Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Add me to the list as well Both my wife's 3G and my 3GS is having the problem. My wife's is locking up 3-4 times a day. Additionally my wife noticed that here Itunes on her phone was blank! Yet when I sync the phone it thinks that music and movies are sync'd. I did a restore. I'm hoping this fixes the problem.

Unfortunately in this world, it's lawyers that make companies stand up and take notice. I think that not one word about lawyers would have been mentioned had Apple stood up and said "OOOOPPPSSS!!!", but no, they decided to hide under a rock. It makes them seem like they are hiding something. Almost all of us could have lived with them saying we made a mistake and are working on it. None of us, well, there are one or two, will live with the, under the rock, attitude.

Microsoft sends out updates all the time. Even then I've never had this kind of problem with Vista. Nothing I've ever had with a Windows update has caused a PC or SmartPhone to crash. This is truly a first.

Ditto - same problems as others after update. My wife did not upgrade her phone yet and she has no problems. Come on Apple!

It's a really weird intermittent behavior--one that can make you think you've "solved" it when a few good days happen.

I did yet-another-restore-from-backup (and every time, one or two apps lose your data which is scary). It had been freezing many times a day making me virtually unreachable by my only home AND business phone number. After the restore it was fine for a day, had one freeze, and then was fine for about a week! I thought I was safe. Now it happens constantly again. I've started just never turning the screen off. Imagine what THAT does to battery life! I also avoid using the music player since it often freezes when you sleep the screen after finishing with music. Unfortunately, the same happens when finishing a call, which I cannot avoid.

The most fun is that I was in a car accident and my phone didn't work. Nobody was in a life-threatening situation, but it's scary to imagine if we had been! Meanwhile insurance companies need to be able to call me... and they can't, and I don't even know it.

Meanwhile my phone still has times when it gets no signal or else simply won't initiate or take a call even WITH a signal. This started at the same time as the freezes (3.1) but is rarer. It could be related to AT&T's MMS troubles, but rebooting helped with the latter (won't initiate or take calls). That's almost worse than the freezing, but because you can use apps and THINK your phone is fine, when in fact calls can't come in. You don't know it until you try to make an outgoing call and the phone sits there forever without the ring starting. Reboot and calling returns.

My iPhone is beyond great when it works, but I've been burned so badly by various recent issues (loss of WiFi, loss of GPS, loss of app data, loss of phone reception, and now this) that it will take several months of flawless behavior before I'd think of recommending it again.

My phone will blackout and not respond for twenty minutes at a time. Then, all of a sudden it will come right back to life. After a not so quick reboot I'm good to go for a few hours (minutes sometimes).

Other times my phone's data connection will just crap out and not respond... I cannot receive or make calls but my missed calls list does show that people TRIED to call me. I get the Red Exclamation Point next to my attempted SMS messages. Reboot fixes this but its ridiculous we have to do this every hour or two.

I'm very upset about this, Apple. Fix this nonsense.

Yea it pretty clear that the radio FW is crashing. Sometimes it brings down the entire phone other times just the radio.

Its been 3 weeks since 3.1 was released. I think Apple owes us 3.1.1 any day now.

Just wanted to add another name, I'm having the same bricking issues. As another person said "I wouldn't be so ****** off if Apple would just comment about the situation"

Where is Bill when you need him?

All, just want to reiterate my prior posts, and save everyone a lot of wasted time -- DO NOT TRY TO "FIX" 3.1!!! IT WON'T WORK, at least until Apple troubleshoots, and releases an update. I talked with one of the product specialists, who says they're puzzled by the issue, as this was supposed to have been a "technically very simple change." So may be a while until Apple sorts it out.

In the mean time, get back to 3.01, install MMS & tethering if you like, and be happy

This has happened to me three times now. Hard reboot seems to work but I'd like a real fix for this... especially since this is my only phone, no land line. I also plug in and resync each time... going to try restoring to previous backup this time.

I'm having the same problem!! I've tried the Sleep/Home reset but it doesn't work. I can't even turn my phone off, it just keeps flashing the apple logo centre screen.

I spent hours researching this trying to figure out how to fix my wife's phone and finally gave up. I'm not going to do anything Apple doesn't recommend, so lacking any published recommendations I took the phone to one of Apple's Geniuses.

He asked a few questions and then swapped out the coma mode-prone 3G phone for a new one. I went home, restored it as a new phone and...here's the key: did NOT update the new phone from 3.0.1 to 3.1. Problem solved! My only expense was the trip to the Apple store and ~$14 for a new screen protector. Total time at the Genius bar was 15 minutes. Total time restoring: 5 minutes. YMMV.
