photos. Help! I'm on call at the hospital tonight and need it to work!!!

That's how it's been for me, where the phone would freeze. Actually what you are doing is somehow pressing the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time to take a screenshot. It's normal behavior.

However, I have some news. I have found a way to use some third-party terminal software to be able to downgrade your iPhone 3G to 3.0.1 whilst ignoring the 1015 error.

You will have to find the 3.0.1 package (I won't provide a source), click Check For Update while holding Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows), navigate to the downloaded file, and "upgrade" your iPhone. You will then get error 1015 and have to go through a Terminal process. It is described right here: http://www.xsellize.com/showpost.php?p=256234&postcount=4

    This is what it says:

    Linked forum post:
Grab this copy of iRecovery with the missing dylib file: >http://thebigboss.org/blog_downloads/irecovery.zip

Extract it to desktop, then go to Terminal.

    Type the following:
    cd /usr

    sudo mkdir local

    cd /usr/local

    sudo mkdir lib

    cd /usr/local/lib

    sudo cp /users/<shortusernamehere>/desktop/libusb-0.1.4.dylib .

    sudo chmod 755 libusb-0.1.4.dylib

    cd /users/YOURNAME/desktop

    ./iRecovery -s

    fsboot

I may whip up an AppleScript just so it can do this all for you. In fact, I'll do that right now.

Yeah, this little blunder seems to be making a lot of people lose respect for Apple - me included.

Software mistakes happen. Going over 2 weeks without admitting the problem and releasing a fix (or at least an official way to downgrade) is unacceptable on Apple's part.

Thanks so much for your help. I'll have to try this. I've never really been stressed out by Apple before. It's rather traumatizing.

I guess I'm one of the many. Started having the random shut-downs on my 3G a couple weeks ago, but only 2-3 per week. Genius couldn't find anything wrong, suggested a complete restore without using the backup as it may have faulty data in it. Just finished that, and now it shut down on me 6 times in the last 45 minutes. I can tell when it's not going to wake up when I pick it up and it's really warm. I've been an Apple fan for many years now, but the problems I'm having with the iPhone and issues with Snow Leopard are starting to make me lose some faith. Still better than PC's though!

I've experienced the infamous "blackout" or "coma-mode" once on 3.1. Since I don't really need 3.1, I've downgraded to 2.2.1 until Apple can release an update that runs as well as 2.2.1 does. I really do not have any problems with 2.2.1.

Thanks Apple. You're the best!… not.

Well i didnt know what was happening untill you said something about this issue. My phone since 3.1 has been shutting down to black about 3 to 8 times a day. Sometimes i will just hard reset it but ive noticed if I just let it sit for about 5 mins it will work again. I thought it just was my phone but NO my wifes phone does the same thing too. I cant belive they havent fixed this bug yet its very very annoying to be working on the phone then suddenly be waiting for it to reset. I do love the new updates They work great for my needs but it really needs to be fixed ASAP!!!

i had the same problem, i took it to apple on the weekend, before i saw this thread, and they replaced my phone, and now it is doing it again! clearly apple haven't advised their staff about this issue! hoping they fix it soon and i'm sure a lot of people are missing calls etc when they don't realise their phone is taking a nap!

Three full days with no crashes! Before resetting, the phone crashed several times a day.

Easy enough fix: on your iPhone go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

"I think Apple has some responsibility in getting this fixed"

    "fixing it"?

I wonder if they have considered that?

"EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems."

    So what made you update?

    =========

genius that swapped my phone seemed to think 1 in 10 was a fair guess at failure rate.

Downgrade to 3.0 until 3.2 comes out - then give it a month.
    Check these boards too!
