Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

When we bought our iPhones did we get a 1 year guarantee? And does that guarantee apply to a defective iPhone within 1 year of purchased? After upgrading to 3.1 my iPhone has become defective. It shutdowns down and misses calls randomly which has made me believe that my iPhone is defective and a replacement is guaranteed. What if we all returned our iPhones to where we got them and asked for a replacement of our defective iPhones. Do you think Apple has enough iPhones to keep up with the demand?

When 3.1 came out I installed it - and began to have the 'comatose' problems. Plugging it into a power source brought it back to life immediately. I experienced more dropped calls then I would usually get, the comatose issue, and an inability to be able to dial out after listening to a VM - I had to reboot or plug it into a power source.

On the 25th I downloaded the carrier file for MMS and restarted the phone. Since that point in time - up through today (9/30) - I have not experienced any issues. In fact, there are two locations on my drive home where I pretty much can expect to drop a call - I can now talk all the way home - no dropped calls.

If this changes, I'll post a note.

    Hey guys,
Posted here before with the same problem.
Went ahead and erased the copy of 3.1 that I had on my computer, downloaded another copy and reinstalled as a new phone. Did this on Sunday and haven't experienced the mysterious shutdown once since then... and this was happening to me over 4 times/day. Also turned off "fraud warning", but doubt that has anything to do with it. Though I'm willing to believe that some of us somehow ended up with a slightly corrupted or buggy version of the firmware... or Apple fixed the problem without letting us know.

    Hi!

For me, plugging in the iphone doesn't work in comatose state, only the hard reset wakes it up. What I've found out is that while you have it plugged in, no "comas" occur...At least not in my case.

    Good luck to y'all!

Given all these posts and the extraordinary number of viewings, this obviously isn't just some "random" problem. I had my phone go into a "coma" 7 times today. After speaking to another Apple tech support person, I'm just floored that they say they haven't heard of this problem. I asked them to check these message boards.

Bottom line, I'll need an answer from Apple soon about when the fix is going to be coming out for this or I might have to bail on this phone. I don't want to, but given the critical nature and urgency in which I use my device, these random shutdowns are more than just a headache.

Apple, please respond on this board and let us know when we can anticipate a fix. Just a mere acknowledgement of the issue would at least give us some faith that you're seriously looking into remedying this soon. At the minimum, give us some "workaround" so we can at least employ some temporary measures to avoid this issue.

    @Talibabs Hi!

too bad it didn't work for you, but funny thing is that when my iphone in comatose state, none is working, hard reset, everything, it just completely dead locked.. that's why i'm so totally panic.. only plugging in the iphone the way to brings it back to live. Anyway, maybe the we may have many different reasons why the iphone went coma, that proven that this OS3.1 is totally super bad product.

Anyway, i must add, my iphone only locked up/coma by it self one time. Since, my iphone went dead on purpose during my experiments (3 times). But every time it is saved by plugging in, and it has been so normal ever since. No locked up, battery just fine, everything just like OS3.01.. etc.

    cheers!

Well, then that's not the same "coma" that my iphone's having, lol! And you're lucky, only happenning on purpose...What do you mean on purpose, btw, lol? What do you do exactly?

I can't read through 104 pages... so... I'll just note here that my iPhone (on 3.1) when on the charger is actually losing battery life... Instead of gaining it :/

It goes between charging and simply not charging - depleting at a very fast rate (15% an hour or so).

    @Talibabs

HAHA LOL, really? so who's iphone is having a better coma? yours or mine? LOL we shouldn't even proud that our iphone went in to coma.. BAD APPLE!

On purpose, means that i was doing an experiment, after the first "coma" or simply just dead iphone to me.. what i did exactly on my experiment is that i activated all network features, wifi, push notification, push email, location services, 3G, and fetch mail.. and also running my YM on push. Please note that my wifi is connected to internet and my cell 3G is active in the area. So, then i literally went in to an area that my home wifi cannot reach, so there is the problem, when the iphone push services or simply just the network connection is looking for active connection it just went dead, that is when i found my iphone locked or comma, i try calling, txting, and so on, it says that it was dead, could not be reach..

so that's it.. like u said.. luckily i was always be able to recover it by just plugging in..and simply just plug it out after..and i have my iPhone back to normal..

One other thing though, when i first updated to 3.1, my batter lasts longer than ever before..with normal usage.. i mean, it lasts for 1 day and 5 hrs, for (est)6hrs of usages (internet, phonecall, txt, ipod but no gaming) and the battery just normal without me plugging it in after the first update. too bad i didn't screen capture this which i normally does. but now, the battery just normal..12-16 hrs for 5-6 hrs usages..

    cheers!

Started having the random shutdowns with my 3G. Genius told me to do a complete restore as a new iPhone, which I did. It only made the problem worse - 6 times in 1 hour after the restore. So I went back to Apple, and they gave me a new (likely refurb) 16GB 3G iPhone. I was happy, hoping this would work.

Day two with my replacement iPhone (with 3.1 software) - It shut down twice! Seriously!?

Back to the Apple store. Maybe I can pay for an upgrade to a 3GS.

yeah, I've also been noticing that the battery life lasts longer...

I guess the more loaded the iphone is, the more comas he gets into - that's why people with more apps, network and push notifications are comatosed more often.. (no pun intended :p)

    lol
baaaaaaaaaah, appleeee, save us from this penance!

    Robnbill-

Where did you get the MMS carrier file? I had previously updated to 3.1 and had MMS capability and was still having the coma problem. I returned my phone for a new one with 3.0.1 installed and everything is working like a charm, no coma, etc. The problem, of course, is that I don't have MMS with 3.0.1.

Does anyone know of a way to get MMS without 3.1?

    Thanks.

    Grandpuda,

You should take it back and get a replacement!
