Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Count me in with the same unexplained shutdown problem since upgrading to 3.1.

Don't know if anyone else has had the same experience, but my iPhone seems to get extra warm around the time it shuts down. Not sure if it's associated or not.

I really hope they put out a patch/fix/update that addresses this ... this is a huge pain.

I can't believe that there is is no fix for this yet. I had 3 lock ups today. You don't even know that you have been hosed until you go back and try to use the phone.

I have a 3G iPhone and found this post while searching for a solution as well. Looks like there is no solution yet and no response from Apple. Nice, very nice Apple.

My phone locks up about twice daily for the last couple days. And I missed work because I use my phone as an alarm to get up in the morning. Only now, that doesn't work. : (

I have an iPhone 3G (mine) and an original iPhone (my wife's). I upgraded the 3G shortly after it was released. I had at least 5 or 6 shut downs since the 'upgrade.' I read that some people had success with doing a factory restore. So, I tried that. My experience? It started freezing again. And I recently read that one cannot downgrade back to 3.0.1. I don't know what else I can do. I am completely at Apple's mercy and NOT HAPPY about this.

This situation is totally unacceptable. This is a PHONE and my only phone. We have no home phones. It CANNOT be this unstable. The other bells and whistles are completely secondary. When the iPhone is down, I have three computers with which to manage my online life. But NO other way for people to call me... Again, that's NOT ACCEPTABLE!

Apple must release a fix ASAP (that means yesterday not 3 days from now) or permit us to downgrade to 3.0.1.

    Hey,
I had this problem since I upgraded the day the servers posted 3.1. Made an Apple Genius appt and the guy was very nice and stated that one of my apps must have issues with 3.1 and to do a factory restore to a new phone and that should clear the problem up (mind you I went there the day after 3.1 was released). Did that, was clear for about 11 hours and the problem was back.
Also, I dont know if anyone else has noticed this but if you don't do the hard reset it starts back up on its own.
When the genius ran the behavioral report it showed no modem resets, no crashes, nothing. Its def. an issue with the firmware, however I'm going back on Monday to talk this out yet again with them to see where that gets me.

I went to the Apple Store and the Genius engineer said to use iTunes to restore the iPhone as a new phone and do not load the Facebook application as he has seen more iPhone OS corruption caused by the Facebook app than any other application (even though Facebook presumably passed Apple's application store vetting).

So I followed the engineer's advice and now I wait to see if it will behave better, the same, or worse.

I also wanted to note that I ran my phone for 2 days with only the default apps installed and still had the random shut downs. This is by far one of the biggest oversights by Apple, and I hope that people continue to post on this problem and that Apple recognizes this as a real issue and that maybe they should let us know of serious issues before they lock us into a firmware upgrade with no chance to 'legally' go back to a firmware that worked fine. Don't promise improvements and give us problems, you're not Microsoft and I'm not running Win. Mobile for a reason.

A couple observations about the 3.1 software on my iPhone 3G which I find anomalous and potentially related:

    1. When the phone is playing back music, sometimes it feels completely cool to the touch, other times, even if it has plenty of room to breathe, a weird warmth seems to come from about a fingerwidth above the word "iPhone" on the back of the case. The warmth is unique to this firmware, I know this for sure because I was running 2.2.1 prior, and would often feel the phone for warmth as people hit the hitches with 3.0 out of curiosity, and my phone was always very cool to the touch unless I was gaming on it. When running non Apple apps, the heat is significantly more intense.

    2. The phone blasts out cell signals a LOT more than I noticed with the 2.2.1 firmware. When my phone is on the edge network, and I have it near speakers, instead of just a few blasts of interference now and again, it sounds as if I am getting a new text message every couple songs. It's really weird, and sometimes seems to sync up perfectly to a change of song (though I imagine it's me making the correlation). I am not sure how push notifications work, but while I am not getting any push/sms/call when the extensive interference occurs, or doing anything but playing music, it could somehow be related to push.

That all said, in case it helps anyone, my phone does (as mentioned above) have push enabled, for just one app, BeeJive IM. My phone auto passcode locks, my SIM card is PIN protected. I do not use email from my phone. Bluetooth is disabled. WiFi is always enabled and works properly. 3G is often enabled and was enabled when my blackouts occurred.

I just want to add that I too have been having the same problem that everyone else has been describing. I sent a feedback message to Apple.

I also have been having the same problems. I was worried it was just my phone, but this needs to be fixed now.

I was/am having the same issue...

The iPhone config utility was showing all sorts of errors in the log files that looked like this (as many as 100's a min)
unknown configd[23] <Error>: WiFi:[274506621.178826]: Unable to dispatch message to client dataaccessd (0x10000004)
unknown kernel[0] <Debug>: AirPort: Link Down on en0
unknown configd[23] <Error>: WiFi:[274506621.196958]: Unable to dispatch message to client apsd (0x10000004)
unknown configd[23] <Notice>: network configuration changed.
unknown mDNSResponder[18] <Error>: Note: Frequent transitions for interface en0 (169.254.157.119); network traffic reduction measures in effect
    unknown kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleMRVL868x::setDISASSOCIATE() [configd]:
unknown configd[23] <Error>: WiFi:[274506693.948927]: Unable to dispatch message to client dataaccessd (0x10000004)

Also I did notice the iphone was warm when a blackout would happen.

Anyway, I changed the phone's wifi setting from DHCP to use a static ip and have since not seen any of these errors in the log file nor have I had a blackout since.

Hope this helps others as it did me
    Chad

Same problem - we have 4 iPhones in the household and two of the four are experiencing random shutdowns since the download of the 3.1 update. It's very frustrating because the phone(s) go completely dead and a reboot is needed. This has happen to my phone and my sons phone multiple times over the last few days. Sometimes the phone won't reboot for 15 mins. or so. We need a fix to this problem soon! HELP PLEASE!!!

    Hi all,

Like everyone here I've been plagued by random shutdowns and "comas" since upgrading my iPhone 3G to 3.1. However, I may have found something. Had a look at the crash logs in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/My iPhone and at around each time that my phone went into coma mode I noticed that an app had crashed with the following reason:

"com.blah.someapp failed to terminate in time"

So all I did was uninstall the offending application(s) and I haven't had any more comas for the last 24 hours.

It may be a case that 3.1 is more sensitive to these types of app crashes. I noticed a ton these types of crashes for dates pre 3.1 update as well. Never had a random shutdown / coma previously.
