Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

The only fix is downgrading to 3.0. Trevor Bryant, I have been trying to help (since this is a support forum) but no one listens. I tried repeatedly to help, just like you, however I don't think anyone cares. Wait a minute, I did have one person that I was able to help. He downgraded to 3.0 and all the problems went away. I don't see any advantages from 3.0 to 3.1 anyhow. No one could say 3.1 enables MMS because it just would not be true. I have 3.0 and mms, whatever I'm just going on tangents now. I hope you have better luck helping people.

Everyone - if you are having this issue and your iPhone is still under warranty, go to the Apple store and get it replaced.
If your phone is still in warranty and you have not purchased AppleCare, I would recommend it. It extends your warranty for an additional year. I regret not doing so.

That's what I exactly did when I had to exchange my phone. The first time I wasn't aware of the 3.1 issues. I update to 3.1 and the problems started again the second day I even restored the phone several times as a new phone and nothing worked. This time my iPhone was doing the coma mode after it sync with the bluetooth on my car. Today I got another iPhone with 3.0.1 and I will keep it like that until apple comes with a fix for the coma mode, the only bad part is that I can't get the mms update until I update to 3.1

I am not sure if this will help but I had the same issues with my phone.
I went into control panel amde sure all files *were not hidden* and then went into my c drive chose my user file (HP Owner)
went into file: named application data
    went into file: apple computer
    went into file: iTunes
went into file: iPhone Software Updates and DELETED IT

Then I went into normal itunes after connecting my iPhone and started the download again but I had to restore my iPhone as a new phone. Problems went away after this. I am not sure if it will help others but it fixed mine after a fustrating few weeks with a dodgy phone.

Just downgrade to 3.0.1 -- you'll have MMS and your phone will work.

Apple should actually make it easier for us to downgrade so we can get away from their obviously broken firmware. I'm on the same boat. I had to on a daily basis power off my phone and back on just so I can receive phone calls or text messages.

Thanks Apple--you should just call your 3.1 upgrade the "Vista" upgrade.

In my case, I had no sleeping issue for almost a week, since I made a reset of the network parameters and since I desactivated the Push and Notifications functions. I also desactivate Wifi and 3G as often as possible. Now the battery lasts several days ! For me, the push system is not really usefull so I can live without it without frustration.

I'm one of the "Newbies" that you are referring to and I can assure you that my posts (this is the second) are genuine. I think what you have to accept is that not everyone is an iPhone geek and really these Forums hold no real interest to them. They just want their phone to work and if it does then life is wonderful. In this instance so many people are having problems with their iPhones that they're looking for assistance and what better way to get it than to go on to a Forum from the manufacturer's site. I do participate in car forums because that's what interests me and I'm well aware that these forums get Trolls from time to time (even seen a couple on this discussion), but I think that you would agree that the number of contributors to this thread from all over the world reporting problems after the 3.1 upgrade cannot be regarded as suspicious. There is obviously a problem with the software and I'm sure that Apple is burning the midnight oil trying to solve it. I'm new to Apple products and to me it looks like this company's policy is to say nothing until they have a fix (probably their lawyers idea) and we will all just have to wait until they come up with one. Like everyone else I hope that it's sooner rather than later.

Ok, so i've had 6 or so lock ups, comma's whatever you want to call them a day, called apple and to their credit, the phone help was really great, got me an appointment in an apple store on standby where I was able to get in right away, and was told that I had a lose wire and this was causing the lock ups! I asked them how exactly doing a forced restart would temporarily fix this issue, and he kinda danced around it. So I'm thinking either when he went into the back room he did some sort of fix or who knows, maybe it's a coincidence that i was having "commas" and also happened to have a lose wire. Either way, i'm hoping I don't have this issue anymore.

Loose wire that made me smile at least! The best root cause analysis of this problem so far, thousands of people suddenly have a loose wire during the 3.1 upgrade and this loose wire magically disappears when 3.0 is used? Maybe apple have invented virtual wiring, hopefully they can re-plumb the loose wire when 3.1.1 / 3.2 has been released!

Sorry its been one of the longest critical defects I have experienced on an apple product without a patch to fix, maybe Mr iphone developer is away on vacation? Myself another 2 incidents today so far, maybe should stop using shake to shuffle to prevent that loose wire moving...

The resolution of the coma issue is simple: Apple only has to rename 3.0.1 to 3.1.1 and re-offer it as an update through iTunes. Than, in a couple of following weeks, Apple can correct suspect 3.1 and rename it to 3.1.2 or 3.2. Its as simple as that.

I'm not new to Apple, my father bought our first Apple computer before they were macs (Apple II) i've had pretty much every model either at work or at home.I even owned a Newton (Apple's pre-palm handheld organizer). I bought the iPhone 1 the day it was released in France, ditto for the 3G. I'm a photographer, i use Macs and PCs (when they work and if i must). I just do not understand Apple's stubbornness about this issue. There OBVIOUSLY is a problem with the new firmware. The freezes and shutdowns linked or not to rapid battery depletion are very real. So dear Apple guys, please DO SOMETHING constructive, if you think that admitting there is a problem will make you look bad, look where you are now and think again. I realize that reverting to fw 3.0.1 may not be as technically easy as it may seem. FYI i chose to get a 3GS as a workaround (i have faith ). The battery life is low but it doesn't get freezes and shutdowns. I still have the 3G and i look forward to hearing of a real solution from Apple, i will then be able to pass it to my girlfriend as i promised.

    Same bugs as everyone:
    1) random shutdowns up to 4 or 5 times per day
    2) incoming calls not received
    3) slower apps...with no response to touchscreen

I am really annoyed..I hope they fix it soon because I am really considering going back to Nokia and Symbian...

Mr. Big J, Sorry if I missed it, but do you have step-by-step instructions to downgrade to 3.0? Thanks.

I also suffer with the shutdowns when the phone locks. Happens about 3-4 times per day for me. Really hope they can fix this soon, as it obviously is a major bug that renders the phone inoperable until you reboot (which takes a couple of minutes anyway).

What an incredible pompous jerk you are. Apple has admitted to a 1% failure rate, which is probably an underestimate. I had a phone that worked, installed 3.1, then it didn't. How is that my fault?
