Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I just got off the phone with Apple Support. Right before I called the agent informed me that they had a meeting and found a solution to the issue. Here is what happens, when you upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1 in some cases the software will corrupt a battery file on the phone. This file is what tells your phone how much battery is left. In the case that this file becomes corrupt, your phone thinks that it doesn't have any battery left. In order to fix this issue the agent had me preform the following steps.
    1. Power off the phone.
    2. Go into the iTunes preferences, devices, then check the box to prevent devices from syncing automatically.
    3. Connect the phone to your computer
    4. Hold the power and home button at the same time.
    5. Count to 10, then release the power button and continue to hold the home button.
    6. This will put your phone into restore mode.
    7. Once in restore mode you will be prompted to restore you phone
    8. Click this button and wait for the phone to restore.
    9. Once this completes, your phone will be completely restored from scratch.
    10. Then you can sync the phone from here and restore your settings, apps, and music

The agent also gave me his personal email in case the issue continues to exist. If it does I'll contact him for further details and keep everyone of the forum updated.

Hope this helps. Message me if it does/doesn't work

    Greetings,

I've never had a spontaneous shutdown of any kind, on my 3G, or my wife's 3Gs. In fact the phones have never given either of us any problems and are absolute jewels, as the first generation is.

This has become a bazar thread, and most of it is pretty ludicrous. It (the 3.1 software) was tested, throughly, and that I can attest to.

Apple cannot design for whatever trashy software and mishandling you might have done to the phone. Instead of complaining and whining here, people need to seek out an Apple store and work through it.

Most of these problems are self induced. If a complete restore, as new, doesn't do it, then you might have a faulty iPhone. Have it checked.

    Cheers,
    M.

I'm a pretty sophisticated user; I work in the tech industry and for a couple of years even wrote code that was in shrink-wrap packages on store shelves. Although there are probably a lot of things that are hardware or user related here, I can 100% vouch for the comas. Also, because of this I'm believing that the 3G issues (i.e. can't make or take calls) is most likely also true.

Either you are purpousefully trying to incite a 'riot' on this thread, or you think that your personal experiences are just so much more 'worthy' than the rest of us. Countless people are having the same problem, however we should have checked with you first to make sure that 'our' personal experiences matched your obviously superior and greater take on the issue.

Trevor - I attempted this before downgrading to 3.0.1 with no success. Good luck to you, though! Let us know how it goes.

I called Apple Care again today (for the 7th or 8th time) and finally the Genius that I talked to acknowledged that there are issues a lot of people are experiencing with 3.1. She transferred me right away to a Senior tech and he had me send him my iphone crash logs. He said the engineers were working hard to get this resolved ASAP and that it shouldn't be too much longer. He said that the more logs they get, the better though so I suggest we all send our logs.

He gave me his personal email address also, so it does look like apple is finally handling the situation.

I will. I'm going to give it 24 hours. When I was having the issue it happened at least once in 24 hours. I'll report back tomorrow evening with my results.

So I had my phone swapped out last Friday and it had worked fine until today. I really wish that Apple would figure out the problem and get it fixed.

    To Monty1945,

Your conclusion that it's "user error" or user fault would "hold water" IF it wasn't for the fact that many of the posters who've reported comatose phones made appointments with Apple to have their phones looked at & ultimately were given replacement phones only to download the updates & have the SAME THING HAPPEN AGAIN.......TO THE NEW PHONE!!!

You sound like an Apple spy! LOL

By the way, no offense to the guys that "appear" to be helping but is anyone else doing this www.redmondpie downgrade? Anyone notice the people who are posting this normally only have 3-5 posts?

I don't know, maybe after this 3.1 debacle I feel a little paranoid but it seems like to me it's being pushed a lot on this thread & being that they seem to come from Apple Discussion newbies I'm a little wary.

But like I said I could be a little paranoid.

I'm included in this group of troubled iphone users. My 16GB 3G goes into a coma once a day at least. Suffering along with all of you. Called Apple Care and they are still suggesting, backup, factory restore, then data restore or wait for a fix.

    Hope it gets resolved soon.

    Hello,

I know this is not a fix but might help you at least for not having the iPhone comatose. In my case if I change Preferences->General->Network->and disable 3G, the iPhone stops falling in deep sleep. You will have a slow network, but better than a coma. Please, let me know how it goes for you.

    Greetings

    ibroker,
I'm one of those newbies posting here. I suspect that like some of these newbies, I am fairly new to mac. (moved over from m_soft/windows). As another user who is having problems, I have been searching the internet for easy ways to downgrade. You seem to be be fairy experienced mac user abd poster, so could you suggest or post a straightforward way to downgrade. to 3.0.1. Then we wont have to try the www.redmondpie downgrade.

Look at my post above and try that. During the upgrade process to 3.1 a file got corrupted which tells your phone its battery status. Since it's corrupt your phone thinks it's out of battery even though it still is on. The fix above rebuilds the software with version 3.1

    My new special 3.1 enhancements:

Note 1 : To fix every problem except #1, you have to shut the phone off completely, and restart. then it works until you make or receive the next call. If this isn't fixed within days, I will have to switch networks. As rebooting my phone after every call is not an option.
Note 2 : I think this update was mostly a jealous sibling thing. iTunes and iPhone update to break Palm Pre syncing.

    1) Battery life went from 5 days to 5 hours. Phone shuts off after full charge do to dead battery.
    2) Most calls never get passed the "contacting" stage and reach connected.
    3) After making a call, my phone goes into pretend phone mode. This means it appears to be an iPhone, but it is really a paperweight. If you call it, the caller hears it ringing, goes to voicemail after 5 rings, etc. It is a magical equation whether this will or will not show up on my phone. Usually it does not. Which means I don't know who called, and I don't get their message. Does someone else?
    4) Visual voicemail is down 2/3 of the time.
    5) Full signal to searching for network to one bar to searching for network to full signal all while sitting in the same spot.

Definitely NOT installing the Snow Leopard Copy sitting on my desk until it is farther along.
