Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

    My new special 3.1 enhancements:

Note 1 : To fix every problem except #1, you have to shut the phone off completely, and restart. then it works until you make or receive the next call. If this isn't fixed within days, I will have to switch networks. As rebooting my phone after every call is not an option.
Note 2 : I think this update was mostly a jealous sibling thing. iTunes and iPhone update to break Palm Pre syncing.

    1) Battery life went from 5 days to 5 hours. Phone shuts off after full charge do to dead battery.
    2) Most calls never get passed the "contacting" stage and reach connected.
    3) After making a call, my phone goes into pretend phone mode. This means it appears to be an iPhone, but it is really a paperweight. If you call it, the caller hears it ringing, goes to voicemail after 5 rings, etc. It is a magical equation whether this will or will not show up on my phone. Usually it does not. Which means I don't know who called, and I don't get their message. Does someone else?
    4) Visual voicemail is down 2/3 of the time.
    5) Full signal to searching for network to one bar to searching for network to full signal all while sitting in the same spot.

Definitely NOT installing the Snow Leopard Copy sitting on my desk until it is farther along.

I don't mean to be repetitive, but again...Look at my post above. Try that. It's working for me for the past 6 hours. Before the fix, I'd have issues multiple times per day.

Ok, so i've had 6 or so lock ups, comma's whatever you want to call them a day, called apple and to their credit, the phone help was really great, got me an appointment in an apple store on standby where I was able to get in right away, and was told that I had a lose wire and this was causing the lock ups! I asked them how exactly doing a forced restart would temporarily fix this issue, and he kinda danced around it. So I'm thinking either when he went into the back room he did some sort of fix or who knows, maybe it's a coincidence that i was having "commas" and also happened to have a lose wire. Either way, i'm hoping I don't have this issue anymore.

I'm not sure if this is the root cause of the issue. 99 percent of the people who posted in the thread have the issue since the update to 3.1. I doubt that everyone in here has "loose wires". I think that was an easy excuse for the Apple store "Genius".

My thoughts exactly...like I said, to me they either have a fix and updated my phone somehow or maybe I got the brushoff. If my phone still has this issue, I will raise a stink about that as I took a decent chunk of my evening in rush our traffic during a business trip to not be taken seriously.

I'm doing the same even if my fix solves the problem. I missed multiple phone calls and text as well as alarms. Luckily I woke up at the same time my alarm was supposed to. Apple needs to give AT&T some money so they can cut us a break on our next monthly bill.

Not sure this is an ATT issue...seems to me it's OS involved.

I wasn't implying that. It's an Apple issue no doubt. But the best way for Apple to make customers happy is by fixing the problem and giving us a little bonus like some $$$ off our next bill.

Read my post on page 118. Not sure if this is 100% fix yet but I shall know in 24 hours or less and I will post my findings.

I don't know, maybe after this 3.1 debacle I feel a little paranoid but it seems like to me it's being pushed a lot on this thread & being that they seem to come from Apple Discussion newbies I'm a little wary.

But like I said I could be a little paranoid.

I unlocked a couple 'handmedown' phones when i upgraded so i was familar enough with the tools to do a downgrade to turn my phone back into a phone from the iPaperWeight 3.1.

I've had 3G since day one and had the 1st gen since the first price drop. I have just shy of perhaps 1100 HOURs on the odometer. i have about 30,000 keyboard hrs experience on computers, 25,000 or so of that mac. Just because i wasn't an active poster at apple discussions doesn't mean i don't know what i'm talkin' about.

It was a tedious but 'doable' thing to downgrade. it could be PAINLESS and apple could open the door tomorrow; a simple update in iTunes to 9.02 could allow at least certain serial number iPhones to downgrade to 3.0 (of course iTunes would have to stop erasing the 3.0 ipsw files!).

it would be nice if the 'theme' of this thread and the 10 or 15 others just here were combined into one forum at the least. The common element being in some way or another my iPhone 3.01 became iPaperWeight 3.1.

This is very very interesting. Today I went to the apple store in Glendale,CA to replace my 3G paper weight for the second time due to 3.1 coma mode syndrome. I overheard a "Genius Guy" tell exactly the same thing " +a wire is loose, I need to take it to the back room and it should only take 5 minutes+" to a lady that was next to me and she also was complaining about her phone doing weird things aka "Come Mode"

So I guess Apple has provided X-Ray vision to all Apple Geniuses, how can some tell a wire is loose with out opening the phone first.

ibroker - I assume I'm one of the newbies you're referring to. I'm a newbie because I have no other Apple products besides the iPhone. I've had my iPhone 3G for a little over a year, and have had very little reason to even visit these forums until version 3.1 was released. I suggested the redmondpie downgrade because it has turned my phone from paperweight back to phone. It ***** we are having to use this method, but it's a HE LL of a lot more than we've seen from Apple up to this point. I merely suggest it because it worked for me. Try it if you like, good luck regardless.

By the way, this is my 6th post - does that make you less paranoid?

Ya...like I said, sounds like they must have a "fix". Not sure why they won't post it for people if that is the case. Or, why they tell someone theres a loose wire..as if a hardware issue like loose wires is better than a software glitch?

Anyone else notice considerably better performance today? Just wondering if it's my imagination/temporary, but I went from 10+ comas a day and serious lags in memory for the last week + to golden today. Of course, I seriously considered not posting this in case it's some kind of jinx. Who knows, maybe it's Mercury coming out of retrograde jokes....maybe?

I didn't do a dang thing to it in the last 24 hrs except abuse it verbally, so I can't offer any sage words, but I DID update to iTunes 9.0 and sync the phone. So, yeah, I guess that's something, but it's related to the same something that got us all in this spot.

Would love to get others' updates on their situations.
