Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I've got the iPhone replaced two times. It's not a hardware issue, unfortunately...

Nothing has fixed the 3.1 issue for my iPhone 3G other than downgrading to 3.0.1, I can't have my phone going into a comma randomly throughout the day.

Replacing the phone, or, more accurately, replacing 3.1 with 3.0, is the only solution that seems to work. Apple seems very willing to swap phones; just in the couple of hours I spent at the Genius bar, five phones were exchanged, two for the same 3.1 issue I was having. But be sure to get a 3.0 phone, or the same problem will arise. Alternatively, a firmware downgrade is possible using the well-described method easily found on the web. However, be aware that iRecovery may produce a bus error and refuse to run with the newest version of iTunes in the Mac OS X 10.4 environment (as happened to me), so if you have access to a PC, would suggest doing the downgrade using that platform.

You can our three 3G iPhones to the list. Since 3.1 the update all 3 phones seemingly shut down at random times throughout the day. It started almost immediately following the 3.1 update. For a couple days I was soft reseting the phone (holding both buttons - apple logo) to revive it. Now it is clear that the phones are not off, but rather not waking up. Now just waiting is the solution. Unfortunately sometimes as ling as 5 minutes.

I did make a trip to the Genius Bar, they plugged all 3 iPhones in and ran diagnostics, found no issues. The Genius said "it's not a harware problem." he suggested I restore them all. Argh.

Reverting to 3.0 is the ONLY way out of this, it seems, at least for the time being. However, you can still easily get MMS with 3.0; see here: http://www.benm.at/att/

Additionally, you can also easily get internet tethering without jailbreaking, which is not yet available for 3.1; see here *on your iPhone*: http://help.benm.at/help.php

I installed both of these features in under 3 minutes, without a glitch.

So, the only convenience of 3.1 that can't be had with 3.0 is the nice app sorting feature in iTunes, but given all the problems 3.1 has caused, that's a feature I'm glad to live without.

Same issue here but this time I think I got what is happening. I believe the reason for this to happen is due to lost of network connection. One thing I noticed is that the shut down happens after either checking emails, internet browsing or most tasks that require connectivity. This is how I found that out:
When you don't have internet connection and open Safari, it will try to load the page and will place a gray background saying "loading", "connecting" or something like that until a working connection (3G, WIFI, etc) is found. Well, one of the many times that my phone fell into this "coma", I tried hitting the home button and for a small fraction of a second I saw that message and then it turned black. If you actually try calling your number when the phone doesn't responds it will ring as normal, meaning that the phone is not off, is just not responding because is hanging trying to connect. As a matter of fact some times I tried to connect to WIFI and I can't get it to work until I reboot; that happened also with MobileMe telling me that it couldn't connect because the password was wrong same as the WIFI.

I hope this issue gets resolved and that what I experienced gives some clue to the Apple developers so that they can do their work right... (ohhh yes, I can say that because I'm a developer too and I do care about my work!)

Adding my name to the list.

There comes a point in time, when after 8 months of having my phone, and being graced with nothing but problems with it, you get to a point where you have had enough. I'll never again recommend the Iphone to anyone, and what is more annoying, is the fact that apple doesn't even have the decency to make an announcement that their OWN UPDATE has F*** thousands of peoples phones... phones which we rely on for work... work which pays the bills for the "premium" products we purchase from apple, that apparently "just work".

Add me to the list too...

Mine is going comatose roughly once every 2-3 days which I can live with, but it's not an ideal situation I must admit.

I am joining the list of unsatisfied users of the latest (3.1) Iphone 3G firmware.
Please point your developer attention to a fix/update .

My frequency of crashes is about once every 2/3 days.

I bit the bullet and downgraded to 3.0. There was no other way around it. It had gotten to the stage where my iPhone was going in to a coma up to 15 times a day, people were rining me and could not get through. Why is Apple not making a statement on this???

Don't even bother contacting o2 regarding this problem, they don't want to know! Just keep paying your £45 a month and take your phone to an Apple store where they might be able to fix your "hardware" problem at a cost. Granted, I have had my phone for 13 months (around the same length of time I have waited to speak to someone at Apple phone Support) but Mick at o2 tells me that he will have nothing to do with it. The problem is to do with software upgrade 3.0.1 and all that I can suggest is to restore your phone to factory settings and don't accept any O.S updates until problems are confirmed to be ok. You will still be able to get your apps back (you know, the ones we have paid for with our hard earned cash). The Iphone is exclusive to o2 but only when it suits either party.
Next number I will dial if I can get it to work will be the office of fair trading.

Totally agree about O2, once they get your signature on the contract and the initial 28 days period is over then they are not interested. I cannot believe this major issue is still open along with total silence from apple. I have tried all the usual hacks/tweaks listed here but as with many other people still experience the problem (2 coma modes yesterday after a couple of days of none), its a firmware bug and the only thing that will fix is either apple release 3.1.1 or users downgrade to 3.0.x. The hardware thing is only an excuse until apple release a fix.

You mentioned O2 and their exclusive deal in the UK, this is ending soon with both Orange (pre xmas) and Vodafone (early 2010) getting the iphone. So more consumer choice means you are not forced onto one network.
