Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Apple rather creates a legion of displeased customers. Tried to downgrade to 3.0.1 but iTunes refused. I give up. Currently restoring (2nd time now in one week). I expect nothing anymore. As my contract is finished its goodbye Apple. Never experienced such a strong example of customer disrespect. It is simply disgusting and I refuse to accept it: its exit iPhone for me. Let Apple walk to ****.

Adding my name and info to the list also:
I have the iPhone 3g and all was fine after upgrading to 3.1 from 3.0.1 for a couple of weeks but yesterday and today (about this same time) my phone gets warm to the touch and does not respond to shutdown/power on, just sits at a black screen. It seemed to me as though some process was running that made it warm/hot but did not allow interruptions so I couldn’t wake it from the process. Yesterday it took a few hours of trying to force a shutdown before it actually responded, plugging in to power, unplugging power didn't seem to change things but today it responded rather quickly, I think I caught it not to far in to this blackout mode it got in to. Up until the 3.1 update I didn't have anything like this happen.

I've been getting this over the last couple of weeks wince upgrading to 3.1 as well. I reckon it's happened 2-3 times a week so far.

Reset has always worked to get the phone working again.

I have had a total shutdown since upgrading this morning. I can't turn on the phone to access Settings, and my computer doesn't recognise the device because of the malfunction, so I can't access Restore Settings through Itunes. Any suggestions?? In plainspeak please...

Adding my name to the list.

Same problems. And I would note that I normally keep 3g and WIFI off for battery life and I still get the coma.

Also get the nonsensical no service.

Apple is really falling off. I had to wait 3 months to buy my macbook pro because of the problems with the 7200rpm drives, now this.

    Just to update everyone:

I'm playing an audiobook with the volume all the way down to see if it halts the coma. Since noon yesterday (28 hours) I have had ZERO comas. The book plays all day and all night. So far, it seems to work.

It has happened to me 4 times in a week already, it you wait it can take up to 3-4 minutes to come back, so a hard reset is the best thing to do, hope they release a bug fix soon

In the meantime we pay extra for 3G service - First it was At&T now Apple - - Just keep denying there is a problem. Maybe if you say it enough it will make it so!

I couldn't handle the random shut-downs any longer so I downgraded to 3.0 then up to 3.01 using the instructions here
    http://www.benm.at/tutorials/howto-iphone-3g-firmware-3-1-downgrade-os-x/

His instruction say to go to 3.0 which I did then I upgraded to 3.0.1. I had to re enter the terminal commands for the update to 3.0.1. Maybe you can just go straight to 3.0.1

No more random shut downs, although in the process I lost all my messages, photos and settings as the iTunes back up of 3.1 was not compatible with 3.0

Hope this helps, although we all know Apple should just release a new update that fixes it!

Have had the same problem on both mine any my wife's phone. Have been to apple care/support multiple times. At least they are always nice. Have reloaded all software, replaced sim card, and today they shipped me 2 new i-phones. Within 3 hours of restoring all old data to the new phones and reloading 3.1, both phones froze. By this I mean, all 3G/E connectivity is lost; iTunes and non-internet apps still work fine. As with everyone else, a hard reset temporarily brings the phone back. Also battery is draining very fast. Before I upgraded, never had a single problem. Anyone with any solutions??? Please!

I just got back from the Apple store in the University District in Seattle. My iPhone 3G had been locking and battery was draining consistent with what everyone else has been reporting.

The Apple "genius" said that people have been coming in for weeks with the same problem. He acknowledged that there was a big problem with the 3.1 upgrade and that the way to fix it was for them to do a "low level firmware" reinstall. It took them about 30 mins to do the reinstall (could have been because there was a line of people waiting for the same thing to be done for their phones).

Since the reinstall my phone seems to be fine. It's total B.S. that Apple isn't publicly acknowledging this catastrophy.

At least they didn't give you a lame excuse like there is a lose wire and I need to take it to the back room to fix it.

My phone is on 3.1 - I was getting coma's once in awhile. I thought it had something to do with my phone being in my pocket. It had worked fine five minutes before. That was till last night when the phone appeared near death. It would work for ten minutes then freeze. The hard reboot took longer and longer. I had 3g off as I live in a place with no 3g I had a friend callme to see if it would wake up. Call went straight to voice mail. It doesn't appear to matter if I put the phone to sleep or use auto lock. Coma's occur. I noticed my wifi has a short time to live. I have to renew lease often. Every second page on this board. I am hoping there is a 3.2 soon or I may have to reactvate my razor for emergecy phone calls. I don't have the tome to figure out if it is a three minute coma vs a nine minute coma. As for the people saying the work around works, get over it. A dead watch is right twice a day. That doesn't mean it is fixed. Does a rape or murder have to occur because of a coma'd iPhone before the problem will be fixed? This is a mac afterall and not a sluggish PC
