Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I am having the same problem as well. It has even locked up during an email retreaval. As with everyone else, a hard reboot brings it back, but I have had to hard reboot 4 times since upgrading. Is there a patch available?

OK - the phone doesn't completely shut down during a lock-up. My 3G locked-up again, black screen and the buttons seemed unresponsive. I resisted a hard reset as I could hear the buzz through the headphones suggesting the OS was still operating on some level. I tried holding down the home key as that is known to kill any active background threads; that didn't work.

What did, and I don't know if it was a coincidence of timing, is taking a screen capture. I was able to photograph the black screen! The phone screen then "flashed" and the phone returned to normal behaviour.

I've also started encountering this problem - at least 4 times in 2 days. Tried various things to "wake it up" including calling the phone, texting it, hitting various buttons - nothing seems to work. I just saw the post about taking a picture of the screen - I'll try that next time it happens.
Apple has 3 whole pieces of hardware to target and test! And this is the best they can do? Meanwhile Steve won't open up development without Apple approval because OTHER people will make the phone unstable?!? Pfffft. I have an iphone, a Mac, and a few pc's - but I swear Apple's making Microsoft look better every day.

After a lot of frustration, I finally completed the Restore to New Phone that's been recommended by several people and ... same problems. The screen locks each and every time I use Mail, or Calendar or whatever. I have to do a hard reset to get back to the home screen -- or to make a phone call.

And at this point, I have NO photos loaded, NO music/movies/videos, NO apps other than the ones that originally come with a new iPhone -- and still it won't work.

Bump. This is a big deal.

Just wanted to jump in and say I'm having the same problem. I don't have a MobileMe account, so it's not that.

I got the same issue with my old 3g. I also had the instant power drain. I went to the apple store and they gave me a new 8 gig 3g. When the genius guy tested it he said there was a hardware failure. I'm still having the random black screen deep freez issue on the new 3G. Please fix apple.

    Replying to myself:

It's been over 24 hours with no issues so far. I am pleased. I will continue to post my ongoing successes (or when they occur, failures). I hope everyone's issues get resolved.

    In response to:

    "
I had the same problem. Had no issues for a whole day, then the next day I got the problem you read about in this thread. I was wondered if maybe the file iTunes had downloaded was corrupted so I downloaded a .ipsw I read about in this thread:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9942918&#9942918

    I haven't had a issue so far. "

    Me too!!

My iphone randomly vibrates or chirps (as if I received e-mail) when locked and not being used. When trying to unlock the phone, it is unresponsive. Force rebooting revives it but I also noticed that pressing the power and home buttons simultaneously will trigger a screen shot. Moments later, the phone becomes responsive again.

Well I spoke too soon. My phone just turned itself off again and would not respond to anything I tried. I had to do another hard reboot in order to get it turned back on. Come on Apple, fix this already!
