Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Same issues as everyone else, missing lots of calls\txt's. This is getting a little annoying Apple, this would be unacceptable on any other phone (why do we put up with is on the iPhone?). At this point I wish I had old phone I could put my SIM into until a fix is released.

I"m not sure whether this has anything to do with the problem, but when i disabled push notifications for my contacts and calendars I haven't had any shut downs at all. The last time I had a problem was Friday when I douldn't dial out until I shut down the phone.

Fingers crossed it carries on that way!!

CRASH. My iPhone (which I love dearly and love to whip-out and show-off) keeps crashing. Only a two-button reboot brings it back to life - By the time it restarts most folks have lost interest and confidence in the Apple I love. Please help. This is bad news. Phone. Internet. Ipod. Come back to me soon....

I had this problem, and it now has been solved. It is not a 3.1 problem. There must have been some bad installs. Here's a description of what happened with my phone:

I had been experiencing the lock-ups (comas) that were forcing me to perform a reset once or twice a day (some days more, but on average 1-2 times). My battery life was also terrible, and my phone seemed to be very sluggish at performing any tasks. I decided to make an appointment at the genius bar. When I got there, I explained my problem and they decided to run a diagnostic on the software. During the process, their computer came up with an error and couldn't continue the process. They determined at that point it was not going to be able to be restored, so they gave me a replacement with 3.0.1 software. I went home and reluctantly upgraded to 3.1 so I could restore from my backup. Upgraded, restored from backup and it is working great. I haven't had any lock-ups in four days, the phone is more responsive, and the battery life is much improved. This is with 3.1 installed.
The only conclusion I can draw from this is that either there is a bad hardware/software combination in some of the phones, or some of us just had bad installations with the upgrade. One thing I did do before upgrading the replacement phone was delete the old 3.1 file from my computer and forced iTunes to download a new version of the update. That may have helped as well. Good luck to all those who haven't solved this issue, but I must say that I'm sure Apple is scrambling trying to figure out why some phones are working perfectly and others are having massive problems with the same software.

"But I couldn't believe the phone tech when he said that the number of complaints or complications for 3.1 are minimal or almost non existent. "

The secret is to follow Apple's procedures exactly, without any "variations" or "creativity" or "innovations".

If you do that, you will find that your iPhone just works.

Same problem. Even did a DFU restore and set up as a new phone and it didn't help. Still getting these annoying "coma" modes. Have to hard reset every time.

I suggest everyone send Apple feedback at www.apple.com/feedback.

This obviously isn't a hardware issue either because a software update broke the phone...

I went into the settings > general > Auto-Lock, then i set it to Never.
No more random shut downs after that, the only problem now is I have to remember to hit the lock button on the top when i'm done using the phone. (iPhone 3G version 3.1)

    So....

We are nearing 100th page. Is this something to celebrate?

Am really irritated. I thought that all my freezing went off after I turned the 'Fraud Warning' off in Safari. But, no.

After a couple of days, it started again and now am facing 4-5 freezes per day. Well..... fingers crossed.

OK, here is a weird thing. I am adding also a long story here so just bear with me for a second. Last week I got tired of the random shutdown, especially since even though the phone will come out of the coma state by itself, I would know exactly when it happened since it always vibrates before that (not sure if is due to receiving a message, email, call, etc.) so it was annoying to see that happening at least three or four times a day. Anyhow, I checked here and found this thread, which I posted to about 10 or 12 pages ago. I also called Apple and got an appointment at my lonely local Apple store with a Genius. I got the appointment 3-4 days in advance and right after I posted here and got the appointment my iPhone stopped experiencing the coma/shutdowns. Saturday came, and while driving to the store (located in downtown) I got stuck in traffic in the only highway that crosses the city. Long story short, I got at 1:05 PM at the store. My appointment was at 1:00 PM. Waited in line for 5 minutes (it was busy) until finally the person who helped my said that I have to register with somebody else. By the time he check the system he said "You are 15 minutes late, you lost your appointment". I was not happy with that since it was 1:12 PM and I have spent the last 7 minutes trying to get to that point. Anyway, the manager came to me and said: "I am sorry but you are late, this appointments are only 15 minutes and we are full, so please re-schedule". I know this has nothing to do with the shutdowns problem but I just wanted to let this out since it was my first experience with the Genius Bar and it was not a good one, actually I did not even talked to the Genius and I found funny that the person who tried to help me before the manager said: "You are late and I think that the Genius cannot see you now because they have other customers. I know you were only 5 minutes late but if I talk to him now to ask if he can help you, he will probably get really mad at me for disturbing him". It was weird because there was fear in her voice, seriously, she was debating about talking to the Genius or not. Needless to say, I lost all respect for this so-called 'Geniuses' who think they really are, just because Apple decided to call them that.

Back to the shutdowns, the thing now is that, as mentioned before, my iPhone has not experienced a single coma/shutdown/lock, etc. since last week on Tuesday or Wednesday, so I am not sure if I should bother trying to get an appointment again, specially since I know there is no cure yet (no patch for 3.1 has been released yet) and the problem seem to be random, so what would be the point? .

I posted earlier that, after turning off the "fraud warning", my iphone apparently went back to normal, but it lasted only one day. It got into coma mode today already.
This is serious, o phone is something that should be reliable, I use it to receive professional calls that I can't miss.
I was such a defender of apple's robustness...

    Has Apple abandoned us all??????

This is not the Apple I remember..it seems they do not care about their customers any more.

People, the only way they will get the message is if we stop supporting their products!

Same issues for me. I thought that I would thow my name in, just Apple is keeping track. I find it disturbing that Apple cannot just admit that there is an issue. I took my phone to a Genius (ROFL), and he looked a little annoyed when I told him that I was experiencing the same "Coma Mode" that so many others were. I asked him how many people a day were coming in with this problem. He pretty much just ignored the question, and asked if I used the Facebook App, and that that was known to cause a problem. I told him that I was not buying that because I was running the same apps before 3.1, and the problems did not start until 3.1. At that point, he said that I could wait until Facebook updates their code in a couple weeks, or he could replace the phone with a refurb with 3.01. I took the replacement, but his offer told me two things. They are fully aware of the problem, but will not admit it, and that they are shifting the blame.
    Shame on Apple.

My phone has been coma-ing upwards of 8 times a day! this is crazy!

now i am on the phone with the apple "geniuses". they are telling me that i can ship the phone off to them for 2 weeks and have them repair it (with no phone in the mean time). Or PAY 30 dollars for an upgraded repair where they mail me a new phone. THIS IS INSANE!

    I am still in warranty!

I did a swap out at the genius bar 2 weeks ago before I knew it was an issue with 3.1. The guy at the apple store told me to set up the phone as a new phone and install 3.1. Thus re-creating my original problem.

THIS IS MAKING ME ABSOLUTELY INSANE!
