Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Apple is creating a legion of newbie hackers, willing to try anything to get their iPhones working correctly again, since they may be out of warranty coverage. I "self downgraded" to 3.0.1, "self updated" carrier to AT&T 6.0, (for working MMS and internet tethering.) Yesterday "self jb'd" 3.0.1 with redsnow 0.8, much more functionality with the jb. Thanks for nothing Apple!

Well I went into the Apple Store in Chandler Mall this morning. They replaced the hardware. I indicated that I would be much more comfortable on a 3Gs, which do not seem to be displaying these kinds of behaviors. They didn't want to deal and I have no good reason to renew a contract with AT&T.

If this hardware exhibits the same issues, I am going to push for a refund of the phone and move on to Google pastures. They have refused to acknowledge the problem exists and have no idea when a patch for the botched 3.1 firmware will be released. I am growing displeased with their apparent lack of progress.

My Blackberry Storm worked better than the iPhone with OS 3.1. Now that's saying something. Where I work, this issue would have been ESCALATED a long time ago and people would have been forced into 24/7 with constant and continual communications with the customer. Even though I am one that was able to 'downgrade' back to 3.0.1 and my phone works, my loyalty to the platform is gone.

TEMPORARY solution(until apple updates 3.1): turn OFF wifi. Everything else ON. It has worked for me for 2 days. Not a single problem. I only had laggs when I turned WIFI on, so I just turned it off and the iphone too. Please someone tell me If that works for all iphones. I'd like to know if everyone's problem can be solved in the same way.

Well, I'm on my 3rd full day switching off 3G & reverting back to Edge now & no problems. Everything working albeit it a bit slower than 3g but to be honest I didn't think 3g was all that blazing fast anyway!

At least I don't have any missed phone calls, I can text people & if I really need to use Safari it's up & usable.

At this point I think Apple owes it's customers at least 1/2 of what it costed to get on 3g. My AT&T contract was bumped up $10 extra bucks a month just to switch from Edge to 3G so I figure what's fair is 1/2 of that deducted from my next billing cycle, so $5.00 off? Yeah right like that's going to happen!! LOL

The best solution by now for me is to downgrade to 3.0

here is the solution if you use a Mac

I use an iphone 3G 8GB... and it is OFICIAL UNLOCKED

ok talk about a 'big duh'. but follow this hyperlink:

I used 'General Service Issues' even though cust. service would be about as appropriate

the email they sent me didn't include the original summary but was something like this:

Defective iPhone 3.1 Operating System with Restore to working version DISABLED

maybe there really isn't enough of an official 'squeak' in the wheel.

if suddenly the bbb gets 100 or 1000 reports of the same problem, there may be some action. If not, there will be 1000 unresolved bad reports at bbb.

The following grid displays the number and responses to complaints over the last 36 months:
No. of Cmpl Type of Response
22 Making a full refund, as the consumer requested
    3 Making a partial refund
727 Agreeing to perform according to their contract
4 Refusing to make an adjustment
450 Refuse to adjust, relying on terms of agreement
    0 Unanswered
    316 Unassigned

if you file a report you can sign up for trustlink and submit a review there; only ONE review so far:

    Resolution Sought:
Apple should IMMEDIATELY reverse the new policy that cripples the ability to restore to a 'last known good state' (in this case it would be 3.0 or 3.01 operating system). so we can restore our phones to working order while they work on the NEXT OS. Talk about simply being FAIR!

Apple should IMMEDIATELY make a NATIONAL press release acknowledging the ERROR

    -awr

I think we all should file a complain with the BBB using the link that was provided by andrewwynn, maybe this will make Apple acknowledge that there is a problem with 3.1. I am tired of going to the Genius Bar and getting lame excuses, like you are having issues because you use a case to protect the phone, go to AT&T and get a new sim card.

Same case here. Iphone 3G w/ 3.1 on it freezes at random. Did not experience this prior to the update.

We need a fix for this soon - not being able to receive calls because its bricked is simply not satisfactory; and one cannot be expected to check ones iPhone every 5 minutes to see if it needs a reset.

andrewwynn...thanks for info! Very helpful. Indeed, I had "Shake to Shuffle" enabled, so just turned it off. Glad that was easy.

How nice to have a glimmer of help in the ocean of helpless. I've been doing computer helpdesk for just about 30 years now, always nice to have an answer handy.

If I downgrade to version 3.0, will my warranty be voided? isn't this considered a hack?
