Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Darn it... my phone is working just fine after doing a new phone restore with no apps. I hope they (apple)are able to solve the problem. In the meanwhile bad apples.

Well there goes my theory my phone just shut down after working good for 3 days. this is B-S like someone said in an earlier post i guess there is no silver bullet. We'll just have to wait and take it in the shorts.

Everyone should try this: Turn off the fetch schedule for your Mail accounts. It made it less freezey for me.

I installed 3.1 on my girls Iphone 3G 16GB on saturday, we notice battery life improvement over 3.0.1 . I also performed a WiFi download speed test before and after the update and it was faster on 3.1 . All this led me to believe that I was one of the lucky ones without any issues. 3 days without any problems until 2 hours ago. The phone wouldn't respond, it was asleep and neither the home button or sleep/wake button would do anything. I tried rebooting it, but nothing would happen it was as if it was dead. I plugged it in to my macbook and it turned on right away.
I feel bad because I convinced her to update her software, now she is mad and her phone has issues. She is threatening me that she won't give ANY until I fix her phone. Now APPLE you Know as well as I know that I can't do that, YOU are the only one that can.

If I'm smart about all of this I can probably do a complete restore and she will think that her phone is fixed and she'll put out, but how long is that going to work for? 3 days? maybe a week? and then what?. She is going to realize that I am full of it, that I didn't fix her and she will be more ****** than she ever was.
PLEASE APPLE hurry and fix this problem PLEASE,PLEASE, PLEASE.

Add me to the list of the random shutdowns. These shutdowns did stop when I switched off 3G. I switched 3G back on today and within the first hour I got one of these random shut downs. Very inconvenient. AT&T should issue refunds for our September bill.

All this reminds me of all the problems Blackberry storm owners were having when it first came out, are we using BlackBerry OS on our Iphones?

    Same problem for me..

So frustrating. I had heard bad things about 3.1, and really tried to avoid it, but for some reason I assumed I had to upgrade for MMS. My phone was working fine with 3.0, but the DAY I "upgraded" (it wasn't an upgrade as far as I'm concerned), it started doing this random shutdown/screen lock thing. Where I have to hard reset.

PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE. I need this phone to work for me consistently. I can't be loosing the approximately 3 mins each time I have to hard reset.

I was also waiting for apple to release a fix but since it seems nothing is happening in the end was quicker to downgrade to 3.0
Took me maybe 5 minutes more than a normal upgrade and it does not require jailbreaking the phone!

The procedure is very easy and now I have back a Phone that WORKS!
Just google for the how to!

    update:
    Cautious Optimism...

    used this:
    http://jaxov.com/2009/09/revert-back-from-iphone-firmware-3-1-to-firmware-3-0-1/

    ignored number 7
made certain all foofoo were not sync'd initially, but did them later. restored as new iphone. I expected to have 3.01 but it updated and i was saying "OH NO". nonetheless, tonite, so far, i can hit the home button and see my home screen... I did move all nonessential, nonpaid apps out of the way for now. but still....
i'm at 3.1 now and have most apps and am ecstatic. i will try and recreate more detail when I'm not half snoozling. basically, i downloaded 3.01, replaced the 3.1 in the lib, and restored, with update. I've been farting around with this all day, so sorry so lame, but I'm so glad, well, for now...

As with everyone else since upgrading to 3.1 my iPhone has been flaky as ****. However something you might like to try which has worked for me; although I can not explain why it works; is to downgrade your iTunes to 8.2. Previously I was on 9.x versions with 3.1 on the iPhone. With 8.2 iTunes and 3.1 on the iPhone all appears to be well again.

    Anyway, worked for me.

+1. MY PHONE FELL INTO A "COMA" AGAIN NOW. Apple, you need to fix this problem you have created with this new version 3.1. It´s unbelievable you have not fixed it yet. This version harmed thousands of customers and you simply have not done anything to solve. Why don´t you make available the previous version of the official form? Really, i don´t understand this lack consideration with us...Regrettable.

My wife's iPhone 3G with v3.1 had random shutdown like the ones described in this thread. When we we on overseas holidays, she switched to aircraft mode and there was no shutdown. Back home for less than half a day she experienced two random shutdowns.
