Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Just wanted to chime in... This is BS! I have the same issues as everyone on this post. Obvious 3.1 software issue. All apple had to do was allow us to downgrade back to 3.0 while they get their ** together with 3.1 and everyone would be happy. But instead they deny everything and treat us like idiots by telling us to "restart or restore." Really!? I wouldn't be calling you "geniuses" if I hadn't tried everything already! My phone is still under warranty and I guard the moisture sensors with my life so I am going to my appointment tomorrow to get a new phone, hopefully with 3.0.1. And I will be back everyday asking for a new one until this is sorted out. Maybe after they hand out thousands of new phones to customers for free and lose all that money they will remedy the situation. I JUST WANT 3.0 BACK!

Can you believe that Apple had the balls to emailed me a customer satisfaction survey?

My phone was working fine under 3.01. I upgraded to get the MMS texting and now my phone randomly shuts off and I am seeing no fix for it.

I posted that Apple should at least allow us to downgrade back to 3.0.1 until they figure out the problem. They removed the post and emailed me that it was a "non-constructive rant."

I guess my rant was about as non-constructive as Apple refusing to admit to and fix their issues.

I wish they would email me so that I would have an address to send my complaints to.

I am having the same issues -- complete shutdowns, requiring hard reset, and random (and otherwise invisible) lack of phone service: no calls out, none in.

And I am having the same disintegration of support for Apple.

The only long term fix I've found to work is turning 3g off. At least I get my phone, web browser, texting back. Although the web browsing is slow, I can live with that for the time being.

But what's not acceptable is hearing, "Oh yes we called you for that job but you never picked up" NOT ACCEPTABLE APPLE!!!! Or what about someone else who may have been waiting for, "Honey come get me the I'm having the baby NOW"! Ooopps sorry pal the IT guys at Apple are jerkin around!! They decided to not admit or fix the problem.

Apple is a joke for not even recognizing this problem. I can tell you one thing for sure..this major screw up on their part has made me decide not to buy a 3GS this christmas. Geez we just want a phone that works Apple, get with the program.

My random shutdown problem is now at several times per day and completely random. Is anyone at Apple reading/listening? Some acknowledgement would be great. Visited an Apple store earlier in the week and they are very aware of the problem and that it is widespread,

Turning off 3G didn't work. It worked for about 12 hours but the problem eventually came back. Restoring as a new phone AND restoring from a backup bandaged the problem for 2 days, but the problem came back. It's just kind of weird how certain measures will temporarily fix a situation and others will do nothing at all. Unfortunately the temporary fixes seem to not share a common thread making it impossible to diagnose this problem.

This is like the ultimate episode of HOUSE. It's the apps. No, it's the water damage. No, it's the restore. No, it's locking the phone at 1:53pm. No, it's...it's...it's...APPLE. Just downgrade us to 3.0 please!!!

The worst part is that this isn't the only problem from 3.1. There are battery life issues with 3.1. MMS issues with 3.1.

I've had the random crashes too. I sent it to Apple, got a new one (refurbished), updated it to 3.1 and restored it completely (with data from my old iPhone) and it works without any crashes for one week now. So it has to be some kind of hardware issue!

Its NOT a hardware issue, my iphone has worked well for over one year until I installed 3.1 then bang its now a major failure, unexpected failures every couple of days. As hundreds of people have reported here the only solution is to return to a 3.0.x firmware release. Reports from various apple support contacts suggest they are very aware of the issue and I assume a fix will pop up soon(ish). So unless the "upgrade now" timer has expired in some hardware chip then would assume that the code monkeys are working late into the night to resolve this one before it develops into really bad PR (maybe it is already?).

It's funny how the tech assistant spoke to me as if I was an idiot and didnt know what I was talking about .... after drilling him (I am a very technical person and develop system level software for a living) for a while, he put me on hold and made a call to a level 2 support and came back saying it is definitely a hardware issue .... just like that without looking to any logs or diagnostics on my device .... this is clear indication that APPLE is stalling .... they will not admit to a major goof up like this ..... GOD forbid their stock value goes down b4 close of 3rd quarter .... shame on u Apple!! I see Apple become the next Microsoft .... lol

I just went ahead and downgraded (actually thats an upgrade .. lol) to firmware 3.0.1 ..... its been gr8 for a week now

At least vista sufferers got to downgrade to xp. Someone should be saving this thread. Knowing apple it will all of a sudden vanish, and then they'll be like, "What 3.1 issues? No one is complaining." My paperweight, I mean iPhone, was fine until 3.1 update. Now I just admire my reflection in the shiny black screen where my apps used to be.

Apple needs to rethink it's whole idea of business/consumer responsibilities. Doesn't such a company, who's survival depends on those who purchase their products, have the obligation to keep those individuals happy and their product working properly. I am disgusted with apples lack of care in releasing products and updates such as the 3.1 which obviously have poor, if any, quality control. The newest OS 3.1 update has an incredible amount of issues coupled with a tremendous outcry from users with no reply. These users, myself included, have dished out enough money to the mighty Apple that one would expect a simple reply (and promise of a solution) to these problems, at the least. How can such a successful company be so blase in regards to customer service when such a crap "update" (an "update" in the most miniscule characteristics) has been introduced to one of their leading product lines. I was first amazed that the iPhone couldn't handle multi media texting. Now I am amazed that updating to this oh so common capability comes with all the inconvenience possible, a phone that is incapable of reliably working in the most basic sense. So, it seem as though Apple is slowly slipping into that pool of manufacturers and industry leaders (such as our American auto industry) who fail to keep up with the quality and care needed to continue providing revolutionary products which people can trust and use without worry of failure at the most inopportune times. This greed of success (I assume, whole-heartedly) has destroyed the philosophy by which producers must standardize their vocation to the industry to encourage healthy competition and happy consumers. I hope that Apple will see that it is necessary to approach these issues and evolve their process to incorporate the means to provide quality and care, not just quantity and profit. Business is Business, but the consumer lies at the heart of it all.
