Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I can confirm also have the same issue since installed 3.1 . my iPhone became a piece of useless device because of this.

MR. Jobs, we'll we get our money back?

and "one more thing", please stop releasing products are not fully tested.

if Microsoft did something like did Mr. Jobs would be using it on his keynotes, so please learn and fix it ASAP.

    an annoyed and disappointed user.

My phone stops responding (coma mode) 3-4 times per day ever since I upgraded to 3.1

If I leave it alone for 10-15 minutes, sometimes it comes back.

Otherwise, I have to do a hard reboot...

I am shocked that apple won't admit to this problem. When you call tech support, they play dumb and act like they have never heard of this.

In just the minutes it took to register to respond in this thread, someone posted virtually what I wanted to say

Random comas, multiple times a day

After some extensive reading on various blogs, I called apple support

Apple support amazed me with the depth of ignorance of this problem they claimed. Don't get me wrong, the woman I spoke with was certainly professional, but to tell me she was surprised to hear of my problems was just insulting

I should restore done that I should make an appointment with the genius bar, really?

It's good that I called because if people don't report these issues, they are unaware and can't begin the process of addressing them

    Are they kidding?

At least acknowledge that there are issues, and that they're working on them

To insult our intelligence, saddens me more than a little

I'll be a good sheep and keep my genius appt let's see where it gets me

The only fix is to restore back to 3.0.1

Yes it is somewhat of a pain to do so, but it is SO worth it.

Since I went back to 3.0.1, NO more comas, MUCH better battery life, and the auto-brightness started working again. I will not be upgrading the firmware for a VERY long time.

    Hello all..

Count me as one the hundreds or thousands disappointed iphone owner, though i just updated my iphone os from os 3.01 to 3.1 just two days ago, i didn't initially updated to 3.1 when it was released..and i did what was right..OS 3.1 surely has major problems.

Now the reason why i updated is i really want to see whether Apple really cares and work around the clock to resolve this issues..and same like many of you, i am very disappointed, it still *****. Though, i may found out what just may caused the problems, i think somebody has written about this before, sorry i cant find his name. He/she has said, that OS3.1 hangs/locked up whenever it is working on some apps, normally one that requires internet connection and your iPhone lost its network connection whether its cell or wifi, i have did a simple test on this and it just locked everytime it lost its connection. its Confirmed, that major issues on OS3.1 has everything to do with the network connection, so APPLE people get on to it..please..fix it!

now.. i also found something interesting, this one you all can try it out, it works for me, here goes, when my phone locked, dead, black..just dead..nothings working pressing home button, power button.just nothing happened..and i start panicking and start blaming my self, i ran thru my macbook pro.. with my usb cable, so i just plugged in to the iphone..and.."BADABING" there it goes.. its alive..and everything so normal.. as if nothing has happened.. just happily wierd.. so i did couple of experiment..and it worked everytime.. it includes plugging the iphone to the usb cable on power plug, not to usb port on my mac.. "BADABOM" ...it came back to live.. stupid..

i must add.. that when my phone locked, i tried calling it, txt, everything..from my other cellphone, it says it was dead, out of coverage blah blah.. but when i did the plugging cable thingy.. it just went back normal and when i try calling my iphone it just went thru..no problem.. and when my iphone came back to live, i dont even have to type in my pin number, or unlock or anything..just like i said.. as if it just nothing happened to is...

APPLE please fix it.. i hope this help many of you guys iphone user..this is not a solution,..

    so thats it..

    goodluck guys!
    Cheers!

Good afternoon! Know I has collided with such a situation having updated an insertion on 3.1 at me has badly started to work iphone 3G, the first, that I have noticed to me began to complain, that to me cannot phone, I have checked up a network all is, and I am valid and itself I can not will phone hooters there is no, helped only an overload of phone, the second that me has disappointed in this production so this that that phone in itself was spontaneously switched off what to not eat well what to do, wait insertion 3.1.1 or to carry phone in shop and let change on new... Who will prompt as to struggle with such problem.

I during a life did not know such problems with phone, were at меян worthy phones and when I had no with them a problem, and updated insertions itself, all was always good, and with production an apple I now think to fasten...

I'm also having problems with my iPhone since I updated to 3.1. I don't seem to be experiencing them just quite as bad as some others, but it is still very annoying. I've switched off 3G and that more or less gives me a working phone. However, in my case it's my signal strength that seems to be fluctuating quite dramatically. The phone can sitting on the table with 5 bars showing and then go to "No Service" without anybody touching it. I can understand small variations in the signal strength, but to go from maximum to no signal is pretty poor. The fact that it is happening all over the world with different service providers and also to so many phones clearly points to a software problem (as if we didn't already know). The fact that Apple employees claim to be unaware of the problem when they obviously do know about it suggests that Apple is frightened to admit liability for breaking so many peoples phones and leaving themselves open to being sued and has therefore told their employees to deny all knowledge of the problem. I'm sure that they are working furiously behind the scenes to come up with a solution. Because of the random nature of the problem and the different variations it's obviously difficult to pin down and that's why it's taking so long. However I do think that they could have offered a temporary fix to downgrade to 3.0 or 3.01 under the guise of "not liking the facilities of the newer upgrade".

I'm new to Apple products and to be honest I'm not impressed. Lets just say that I won't be rushing out soon to buy something else that has an apple logo on it.

So i'm running 3.0.1 on my 3GS 32gb, but am experiencing same shutdowns intermittently. The only thing i found that this "shutdown" and battery drain are the complementary things - the iphone shuts off, when the battery is drained till 0. Some of us catches the battery drain itself, but some only experiencing the final stage - the phone shuts off.

With 3.01 i was happy user for about 1 month ( no battery drain, no shut offs), but whithout any visible reason it has started to behave same way as it would be upgraded to 3.1

Apple should look deeper in the sense of this bug - it's heritaged in 3.1 from earlier versions

same here, i don't seem to have all the problems that the others are experiencing, OS3.1 sure needs major fix, but the only annoying thing is the locked down, drop dead, blackout..but i have found a way how to revive it.. and by the way, the locked down, has only happened to me once, and never happened ever since, the only locked down issues happened repeatedly during my experiment only..

anyway, i wish the update will be released soon..

Add in yet one more phone. My wife/brother/sister/brother-in-law are all heavy mac users with iphones. My dad finally got an iPhone 2-weeks ago and the darn thing constantly needs to be reset. He went to the apple store and was told that's just how iPhones are. BS Apple. We called everyone in the family and NO ONE has had this problem with their phones. Ours are 3G phones but not as new as his. So, to add some fuel to the discussion, maybe it is just newer 3G phones?

My dad swears this is the last apple product he will buy after being lied to by the tech support at the store. He has about 5 macs in his house. I run two businesses off of many many macs - if my phone starts acting like this, I'll move to a blackberry or something else. If I can't trust my phone to be, well, a phone, no point in all the other add ons.

I am experiencing the same issue since upgrading to the new software. Random shut down at least once a day. Only way to get it back is a hard reboot.

Dimitry, i have not solve anything yet, i just happened found a way to bring back my dead or deenergizing iphone, it work for me accidently for the first time, so afterwards, i did an experiment..and it works, for me though, so i don't think it solve the problems, it just a temporary, though my iphone works just fine now with OS3.1, but APPLE still owes us great deal in releasing the updated OS.

Its only human, born to make mistakes... I do not require Apple to admit anything. I cant be bothered. I just want apple to issue an anticipated release date of OS 3.1.1 before this day ends. I em fed up with this coma bug. I feel like leaving it in coma forever and to get another cellular from another brand.

Why on earth is Apple unable until now to announce the release date of 3.1.1.? Is informing your loyal customers on anticipated developments a crime? Apple use your head and give us a horizon!
