Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I keep having the exact same problem as everyone else. At least two times a day my iPhone shuts down and I have to wait at least 5 or 10 minutes in order to do a full reboot. It's so frustrating. Please fix this, Apple!!!

Same problem went to apple store on 25th they acted like they had no clue about the problem. They then went a step further and found that the bottom water detector had turned red. The top one was still white. At this point all the wanted to do was sell another phone or pass the buck to att and get new sim card.
THE PROBLEM STARTED AFTER THE 3.1 UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!
Either let us have 3.0 back or fix your problem. As you can see by all these post its not your customers fault. I have stopped the phone from losing its network. Disable 3G and go back to edge.
Maybe no one has asked nicely, PLEASE

You don't have to wait to do the reboot: just hold both buttons (home/sleep) for several seconds and it will force a reboot.

Ditto from all of the above - Sorry to say but this is kind of like Microsoft.....issue, what issue? Their silence is deafening?

PS - They don't even offer OS 3.1 on the drop down list when you report the issue.....maybe that is the problem. They don't know about it!

This is totally unacceptable. Apple's Software causes all these phones to stop functioning. This is like every Apple product I have owned, when it fails there is no easy way to fix it. The only recommendation is a full system restore, which of course in this case does nothing.

Apple should own up and fix this problem. I have already switched to my backup handset. If Apples doesn't fix this problem, it will be the last Apple product that I will ever purchase.

Of course there is a use in complaining. It makes us all feel better.

Strangely enough, that's something that Apple could do by acknowledging the problem instead of hanging us all out to dry.

OK, I have spoke with APPLE Tech Support 3 times on the phone in the past 3 days. They say that they never heard of this issue (there are 10 pages in this thread alone). I restored twice from a backup and it still happened. I then restored without a backup and started fresh. Didnt put on apps or music on it and it still happens! I JUST got off the phone with Apple tech support and they offered me a advance replacement, $499 from my debit card then mailing me a loaner phone for 3 days while I mail them my phone for repair and a few days later mailing my phone back repaired or replaced and refund my $499, ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? I have never had problems with the iPhone until now and I can't believe whats happening. Apple needs to fix this problem soon. I would threaten to get a different phone but we all know that wont happen. Once you go iPhone you never go back..... Anyway, please fix this Apple and make us happy again!

It's obvious this is a problem. It's obvious Apple doesn't care.

It feels like those townhall meetings with politicians that don't care what people think.

Just to update my two previous posts, after restoring the phone I didn't have problems for 2 days. The problems just started again today. Locked up twice today and had to do a hard reset to get any response from my iPhone.

Definitely upsets me that Apple tries to blame the customer by saying the water indicator is red or that you loaded some new app or that you should be charging from the wall outlet rather than your USB port. This is so ludicrous.

I also have this problem. It is not as severe as some of yall but it still happens atleast once a day. I always thought apple was known for their good "customer serivce" and "reliable" products. However they obviously have turned into a selfish cash cow. I am part of this frustration with every single person in this topic.

    Gonna help yet, Apple?

I'm sure this has been asked before, sorry to repeat. How does one downgrade? Hopefully it's not a complicated task but methinks that big brother may not want us to even attempt this?

They also told me they had no idea what I was talking about when I described the "Coma Mode". Acted like they never heard of it. I mentioned the boards and the Genius said that was just speculation. I told him it was reality and maybe they needed to read it a little more if they didn't already. However I know Apple monitors the boards because they removed my post discussing possible legal remedies.

Next time this happens to someone, try plugging your headphones in and pushing the play button on the headphones to see if the iPod plays.

I've tried this, and nothing happens when I press play-- it's really completely unresponsive.
A related issue, though, is that I've recently noticed that if I have the headphones on but the iPhone is on standby and nothing is playing, I occasionally hear clicks/pops, like the headphone port is being turned on and off. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just once-- i.e., turning off-- but I hear it several times, like it's going on and off or something. This might have always been the case, but I've only noticed it recently, since 3.1. I probably would have noticed it before, since I frequently wear headphones for a while with nothing playing, due to the fact that I listen to a lot of podcasts and there's no graceful way to get iTunes to let you listen to a series of podcasts in a preferred order So sometimes after I listen to a podcast, I'm in the middle of doing something and it tkes me a while to switch to the next one-- during which time I hear the random periodic clicks of the headphone jack going on and off (?)
