Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Stop complaining you sniveling wretches. So your iPhones turn off a few times a day. It's probably for the best anyway. Here's my troubleshooting advice: When your phone turns off, turn it back on. And when it turns off again in a few hours or so, turn it back on again. Repeat as necessary. Just like shampoo. I used to be angry, about this, but now I have grown kind of used to it and you know what? I kind of LIKE it. I'm hoping they never fix it. And maybe for the next upgrade to 3.2, Apple will send a burly weight lifter with a sledge hammer to smash my iPhone into a million pieces while saying, "Here's your stinkin upgrade you miserable little wretch."

That's rediculous. I think it would be different if you found out that you missed a call because your "update" shut off your iPhone. That theoretical phone call just so happened to be a doctor telling you that your wife was in a car accident and that she didn't have much time left, so if you wanted to say your goodbyes, get your *** to the hospital. However, you missed the call and your wife died alone and scared. Although you are satisfied with the "I missed you call because my phone crashed" excuse because you are bitter and cannot enjoy the people in your life, I am not.

You are assuming that I am married. I am not. So if a doctor was calling me to tell me that my wife was in a car accident, it would have been a wrong number. That's great that the iPhone 3.1 bug causes me to miss wrong numbers that waste my time! This just gets better and better. Apple DO NOT FIX THIS BUG PLEASE. I hate wrong numbers.

At least vista sufferers got to downgrade to xp. Someone should be saving this thread. Knowing apple it will all of a sudden vanish, and then they'll be like, "What 3.1 issues? No one is complaining." My paperweight, I mean iPhone, was fine until 3.1 update. Now I just admire my reflection in the shiny black screen where my apps used to be.

Sorry, but Vista never caused anything to break. I'm a happy Vista user and have been since day one. Since I'm writing this on my Vista machine it seems that I've got a leg up over any non-working iPhone.

My phone that I exchanged came with 3.01. I did not upgrade. I restored to a backup that was back in August. Now it is beginning to have calls go straight to voice mail and the screen refuses to recognize finger touches some of the time. It acts just like a virus.

Now my iPhone is going into coma mode multiple times a day, in fact I am starting to wonder if it is getting worse

Still no news from Apple, this is getting to be ridiculous for them and frankly embarrassing. I think it is truly pathetic that such a large company that prides itself on statements like 'it just works' has nothing at all to say in response to this. Apple's attitude towards this is now starting to come across as cowardly.

Apple, please take a note of others who have the decency to admit problems and let their customers know that something is being done about it. Microsoft, for example, released Halo ODST last week and have already admitted that they are aware of some problems with the game and want people to know they are working on it. There you go, wasn't hard was it?

Grow up and get some balls Apple, admit you made a mistake and talk to your customers.

Was having all of the same issues and then some:

    Black non-responsive screen aka "comas"
    safari crashes to home screen
    apps crash to home screen
iPod music skips while using safari
opened iPod once and library was blank
issues with returning from landscape view in cover flow in iPod

Someone posted here earlier to try turning auto-lock off. I did and I haven't had any "comas" in two days. Might just be a coincidence as this "bug" is pretty random. Did it work for anyone else?

Hmmm, am I missing something here? the max that I can set my auto-lock to is 5 minutes, not 'never' or anything like that.

Do I have to do something to enable this or is it a difference on the UK models?

I have my auto-lock set to "never". Might be a US setting, I don't know. It's a hassle in that I have to remember to lock my phone or the screen stays on and drains the already shortened battery-life but no "comas".

I am having the same issue as well, they need to release an update. This is not the apple experience that I am used to.

My second following to this topic.

My iPhone is still in trouble. There are my trouble list:

    - Going to coma mode several times a day.
    - Have to hard reset.
    - Short life battery.
    - Don't recharge with AC adapter.
    - Only with Power USB at PC.
    - Don't play iPod.
    - Music changes randomly.

I'm missing my HTC Diamond device...

This is my first experience with Apple devices and I'm disappointed...

I've also had the coma problem since 3.1.

However, yesterday I downloaded a Carrier Update through iTunes. I rebooted the phone and all sorts of weird things happened. The phone went into coma and the battery dropped to almost 0% (first time I've had that problem).

I did a factory setting reset of the phone, re-downloaded 3.1 and the Carrier Update and did not restore the phone from a backup, I let it come up clean and reloaded everything.

The phone now works like a charm. No coma, no battery problem, etc. I've no idea if this is coincidence, but it seems to work now.

has anyone tried plugging in your iphone to your pc/mac with or without itunes running or to a power source using usb/data cable during locked up? i did that while panicking, and i manage to recover my iphone, safely as if nothing happened .. i know this is not a solution, but it helps me..
