Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

So much for those PC and Mac Guy commercials... looks like Apple is turning into Microsoft.

Ship it out... hope it works... fix it later (maybe).

Maybe I'm better off with a Blackberry at this point.

My wife has the 3G and has CONSTANT problems with battery, signal, calls, SMS, basically the entire phone since the 3.1 update. Tried resetting network settings, restore and restore without backup - nothing has fixed it!

I have the 3GS - only issue is with the battery. At 50% or thereabouts, it will just turn off and I have a completely drained battery. ??? Now I can't count on the indicator to tell me where the batter level is - what gives!!!

I am really disappointed with Apple - never would I of thought they would release such bad work (update).

OK, I have tried turning off 3G and it does seem to slow the number of random shutdowns. Of course, hoping this is a temporary fix as my phone is a...3G!!!

Apple, please respond ASAP and let us know what you're doing to fix this.

I reverted back to 3.0.1 last night. I have had no issues since (keeping my fingers crossed). I still had the AT&T 5.5 (MMS enabled) carrier file on my PC, and was able to apply it as well. So, I'm running 3.0.1 with MMS.

Instructions on how to downgrade to 3.0.1: http://www.redmondpie.com/downgrade-iphone-3.1-to-3.0.1/

Instructions on how to apply the carrier file to 3.0.1: http://www.redmondpie.com/enable-att-mms-update-on-iphone-3.0.1-with-itunes-pzi8 97/

On tuesday my Iphone 3G did it first random shut down, requiring me to do a reboot it via the old hold home and power button trick. Then this morning it did it again. Phoned O2 to discuss the issue and was told about the fairly widespread issue. I was advised that I could take it to an apple store who could run some sort of system check thing, in case its properly broken. I am considering changing over to blackberry in april when my contract is up, or i might (if there is no solution soon) pay to change over earlier if its possible. I won't turn off the 3G because thats what the phone is meant to be able to do. And if Apple can do what it says on the tin I am outta here. If anyone knows when the solution is likely to present itself that would be awesome.

    Cheers

A solution that worked for me (3G, 8gb, 3.1) that others have written about - switching all three email accounts and calendars to manual sync.

Had: MS Exchange (work), mobileme, and gmail. First I shut off mobileme, and screen tap response times went down dramatically, but still had comas 3-5 times daily. Once I shut off FETCH for gmail and switched Exchange for work emails/calendars to manual, the phone is fast (app launches), screen tap response times very quick, and zero comas -- seven days now. All with 3.1 and maybe 30 apps installed.

Might not work for everyone, but before downgrading you might want to try this method if you can live without push/fetch email until the fix arrives.

Well, I was considering getting my girlfriend her mac of choice this year for christmas. Now that she, and I for that matter, have two phones that won't answer calls on a consistant basis, (post 3.1 lockup issues, ours lockup when trying to answer a call from sleep mode) from a company who won't put out any information to its own forums for helpless users, I don't think we are going to go the apple route for our computing needs. In fact, reconsidering using apple for our phone needs as well.
ATT plus faulty software from Apple = Us heading on back over to the Palm camp and enjoying the Pre on a faster network.

I used to be a die hard all the way fan of Apple. Now I am outraged Apple does not even project a release date for 3.1.1 or 3.2 "that enhances security and some bug fixes". My iPhone turned into a comaphone, it became a useless piece of .... that I might just as well dump in one of the Amsterdam canals. This is no gppd PR Apple boys and girls! You are turning my love into bitter hate leaving me completely uninformed about when to expect a resolution. This is insane!

Same here, together with worse battery life + random "NO SERVICE" indicator.

Any updates in the way, Apple?

I have experienced this issue as well. This occurance is up to 3-4 times a day now. I press the sleep/wake button, the phone is unresponsive. The only way to get it back online is to reboot (sleep/wake + home button). I have tried restoring the phone to no success. Apple please fix this! We finally get MMS but in return get a buggy OS.

I had first downloaded 3.1the day it came out - and then a wek or two later - connected to iTunes and it updated just the carrier file (5.5). It's been running quite well now. So far I'm lucky. Although I will not update our other iPhone until a fix is issued.

I am checking for an update several times a day now. iTunes seems to feel my anger and takes a long to time to search well... unfortunately, my 3.1 OS is still reported the current version. Why does it seem so hard for Apple just to announce an anticipated release date for 3.1.1 or 3.2? Why cant they tell me something like "ultimately first week of october 2009"?

Why are we left uninformed and ignored with our comaphones? Is this customer service? No its not. Its customer insulting. I am so angry about this! What is going on in their minds anyway?!

Won't this void our warranty? Downgrading to 3.0, that is.
