Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Just adding my name to the list in hope that Apple will respond. I've experienced 2 shut downs usually with strange battery behavior - e.g. sudden drain while showing full on the icon. Restore has been successful both times, but it leaves you with an uneasy feeling.

125,000+ views it does make you think this is affecting a few thosand people not a few hundred.

Have just rolled back to a default iPhone, no numbers, no contacts, no mail and no apps. Will live with it for a day or two and see if it still happens.

I have also experienced the random shut downs, but my wifes phone has not, we have different applications on both phones. I believe that it is an APP that is causing the random shut downs, it would be interesting to post the various apps people have and then compare which app we all have in common, this would defitnetly show which app is the culprit. I did a full restore two days ago and left all the apps out. let's see what happens no random shut downs yet.

    Please people,
    fill out a feedback form.
    Call apple tech support.
They do not pay attention to the user forum. If you don't call support, they don't 'officially' know about it.

My wife and I each have iPhone 3G phones, both purchased new at the same time from AT&T. Both were completely happy running 3.0.1, and never crashed. Both upgraded from 3.0.1 to 3.1 on the same Mac on the same day running the most current version of iTunes. The first one upgraded to 3.1 without a hitch, and hasn't given me any problems since. Works great. The other phone, my wife's, started having coma mode problems immediately after installing 3.1. Random lockups and, several times a day disconnects from AT&T's network despite indications that it is still connected with 5 bars. The only way to get it to make/receive calls again is a two-button reboot.

I think something might have gone wrong during the firmware upgrade with the second phone. No errors or anything like that, but after all was said and done with the upgrade on her phone it immediately locked up and required a hard reboot. This wasn't the case with my phone. I don't know how much verification (if any) iTunes does to ensure the new firmware installs correctly, so that might be something Apple could look at. The easiest temporary fix for Apple would be to quickly push out a new version of iTunes that lets us downgrade to 3.0.1 until Apple can ascertain and fix the real problem.

it happens for me too...Twice after upgrading to 3.1. Once it happened when i switched to next track using the ear phone remote and the other time no idea it was totally gone. Advised my friends not to upgrade the software and it is working perfectly for one who still has 3.0

Coma-Problen: Seems like Apple knows about it but don't talk:

I had a 50 minutes support phone-call with Apple on saturday. To make it short: "We know the problem. We are working on it worldwide with the most effort. Please Mr. XXX send us your Crash-log, you'll find it there: ...; We do not know yet what causes the problem. No we can't do anything, e.g. if we send you a refurbished phone it might happen again with 3.1.; We are awfully sorry. We do not now when the new Firmware will be ready ..."

At the end of the call they agreed to change my iPhone via UPS for free (I am out of warranty for some days but did the upgrade on 3.1 in guarantee time).

Let's see if I am a lucky winner with 3.0 / 3.1 without coma or an unhappy loser ...

    Bye

I'm not convinced the phone has "shutdown". My phone's screen wouldn't turn on, but it vibrated upon receiving a pushed email once. Next time this happens to someone, try plugging your headphones in and pushing the play button on the headphones to see if the iPod plays.

Hello all- here was my experience.

I upgraded to 3.1 a couple weeks ago, and last week began to have problems with applications crashing and needing to do frequent hard-resets. Then one day I picked it up and it was extremely warm, screen was off, and unresponsive to any button presses. After a day with the phone like this, it finally "woke up" by pressing the power button for about 30 seconds. It seemed to be working OK after that, but the battery would drain quickly and the phone was quite warm.

I took it to the Genius Bar, explained the situation, and the guy gave me a new phone with OS 3.0.1 installed. I was still under warranty. He seemed to be well aware of this problem, and suggested that I might hold off on installing 3.1 for now, as he himself was doing.

Everything seems to be doing OK with 3.0.1 and the new phone right now. I'm going to continue to wait to install 3.1 for quite a while, even though MMS would be pretty nice to have.
