Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I just upgraded from 3.0.1 to 3.1 night before last and it's been a nightmare ever since. Random shut offs several times a day. Slow when it does work. Very disappointed.

I'm have had the coma mode twice now, *very frustrating*, and *very disappointing*.

It was sort of Wifi related, both times. And since only the 3G seems to be affected.
I'm almost certain the problem is in the new baseband in the 3.1 update.

Curious, after Appple store "fixed your loose wire" have you noticed a different version number installed or a different modem firmware number installed? I personally suspect the modem firmware which Apple updated in 3.1 to prevent unlocking.

Not that we need another person confirming this but my daughter's 3G is doing the same 2 or 3 times a day. Apple Genius restored the iPhone 3G and it is worse than ever. Clearly they don't have a fix, but the Apple Genius seemed to want to gloss over the issue. I assume because they don't have a fix. I told them I was worried that there didn't seem to be a "paper trail" on this and I told him I was worried about this problem outliving my warranty. He gave me no answer to this.

I plan to speak with the manager of the Apple Store and at least make a record of the problem. I could buy Apple Care on the phone, but this seems to be a poor investment considering they can't fix the problem.

Oddly, when my friend bought his 3Gs they (Apple Store) switched out his phone twice when he was having battery/coverage issues. It would seem that for 3G owners the honey moon is well over

I have a spare 3G (my former phone), but unfortunately I upgraded it to 3.1. So switching a SIM card out doesn't seem to be a solution here.

Having an unreliable Internet device is one thing, but having an unreliable phone is really a huge personal security issue. Many people buy cell phones so that they can call for help or assistance. As a father I find it re-assuring that I can contact my daughter when she is on the road or traveling late at night. When basic phone functions are unreliable this takes that security away.

Apple's failure to acknowledge the problem does much to hurt customer relations and customer loyalty. I suppose it is a PR thing not to acknowledge a widespread issue until you have a solution.

I've purchased a total of four iPhones. There are three 3G iphones in my family. Right now I feel that I have invested my time and money poorly.

It does seem strange that no news ( aka tv) reports have surfaced yet. Of course other than the dude with the 9mm and his iphone.

    If I read here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhoneOS_versionhistory

The modem firmware (baseband) of the 3G should be 05.11.04 mine is 05.11.07

Does my iPhone 3G have the baseband of the 3GS ???

Ok I can't figure out why I paid 600$ for a phone that locks up. Don't get me wrong when it works it works great but how hard is it to put out another update to fix this they better do it soon!

NANOVIRUS; Mine is a 3G also, with 5.11.07 modem firmware, this must be the problem, we should have 5.11.04. Other users with these problems, check if you have mismatched modem firmware with their 3G or 3GS? According to wikipedia article linked by nanovirus.

Count me in (i didn't want to be left out) of having the mysterious shut-downs problem since installing 3.1. I have to do a reboot in order to get the phone to work again. This started the next day after installing 3.1.

OK Apple, let's get to it and fix it!

I had a 3g which had the random shut off problem. Then I went to the apple store and had it replaced under warranty but still had the comma issue. Then I decided to just upgrade to a 3gs (which had 3.1 already installed) and it has the same issues. On another 3g we have in the house I just googled how to downgrade to 3.0 from 3.1. That seems to have fixed the problem but it will only work on the 3g and if you have a mac (aka it won't work on the 3gs or when using windows). The site I found had an iRecovery file that claims to work on Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. As side note, it DOES NOT work on Tiger. I haven't tried it on Snow Leopard but it does work on Leopard. I'm not sure if I can post the link because I'm sure apple isn't a fan of this solution but since their genius's are worthless for fixing this problem, I figure this might help some of you. The site has the words benm in it and its also the same place you'd go to to get the tethering hack for 3.0.

count me in on this shutdown issue. I can't believe the customer service we get from Apple considering the amount of money we pay for these devices and services. Amazing!

My phone locks up 5-6 times a day. Battery life is awful as well, but I could live with it if it actually worked as a reliable phone.

I'm ready to throw it. I'm on call for a telecom position and have to use an old LG phone because my iPhone isn't reliable enough. This is ridiculous, and will likely be my last Apple OR AT&T purchase.

    iPhone 3G 16GB
    OS Version 3.1
    Modem Firmware 05.11.07

Lockups often happen after hearing the new email tone - at least it doesn't wake when I go to check the email.
