Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I've gone over a week and a half without a coma! I turned off the fraud warning did a hard restart and went 2 days before a coma then the next day a coma and now it's been one and a half weeks without a problem.

I think you're on to something, I turned off all notifications and no hang up for 2 days now. Have eBay, Sportacular, CNN and AIM apps installed that send notifications. One lockup seems to have occured while Sportacular was sending a score notification.

I am having exactly the same problem as described by others here. My 3.1 update didn't go well (crashed mid-way, needed to backup and restore), and now it crashes randomly - total lock-up, needs a hard reset each time. Probably happens about once a day.

Unamused ... for such a closed hardware and software ecosystem, this looks like a major QC failure.

I disable 3G, wireless. Put email to manual, uninstall all apps, turn off the phone, then it doesn't have a problem with waking up.

wait a minute, turn off the phone?

Sorry, pretty much anything I try fails to stop the dreaded coma.

Just to add myself to the list affected by this issue.

I upgraded to 3.1 and within 10 minutes of the upgrade my phone just went blank. It happens approximately 3/4 times a day (every day since the upgrade to 3.1)

I'm looking forward to a solution from Apple soon.

Try the following: * Power off the iPhone as normal * Remove the SIM card * Power on the iPhone * Use the phone (unlock it, Play about for a bit with it saying ‘No SIM’) * Power off the iPhone as normal * Re-insert the SIM * Power on the iPhone * See what happens.

worth a shot, takes very little effort. I'm running 3.01 so can't test it.

A friend of mine who is a surgeon had a random shutdown during an emergency the other day when he was on-call. They could not get hold of him.

This "coma" issue will soon have grave consequences for someone who may need the phone to work to save a life...

After so much of struggle with the random coma, I found a solution at http://www.benm.at/tutorials/howto-iphone-3g-firmware-3-1-downgrade-os-x

Now, I am back to 3.0.1.

My phone contract runs for another 4 months and after that its "bye-bye apple"

My 10 year old son had emergency surgery earlier this week. My wife frantically tried to contact me for TWO HOURS to let me know what was going on while I was unaware that my iPhone had yet again gone comatose on me.

The fact that my phone was ringing out as opposed to providing the usual "The mobile you are calling is switched off or not in a mobile service area" message we get here in Australia compounded the issue for her as she thought I was just ignoring her calls.

When I realised it was in a coma and performed a reset my iPhone didn't list that there were any missed calls. The first notification I had that anything was wrong was the dozen sms's from her that came through almost immediately after the reset telling me something was wrong with my son.

I tried calling her as soon as I knew what was wrong but by that time she had her phone switched off due to being in the emergency ward at the hospital. Eventually she managed to contact me but not before I had a very stressful hour trying to locate her and continuously checking my phone to make sure it didn't go back into a coma again.

I don't consider what happened to my son (he's ok now by the way) to be any fault of Apple. I fully take responsibility for my knowledge that the phone was playing up, I've posted here before about it. I was willing to deal with it because my iPhone is so indispensable to me and the crashes were relatively infrequent (a couple of times a day since a reinstall). But this reminded me how important a working phone actually is so my solution is now to use my spare Nokia. It's a phone that acts as a phone and actually lets you know when someone is trying to call you. You know, like phones are supposed to do.

I'd like Apple to just admit there's a problem, hearing them say "We're aware of it and working on it" is all I want. The deafening silence smacks of an arrogant disregard of the concept of customer service. I'll keep an eye out and when I see an update that fixes this problem I'll bring my iPhone back online. But will I trust it? That's going to take some time... It'll be months before I'll be able to look at my iPhone and press the sleep button without holding my breath hoping it works.

There is a thread about this over on Reddit. I wonder what it will take before Apple says something publicly about this?
