Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

"The hardware thing is only an excuse until apple release a fix."

This problem only seems to affect 1 in 10 phones - so replacing the hardware should have a 90% success rate even if everyone upgraded to 3.1.

    But i won't be.

I got a replacement phone from the genius and will skip the update thank you very much.

Must be a heck of a problem if i fix is taking so long to put right.

The guy responsible must be running out of fingernails! What he hasn't chewed off in frustration will be pulled off by a man in a black turtleneck with a set of designer titanium pliers!

My analysis mirrors yours. I have also found that the iPhone continues to look for e-mail after the screen goes off whilst I was consulting mail. I would expect this from MobileMe with push notification. In this instance however, it is pop accounts so it is wierd to get notification of new e-mails when the screen is black.

I have also noticed that the iPhone has difficulty finding my Time Capsule. It will pick up a host of other networks but I have to wait around 5 seconds before the Time Capsule shows on the list.

Right: 105 pages and counting. If Apple does not fix this within 24 hours nor comes up with an explanation and an anticipated date for a fix I will NEVER buy an iPhone again. Than I will switch to an other brand as soon as my contract expires which is june 2010.

I am getting VERY angry now! My iPhone is completely useless as it passes out after 30 seconds into deep coma. I can not be reached, I cant call etc.

The deep removal of iTunes/reinstall iTunes strategy does not work. Like an idiot, I tried it on my downgraded 3G, and I've had several comas in less than 12 hours. When I get home tonight, I'll be re-downgrading. I'd tell you how, but now Apple is not only refusing to admit there is a problem, refusing to give any guidance on when (or indeed if) there will be a fix, and refusing to allow you to downgrade to a version of the OS that doesn't suck, but they're removing posts that explain how to downgrade. Apparently, they'd rather we suffer in silence.

It is utterly ridiculous Apple did not come with (anticipated) resolutions as yet. I am spending lots of valuable time and energy on getting communicable but nothing works. I also refuse te enter into "Microsoft resolutions" that require complete system overhauls. I am VERY angry!

Same problem. I'm still using iTunes 8. Nearly 10 crashes/day now.

    @mickb71

Setting push notification to manual seemed to work for me as well. I also have reset my network settings and really haven't had a crash in about 10 days.

I am also getting the random freezes and shutdowns since upgrading to 3.1, given the number of posts on this issue why hasn't apple responded? Does anyone know an easy way to rollback?

I suggested to help here is the US a class action law suite because warranty or not they can not recommend software that renders our phones useless then have nothing to do with it. Apple promptly removed the post as they will this one but a few of you will see it and if we all post is a few minutes at a time maybe they will understand we are serious. You can't leave people with a broken phone especially while they are still paying for the service by a contract you can't get out of. They did not think my recommendation was helpful. I think it is!!

I really expect that if Apple does not issue a fix for these problems in a timely mannor (which has long since passed) there will be a class action. And I think that it is warrented with the way Apple has handled this situation.

Guys, there is no use complaining about this. I just gave up and went back to 3.01; everything is good now. I learned an important lesson never to update my iphone software until I see feedback from others.

Yup - anyone but the first 3 months of 3g sales is still in warranty.

Get the genius bar to downgrade or replace.

The idea of legal action is just dumb - it won't make the solution come any faster and the lawyers would be the only winners. You might as well suggest invading them to force a regime change.

I've had the random crashes too. I sent it to Apple, got a new one (refurbished), updated it to 3.1 and restored it completely (with data from my old iPhone) and it works without any crashes for one week now. So it has to be some kind of hardware issue!
