Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

    For me deleting iTunes
    restarting computer
    reinstalling iTunes
    restoring iPhone as new phone
    syncing apps back

had a few coma states for a day but then it's been ok for 3 days.

    Fingers crossed....

spoke too soon. After canceling my 'genius' appointment and posting this 5 mins later coma again!!!

Personally I see no reason to do complete re-installations and restores. I did one and it did not help, just the same as it did not help many others on this thread.

I would recommend Apple to rename 3.0.1. to 3.1.1 and have it distributed forthwith through iTunes as usual.

I totally fail to see why Apple is heaving so many people struggle with the coma issue whilst a simple downgrade (if thats what you want to call it) would do the trick; I am pretty sure of that.

3.0.1 was running so fine, now I regret with every hair on my head I have been such an early adaptor of 3.1. as it is completely useless. My iPhone turned into a zombie, a useless piece of high tech crap.

Needles to say I am flabbergasted and very angry about the complete lack of response, left alone actions from Apple. An attitude thats killing if they would wanna operate in the business market and very bad PR for the consumer market. What the heck are they taking us for? Are we to be respected as a customer? I would say yes, but Apple does not at all recognize that and thats a disgrace. I am getting furious about it!

Apple YOU GOT to announce a scheduled release date for 3.1.1 or 3.2. !!!!!!! You just got to give your customers some kind of outlook!

Somewhere in this thread someone suggested two things that have worked for me. No lockups for over 4 four days.

    1. Turn off notifications in settings.
    2. Reset settings without deleting data (General -> Reset All Settings)

That is all I did and it works.

Here are other issues I've been experiencing besides the multiple random shutdowns since installing 3.1...

Autobrightness works about 1/2 the time

When I play songs, about 75% of the time now the song stops and it goes into "shuffle" mode...and, that's with keeping shuffle mode off. I can't even listen to a song all the way through since it stops it and shuffles to another song and tries to keep shuffle on. So, now this iBrick is even worthless as an iPod.

In my photo library I have about a half dozen pix of the iPhone home screen. What's up with that? Also, about half the time it won't let me scroll (flipping through with my finger) through my photos.

I'm getting "No Service" MUCH more frequently now. It seems to frequently have problems finding the network. And, these are in the same areas I haven't had ANY issues getting a signal in.

I've turned off 3G, but that still hasn't completely stopped the shutdowns.
I've also turned off Notifications, but that hasn't helped either.

This really is frustrating and a simple note on this board from Apple would go a long way to appease me and the others posting and viewing here.

Hey RUQRU, I tried the same thing and it was fine for 4-5 days and then it came back with a vengeance.

No resetting DOES NOT WORK. At least; not for me. It got worse! Now its completely dead. My apps are completely mixed up same on iTunes so I will have to rearrange that by manually.... thanks for the tip

I am fed up trying and trying and meanwhile Apple does not announce anything!

I am gonna get my retired SonyEricsson back on duty. If Apple does not come up with a fixed OS somewhere next week I am gonna dump my iPhone in one of the Amsterdam canals, make a movie of it and put it on YouTube. Cant cope with this crap anymore.

I am experiencing problems with the random freezes (2-3 since the update) and the battery indicator seems to be hinky now.

After skimming these posts I can say this- I don't use wi-fi or MobileMe but I turned off calendar syncing just in case and MMS messaging. Keeping wi-fi searching on drains the battery faster, that's why I've never used it.

This update added MMS messaging and the fact that people have noted that AT&T is missing after the phone wakes up makes me think we're looking at a network issue. Maybe if we try turning off anything that makes the phone access the network on it's own and then turn them back on one at a time, together we can isolate the problem. Until the problem can be isolated, Apple can't fix it.

I have no clues about the sudden battery draining, except that it's probably not actually the battery but the software that tells you (and the phone) how much battery life is remaining. Sometimes these things get bugs. It happened to my MacBook before and I suspect that will be fixed soon enough. Meantime it's really annoying.

Not that it will help much for the big problem but these two are easy.

The "capture screen" command (equivalent of cmd-shft-3 on mac) is to press both home and sleep momentarilly. Coincidentally the reset command is to do the same but keep holding.

The shuffle i'm betting you have the "shake to shuffle" enabled. (I haven't looked but there had darn well be a setting to turn that OFF!)

+1. MY PHONE FELL INTO A "COMA" AGAIN NOW. This situation is ridiculous. It´s unbelievable. I feel like throw this phone at the door of apple to see if they learn to respect their customers. The behavior adopted by the company about this is shameful and negligible...More than three weeks without a word on this subject... R I D I C U L O U S.

andrewwynn...thanks for info! Very helpful. Indeed, I had "Shake to Shuffle" enabled, so just turned it off. Glad that was easy.

Obviously after 1,200 posts in this thread alone, Cupertino isn't doing enough to fix the problem, my advice is to box up your iPhones and pack them in crap and send them back to Apple in protest. That will get their attention.

Yeah, 3.1 *****. I stayed away from it myself. Here's what I'd do.

    1. Disable Fraud Warning and Notifications (if you can live without) then reset network settings on the phone.
    2. DFU mode restore 3.1 to see if it'll take better second time around.
    3. DFU mode downgrade firmware and wait for apple to fix whatever is wrong.

all this I got from google searching, if you need further info I'd go there.
