Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I just wanted to post an update to my last post. After I did a restore to 3.1, then tried to restore to 3.0.1 and failed, I did one more restore to 3.1, this time without syncing any apps. I then installed only the apps I needed after the restore and so far my phone has been much more stable. I used it all day yesterday and tried to get it to lock up yet it stayed turned on the whole time. So maybe it is app related somehow, I have no clue. All I know is that it seems to be working better after the two restores that I performed. I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope it doesn't lock up again but I REALLY HOPE Apple releases an update to fix it for good.

I can tell you all this , I hace 2 iphone 3g , updated them both the same way, 1 workes fine the other randomly crashes while locked. wifi has no change on this and neither do the apps. I called apple tech support today and they said they have not had any other complaints about the update ( which is certaintly ********) . They told me to bring it to the apple store for a replacement. seems they arent even looking for a solution, but it is what it is and i will go there and get my new phone.

    Update
after upgrading to 3.1 on thursday i had numerous lockups on my 3g. On friday afternoon, after failing to roll back to 3.0.1 the phone went into recovery mode (no applications no nothing,it was razed clean) i did a restore, updated to 3.1 again, syncd back all my apps, music, everything. It's been going without another lockup for more than 24 hours now.
None of my applications are 3.1 compatible but they work. I never had notifications on or mobile me, not when it locked up, not now.

Exactly the same problem here. The reason I looked for the forum was to see if anyone else has had this problem since the 3.1 update. I've just this minute had it happen for a third time.
The phone was completely frozen off. I'd just been using it and put it down for a second and it was dead. The only thing that brought it back to life was the hard boot.

It's happened 3 times to me now in just a couple of days. There is a definite problem here with the 3.1 update.

Same problems here. Since 3.1 several shutdowns. And as mentioned: You don't realize until you use your phone. A huge problem for me using it as a business phone...

It shuts down because it shows the battery as drained. Same goes for mine and most other users who upgraded. I have to wonder if it's a battery calibration problem ... but my iPhone 3G is running much hotter than usual.

wow... I was just sharing with a friend the 3.1 black out experience. I mentioned jokingly that it must have something to do with 10 o'clock.

I applied the upgrade at around midnight Thursday, Sep 10.

I got my first blank screen at around 10am EST yesterday at work, then at around 10pm EST last night. This morning, at around 10am EST it happened again.

This last time, it could not find a cell signal where I know there is plenty. I shut down gracefully and brought back up and things are fine... Looking forward to 10pm.

A hard reset is when you push and hold the home and sleep/ on/ off buttons simultaneously for about 10 second and the phone restarts

Im ****** now. After more than a day without any problems i just had a lockup. Just when i thought i was out of the woods. Didnt do a hard reset, waited about 5 minutes and it works again. How is it any different from a miserable winmobile now?

SInce 3.1, a lot of this agoing much smoother on my 3g. Address Book is finally up to peed for 4000+ databases and lookahead typing for sms TO no longer stalls the system.

Less crashes and battery drain is finally normal again. I can now even think of leaving on notifications and location services without being scared that it would reduce the battery to 3 or 4 hours again.

SO I am very happy but here we go again :

Just had my second random shutdown. Would appreciate any fix.
