Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I was wondering the same thing. Will downgrading to 3.0.1 void my warranty? If in the future my phone has an actual hardware issue, and I take it in, will they be able to tell through testing that I manually downgraded and void my warranty?

Also would I have a hard time updating in the future IF a fix ever comes out?

No, down grading will NOT void your warranty. Anyone that tells you that it will doesn't know what they are talking about. A phone is supposed to be a phone. If you load software that doesn't change a thing. Look up the Magnusson-Moss Act. That will tell you what you need to know. For instance, if you put oil in your car that the manufacturer doesn't recommend, they can't void your warranty unless they can PROVE that the oil caused the problem. In our case Apple would have to prove that the old software harmed the phone, and they would be pretty tough since they are still handing out phones with 3.01 on them.

    Greetings,

I've never had a spontaneous shutdown of any kind, on my 3G, or my wife's 3Gs. In fact the phones have never given either of us any problems and are absolute jewels, as the first generation is.

This has become a bazar thread, and most of it is pretty ludicrous. It (the 3.1 software) was tested, throughly, and that I can attest to.

Apple cannot design for whatever trashy software and mishandling you might have done to the phone. Instead of complaining and whining here, people need to seek out an Apple store and work through it.

Most of these problems are self induced. If a complete restore, as new, doesn't do it, then you might have a faulty iPhone. Have it checked.

    Cheers,
    M.

phonecoma update: I just got off the phone with AT&T right now, and they have opened a case. They say they will call me back in 5 biz days and gave me a token credit on the bill. Mebbe pressure from the carrier will assist in escalation. They were aware of it, but I think more ppl should call and complain, to show AT&T how widespread the problem is.

i had similar problems to what most people are reporting. my problem was losing the network and not being able to get it back till rebooting the phone. the phone appeared to be on the network with full bars but no calls could come in or out. this would happen at least twice a day.

after numerous attempts to restore on my own, i went to the apple store, got a new 3gs iphone. restored as a new phone. 2 hours later the problem came back. i was out of ideas.

i heard a couple of people mention the sim card could be bad. i went to at&t and got a new free sim card. 3 days later everything is working fine with 3.1
could it be 3.1 somehow damaged the sims or the ability for them to function properly? we will probably never know. but try a new sim card. it worked for me. i haven't experienced any network problems or freezes since.

    To Monty1945,

So your saying that all of a sudden thousands of iphones have the same hardware problem all within the same week? At the same time 3.1 came out? Are you that much of an idiot? Really? Oh wait you probably work for apple. . . so you can't be an idiot. . . you must be a "genius."

Sorry I know I'm feeding the troll.

Everyone - if you are having this issue and your iPhone is still under warranty, go to the Apple store and get it replaced. If they give you a phone with 3.0.1 that doesn't have any issues, GREAT. If they give you a 3.1 phone and it still has issues, keep trading until you get a phone that works. Replacing phones costs Apple money, and hitting them in the pocketbook is probably the best way to get the issue addressed in a timely manner.

Unfortunately mine's out of warranty, so I don't have this advantage. I downgraded to 3.0.1, which has solved my problems.

If your phone is still in warranty and you have not purchased AppleCare, I would recommend it. It extends your warranty for an additional year. I regret not doing so.

Surely you jest!!! Most people here don't have the computer knowledge to make an iPhone crash like this.

Add one more with the random shut down problem. All appears normal when making calls, but no connection and inbound calls go straight to Voicemail. This happens several times a day. I tried the new Sim card route, but that had no affect on the problem.

Come on Apple - give us a fix

    Funny Monty..

Restore as new, wiped clean. Brand new install. Still locks up. Apple Frikin Genius says "no hardware problem". They escalated up the chain (so they said)

    Update as follows ...

I had the shutdowns with 3.0.1 and my BT crapped out. I took the risk and upgraded to 3.1 and had no shutdowns for 3-4 days ... then bam, down it goes.

I have since turned off push notifications and the shutdowns have stopped. I also have it plugged in almost 24 hours each day:

    - in the car cradle
    - at my desk in a cradle
    - at home on the sync cable

    Since then, no more shutdowns.

    Try these and see ?

PS, the downside of the upgarde to 3.1 was:

    - music coming form the ipod was all garbled

    - now wont play at all

Lucky I dont need the iPod as much as the phone.

I dont want to upgrade to a new 3GS as it means I have to reset all phone settings.

Do I lose any statistics (ie, high scores) in the Game Apps if I reload to a new phone ?

OK, take it back. After working perfectly since Sunday, my iPhone crashed twice in the last 30mn. I've already lost 8+ hours because of this crap (trip to the Apple store + three full restores) and countless phone calls + messages. This is BS, I'm so furious right now!!
