Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Just wanted to chime in, my phone is shutting down left and right, have to do a hard reboot at least once a day, the other day I rebooted, and immediately after the reboot, it locked up AGAIN.

I am trying to be patient but I am having similar problems. I went to the Apple Store for help because my phone will randomly stop receiving calls, sending texts, getting mail and wont allow me to dial out. The screen looks normal....no sign of a problem. The only way I know is if I try to make a call or send a text and it does not work. (I find myself sending my son "test" text messages throughout the day just to be sure my phone works). The other problem seems to be that if I talk for more than 10 minutes, the call fails. At that point, it is a given that I will have to reboot for it to work. However, sometimes it happens when I have not been on the phone at all.

This all began after the 3.1 upgrade and possibly more so after the iTunes 9 update. I have been back to the Apple store 2x with another appointment tomorrow. The first time, I tried all the things the girl suggested. The second time (yesterday), I got a replacement phone. I restored this phone as "NEW" and last night, I tried to get on the internet and what do you know....frozen. I had to reboot. I am super frustrated. I need a phone that works!! I pay for a phone that works!!

I upgraded my GF's Iphone... F*CK that was an error.. I did it as soon as the upgrade was available and she has enjoyed a daily coma or three every day since.

I would like to add this issue has 100% caused a turn around in my outlook towards the Iphone and Apple. I will now not be buying fruit based products.. and I am not naive in thinking other smartphones arent equally as susceptible to shoddy upgrades; it's Apples silence on the matter, and reticence on allowing us many, many, sufferers the option of downgrading the phones in the meantime, that is leading me into the arms of Android, WinMo, or Maemo.

And, to keep me onside, all it would have taken is one comment... "We are aware people are experiencing issues with the latest upgrade, please be patient whilst we investigate the issue and look to implement a lasting solution. Apologies for any inconvenience."

How can a company have a great marketing dept and a sh*tty PR one?

Same here. Comas and battery life reduction. 3G updated to 3.1 on O2 in the UK. I have another thread on here covering similar issues "iPhone 3G Battery Nightmare" and would urge those who have complained about battery issues to post in that thread to keep the pressure up. Clearly a lot of unhappy people here and if something is not done soon it's time to start getting some legal recourse, I think. Certainly here in the UK there are expectations when it comes to a product being fit for purpose, and right now my iPhone is anything but that....

Upgraded on the dates of 3.1 and have been getting a total shutdown in my phone atlease 5 times a day ever since. For me EVERY day at about 2:22pm I can count on my phone blacking out and haveing to reboot. All the other shut downs just happen randomly. I love have the phone but this is a problem that Apple is going to have to fix for all of us!

Add me to the list! I updated to the new software and now I have no data at all! Just bars (showing now low signal), the AT&T logo, and a small circle! No visual voicemail either! This blows! All the money I am spending on a phone and now I have almost no service! If Apple does not fix this soon we need to go after AT&T! They are responsible for honoring their contract just as much as we are!!!

I'm just adding my "ditto" into this same problem. It's freakin' annoying. What a great update 3.1 was supposed to be and now it locks up my phone several times a day. Great.

I am also having the same problem. Everytime it shut down, without any issue.
Even after clicking on Home button, it starts taking the Snap/ photograph of the screen, like screen shot. Don't know the issue.

    But it is really frustrating.

Wow, I'm glad I found this thread. I was wondering why my iPhone would keep randomly going into a "coma" throughout the day, having to reboot everytime that happened. I too am FREQUENTLY having this problem since I updated to 3.1. I called Apple Support and they claim no awareness of this issue. Said a restore should work. Of course, not doing that after everything I've read since that proves futile.

Has Apple said anything, anywhere about this yet? Is there a fix out soon??

I have the very same problem, freezes and shutdowns several times a day. I'm a photographer, my phone is essential to my professional life. No restore will solve that problem. What is the problem with Apple today? They should simply acknowledge that there indeed is a major problem with that firmware and let us downgrade to 3.0.1 until they figure it out. What started as a technical issue is turning into a major credibility problem. They should adress that problem quickly, playing dumb will NOT help.

I am having all of the same issues with 3.1 and am trying just to keep it in survival mode. I have few apps and try not to run them. One thing I have noticed that I am not sure if it has been mentioned is that after texting my phone will push all email from both my accounts. This does not happen everytime. I have push on manual and have not accessed it. It never worked this way prior to 3.1.
