Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Going on 4 hours now with the audiobook playing in the background (volume off). The phone has not crashed yet. Cross your fingers.

ok talk about a 'big duh'. but follow this hyperlink:

    http://sanjose.bbb.org/ComplaintDetail.aspx?CompanyID=198239

I used 'General Service Issues' even though cust. service would be about as appropriate

the email they sent me didn't include the original summary but was something like this:

Defective iPhone 3.1 Operating System with Restore to working version DISABLED

maybe there really isn't enough of an official 'squeak' in the wheel.

if suddenly the bbb gets 100 or 1000 reports of the same problem, there may be some action. If not, there will be 1000 unresolved bad reports at bbb.

The following grid displays the number and responses to complaints over the last 36 months:
No. of Cmpl Type of Response
22 Making a full refund, as the consumer requested
    3 Making a partial refund
727 Agreeing to perform according to their contract
4 Refusing to make an adjustment
450 Refuse to adjust, relying on terms of agreement
    0 Unanswered
    316 Unassigned

if you file a report you can sign up for trustlink and submit a review there; only ONE review so far:

    Resolution Sought:
Apple should IMMEDIATELY reverse the new policy that cripples the ability to restore to a 'last known good state' (in this case it would be 3.0 or 3.01 operating system). so we can restore our phones to working order while they work on the NEXT OS. Talk about simply being FAIR!

Apple should IMMEDIATELY make a NATIONAL press release acknowledging the ERROR

Well, I've given up. It's been almost a month now that I've been paying for a non-working phone. So I went to the AT&T store and bought an iPhone 3Gs.

I've tried all the suggestions listed here. Even rolling back to 3.0.1 still caused my phone to go into comas. Maybe when Apple finally acknowledges the problem and issues a fix I'll donate my phone to someone. Until then I'm not going to wish these problems on anyone else.

Hmm. So far, after my trip to the Apple store and being told a "loose wire" caused my commas, I have not had one all day after having about 6 a day. I do believe that they have a fix and I did not have a loose wire. Still crossing my fingers as it's been less than 24 hours.

i have been to the Apple Store twice with my iPhone no longer working. first time, i went home and did a reset of my iPhone. problem continued. i went back and they flashed a ROM update to my iPhone and told me to keep it clean and not restore the old content. so, in essence, i was told i couldn't have my high scores or settings on any application i've bought. well, this didn't work either as today i missed 4 calls while i wasn't even aware that my iPhone had stopped working yet again. completely clean system and the problem persisted. they told me to keep it on the EDGE network because 3G might be causing the issue. in other words, i am paying for 3G and being told to use EDGE. and they won't give me a new iPhone because their engineers are working on a solution . . . all the while i am missing calls and now using EDGE while paying for an iPhone 3G. i am headed back tomorrow and asking for a refund for the time i've had this problem or a new iPhone.

I think that's a good idea to ask for a refund for time "unable to be used" (doubt you'll get it though). I mean a lot of us didn't know until a day before or even the day of going from the original iPhone to the 3g that AT&T would add a surcharge of $10 per/mo just to switch to 3G. Now that 3G isn't working for a lot of us should we get a credit for every month we go without a fix?

I think $10 for every month that this fix hasn't been issued is fair. Charge this back to AT&T & see if they don't jump on Apple's arse to fix this this mess a little more quickly.

Really, every company/product has issues at some point. To me, it's not that there is this issue, but rather no statement from Apple about this issue. All it would require is someone from the company to post right here that they are aware of the problem, that they are sorry for the inconvenience, and for anybody who needs help they would be willing to provide any workarounds that they can in the meantime.

Just got off the phone with a higher-echelon iPhone tech support guy who told me the following things:

    *It's not a hardware problem.
*The engineers are aware of it.
*Higher-tier support people have been collecting logs, but engineering now has enough and they have stopped collecting logs.

I told him that I am testing out a new method to keep my phone alive: keep an audiobook running with the volume all the way down. Yesterday I had 12 shutdowns, today since noon (when I started playing the audiobook) I have had none. I should have had two at least. Crossing my fingers!

I have his direct contact info and have promised to keep him updated with my testing.

this is NOT the best fix, but it has kept my phone from coma for 20 minutes which is a new record.

I'm so sick of not knowing when my iPhone is working and when it is not working. I'm unaware that I'm missing calls and text until people call my wife's phone to try and reach me. Basically I have a iPhone thats a phone 25% of the time and a iPhone thats nothing more than a iPod touch the other 75% of the time. Someone should be held responsible for all this money people are paying so that they can have a phone and 3g browsing. Is it going to take someone dying because they could not call emergency serices because there iPhone was not doing its main function, (what everyone is payong for a phone) before Apple swallows there pride and admits that they screwed up there is a problem with the iPhone and fix it ASAP or let us downgrade to 3.0.1 firware?

"It Just Work" -What a load of BS!

    Trevor Bryant,
Tried your suggestion, and wanted to let you know that it has helped, but not fixed the problem.
Have had one freeze/shutdown in the past 24 hours. (was having about 10 per day prior to that). At least the phone is more usable now, but still eagerly awaiting the new update (or simple instructions on downgrading to 3.0.1)

Trevor Bryant wrote:I haven't had any issues in the last 24 hours since I did the restore following my instructions on page 118. Again...the issue is the software conversion while upgrading from 3.0 to 3.1, in the process a file gets corrupt. If you follow my instructions, it restores your phone from scratch using the 3.1 software. For all of the people who are exchanging their phones, they keep having the same issue because their new phones have 3.0 software on them and when the upgrade to 3.1 the file gets corrupt again. I'm in a small group of people who Apple support is testing this fix with. I'm supposed to contact a specific Apple support tech today. Since I haven't had any issues I think Apple will start notifying more users of the fix.

I am glad that you have not had any issues. But I could tell you that I have tried your method. I deleted the 3.1 ipsw restore file in the iTunes folder and downloaded a fresh copy, then I did a clean restore. I never reused my backup. All this to no avail. I am not saying that your fix is not worth trying, it just didn't work for me. What I was really trying to point out is that no one listens.

What I did learn from this, is to never do any major upgrades right away. Which I hardly ever do, still waiting for Snow Leopard to work out its major bugs before I upgrade to that. Have a good one.

Well I just got back from my Genius Bar appointment in the Chandler Fashion Center location. The young man there stated that he was sure my intermittent connectivity was caused by a bad SIM card. I had AT&T swap it out. I suppose we will see what happens. If it locks up again, I will be displeased (further...).
