Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Hi, I updated to 3.1 last week and only today I've had my first total shutdown. The phone was okay and I just put it to sleep but wanted to use it again almost straight away. But it didn't want to wake up. I had to restart it after asking a friend how to do it. I didn't know how you restart it so it took ages.
Whilst I was waiting I thought I'd phone it just in case it woke it up but strangely on the phone I was using you could hear it ringing (but not the iPhone itself) after about 10 rings it went through to the answer phone.

I do hope this isn't the start of a big problem because a lot of people here appear to be affected much more than me.

SInce installing 3.1 two weeks ago, the following problems have occurred and I want to log my experience along with 100's of others here:

    1) Random shut-downs occurring once or twice a day typically after a time-out -- I have to do a manual reboot to resolve

    2) Battery Life drastically reduced dropping from fully-charged to 50% within an hour -- I have to keep it plugged in at my desk whenever possible

    3) Beginning 9/29, 3G reception is completely gone and calls are going right to voicemail -- I have temporarily turned off 3G under settings tonight to run with Edge (I will observe tomorrow how this may temporarily alleviate battery issue)

I have never experienced any issues with iPhone updates before, this is a first for me and all three issues are impacting my productivity. I hope Apple resolves this quickly and provides us a 3.11 update. Greg

Exactly my same issues. AT&T Device Support here in PR has swapped my iPhone twice as I thought the hardware was just going bad. In a way I regret doing that, since I most likely received a refurbished unit. Ohh well... I have dropped Push to see if my battery life increases: I was having 1 hour's worth (tops) of full battery before the red indicator came on. Definitely hope Apple is taking notice.

I Posted here before as I had most of the problems frequently. Would like to know if it works for more of us.

    Everyone:

I'm having the same issues with my iPhone 3G, 6-8 times a day. I'm missing calls (some important!) and it's killing my battery life.

Help me build awareness of the issue on Twitter through the #iphonecoma tag. Several of my coworkers are experiencing the same issues, and hopefully we can convince Apple that this isn't just an isolated bug.

All, I am also experiencing similar issues since upgrading my 3GS to software version 3.1. Issues I have experienced:

    1. My iPhone becomes unresponsive and cannot be used or woken up. The first time this happened when the phone was put to sleep, but it has since occurred while the phone was locked. The only way to resolve the condition is to push the home and sleep button simultaneously to force a hard reboot of the phone.

    2. I have experienced a much larger number of dropped calls.

    3. I have problems making and receiving calls even when a strong signal is available. In some cases the call initiates with “calling mobile” and simply hangs. The only solution is to force a reboot of the phone.

    4. My battery life is also worse than prior to the 3.1 upgrade.

    5. Finally, I have experienced a failure in Microsoft Exchange syncing on several occasions.

Clearly, there are a large number of users experiencing similar issues. Is Apple working on a fix to 3.1? My local Apple store has not been of much use.

I have been experiencing the same thing, with my phone freezing a couple of times a day. I use Push and I notice the freeze-up when I hear the email chime and go to check it and find the phone dead. I don't know if that is somehow causing the problem or I only discover it then, but since I am hearing the chime, I assume the phone is working up to that point. Yesterday was the first confirmation I had that incoming calls are affected as well, even when the phone appears to be working. I spoke with Apple, and the woman I spoke with had never heard of this problem, so she suggested the usual remedies. One would think that with over 1700 posts complaining about the same thing that Apple might take note.

Because of the frequent 3.1 comas I brought my six month old 16GB 3G to my provider (t-mobile). They sent it to Apple and after a week gave me a replacement (new looking guess refurbished) with 3.0.1.

I posted my same problem while back in this thread, but wanted to add some info.
I have noticed when my iphone goes into coma state i hear the email alert sound just before it comas. I hear it once before and it was right at the time i heard the email alert. Maybe has something todo with email notification? Just passing on what i have been noticing on my iphone just before coma state. Plus mine doesnt do it all the time, may once aday or every other day. But i dont get that many emails. maybe just acouple a day.

Mine froze 6 times in the past 2 hours... for those of you who got replacement phones with older versions on them... its my understanding you can't restore a backup of the phone to an older version? Did you find some way to overcome this? I'm all for a trip to the apple store, but i dont want to have to reapply all my apps and settings, etc...

I was lucky, I had been syncing my phone with two different computers. One of them had an old backup. When I got a new phone with 3.01 I took it home and put a restore from back in AUGUST on it. It works fine now for the most part. I'm still missing a call or two and it's a little cludgy sometimes with finger touches but over all it's back to normal. If you don't have an old restore you are just SOL.

Where does iTunes store the backups on a mac? Would it be possible to retrieve an old one from Time Machine?
