Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Tried your suggestion, and wanted to let you know that it has helped, but not fixed the problem.
Have had one freeze/shutdown in the past 24 hours. (was having about 10 per day prior to that). At least the phone is more usable now, but still eagerly awaiting the new update (or simple instructions on downgrading to 3.0.1)

Unfortunately there is not any easy instructions to downgrade to 3.0.1 if you are a Mac owner. However you have a Windows running in a virtual environment then its much easier. Here follow this link if you have access to a windows box.

I do believe you have to download the 3.0.1 ipsw firmware from a different source other than what the link provides. Try ismashphone.com, those guys are great. Hope this helps.

Does anyone know if you downgrade like its says here will you loose all your contacts?

Yes you will lose your contacts rolling back to 3.0.1. That you should back up your contacts too your address book (if your on a Mac) or to google.

It's been 8 hours with NO COMA! Audio book is still running. I think this works. I would have had one or two an hour all day but I have a good feeling about this temporary method.

full restore erases everything on the phone; you must sync to a computer or m.me beforehand; once re-installing the OS a sync afterwards will put all the data back on.

caveat: when i went from 3.1 to 3.01; some of my applications internal settings (eg high scores) were reset!

Ok people my girls iPhone haven't had any comas for *4 days* now.
    _Here is what I did,_
+turned off+ WiFi and 3G(she turns 3G on only when she needs it, browsing, utube or email. WiFi *stays off* all the time)

_deleted some application that she didn't use,_
air hockey, skype, bubble wrap and 2 speedtest app( can't remember their names)

    _I went to setting/safari_
    turned off Fraud Warning

4 days no problems *try it*.

Well, the replacement SIM card idea is full of fail. Phone just locked up, 'Unable to Activate Cellular Data Network'. Display indicates that there is a full strength 3G signal. Guess it is back to the Apple Store. This ought to be fun...

So you want people to use their iPhones with limited capabilities. I paid good money for the use of 3G, as matter of fact I pay a monthly fee to use 3G. And I would like to use all the apps I pay for along with the free ones.

I am sorry SleepyX but I paid and pay good money to use all my services. I refuse to set restrictions on my iPhone. There needs to be a better solution. Oh yeah 3.0.1.

Add me and my wife to the list of people affected by the random shut downs after updating to 3.1.

    Here are my other complaints/requests.

    Glitches in iPhone OS 3.1

    1. When listening to podcasts at 2x speed, if there are multiple tracks time will be added to all but the first track.
    2. Also if an alarm goes off during 2x play, when the podcast resumes it is set back about 50% of the time elapsed.
    3. Huge slow downs even after restarts. Lagging keyboard, lock slider not responding, other speed lags : (
    4. Phone seems to just totally shut down randomly and I have to hold the hold and home buttons for over 5 seconds...

Feature requests for 3.2 (or later)

    1. Radio profiles (driving: no 3g, no edge, no gps, Bluetooth on. Work: ... Meeting: ... Custom: ...)
    2. Ability to group contacts from phone
    3. Custom text message tones in GarageBand.
    4. Seperate tones for messages, VM, mail.
    5. Create custom VM greeting in GarageBand.
    6. Multiple saved VM greetings.
    7. Asign seperate VM greeting for different groups and default.
    8. Move pictures between folders
    9. Create photo folders
    10. Multiple pages in maps
    11. Multiple destinations in maps
    12. Volume button becomes shutter button when camera app is opened (unless on a call, then it stays volume)

Love love love my iPhone. Keep up the magical work.

    Thanks Apple!

And please please please make the apple.com website iPhone safari friendly. Please. It loads So slow.

I am experiencing the same symptoms on my 3G after 3.1 update. I'm new to Apple. I have to say I expected much more. Apple might me gaining market share, but from what I've seen so far, they are just playing at it. I walked into their store and wrote a check for $600 for this phone. That was 14 months ago. I can watch movies on it, but I need a phone. I'll pick up a cheap Nokia until they come up with a fix. As a phone this thing is nearly worthless, since 3.1.

Apple tech support suggested I pick up a cheap phone to get me through. I suggest Apple buy us all one.

As per my previous post my problems went away when I turned off absolutely everything except basic phone functions. No problems after 5 days of use. I then turned things back on one at a time and found that 3G made my problems return (comas, no service etc). The phone is now operating for over 3 days with 3G turned off but no other problems and great battery life.

If you haven't tried already, turn off everything except the basic phone, do a DFU and fully charge with the phone turned off. See if the phone works as a basic phone and if or when you are confident try turning other functions on one at a time. If your lucky you will at least have a phone again until Apple find a solution.

    For me deleting iTunes
    restarting computer
    reinstalling iTunes
    restoring iPhone as new phone
    syncing apps back

had a few coma states for a day but then it's been ok for 3 days.

    Fingers crossed....

(Just in case i also don't use Genius on Itunes i dont need it).
