Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

32GB 3GS no Mobile me. 3.1 Exchange push. Had 90 percent battery at a party last night. Was waiting on a freind to call for directions and took my phone out to discover it was dead. Tried the 2 button restart and nothing so I assume the batt was dead. An hour later I took it out hit the power button and got the Apple logo and it booted up with 90 percent bettery. This is very bad. Im switching back to the Blackberry Bold. I need to be reached and if I don't know it died then this is a huge problem

Hey Guys I have the iphone 3G 8gb. I was having the same issues all of you are. I took my phone to apple and they told me to sync my phone to make sure my computer had all my contacts and calendars. They also recommended saving my pics to a folder that later I could transfer back to the phone. They told me to do the restore in itunes but not from a backup. Choose restore as new iphone. You will have to set all personal settings back up. I did this and no longer have any problems. It seems to run a lot faster too and since itunes already had my applications, music and ringtones all I had to sync was my pictures and contacts and apps back. It was pretty easy. I hope this works for all of you. Good luck.

Same here as with everyone else's experience, after the 3.1 upgrade my phone works erratically. I've also noticed the battery being more than half full to completely dead instantaneously. After I reboot, it's back to the previous level.

Apple's phone representative told me to do a system restore which didn't help at all. I called back again today and the 2nd agent set me up for an appointment at the Genius Bar later today.

Coincidentally, I have a I have a friend who works for Apple tech support as a phone agent here in Phoenix and he said this isn't a known common issue. Not good, Apple! Not good!

Thats funny. Apple told me the same thing yesterday at the Genius bar. I told them its all over their website and on yahoo saying the 3.1 update is having issues. How do they not know. I mean really...come on. I just hope they come out with a patch or something and FAST!!!

    Update for me.

I tried to work to see if there was an app causing these random crashes or shut downs. At first I thought it was facebook as it seemed to happen when I was using that app and then locked the iPhone. But I can go hours using it and other apps and it is fine. Then I just pick up my phone and it doesn't respond at all, have to reset it. I did a restore as new and didn't install any third party apps and used it like that for awhile. Still happens, pick it up while locked and totally unresponsive only a reset gets it going again.

Seems totally random when it happens. The other day it didn't happen at all. Last night it happened several times. So far today it has done it 3 times. Right now I have no third party apps installed.

Just back from the apple store and my Genius Bar appt. *They gave me a new iPhone.* (Fortunately mine was still under the original 1-yr warranty.)

The Genius guy said I'd done everything that they expected us to do (I had it Restored to New Phone) and the home button still wasn't working. He found something else that was wonky as well, so he swapped out the SIM card and put it into a new phone.

(However ... this new phone is running 3.01. I think I'm just going to keep it that way for a while.)

Good luck to anyone still wrestling with 3.1 -- but if you do a full Restore to New Phone and it's still not working, take it back to the store. It could be the hardware.

Same experience here - 3 random shutdowns in the last 3 days; one during navigation with Maps, particularly annoying.
If any Genie from APPLE monitors these discussions:
    a) after more than 200 posts, you got to take these issues seriously
    b) PLEASE PLEASE ISSUE A NEW OS VERSION WITHOUT THESE BUGS !!!
    c) This makes me feel like I have a Microsoft phone ... you don't want the iPhone to be a MSPhone, do you?

I was wondering how many other people's phone has turned back on by itself after these random shut downs. I had my phone plugged into my PC to charge overnight and I noticed that the disconnect/reconnect USB sound kept going off. Its my thinking that the phone keeps doing this on/off glitch thought out the day, and if the phone is restarting constantly (whether to your knowledge or not) its going to hurt the battery (yet another complaint with 3.1 for 3G users) Can anyone else confirm that their phone is turning back on after these (just let it go for like 10 mins after the shut down and see if it comes back).

Been having the same issues as a lot of folks it seems. Upgraded to 3.1 Saturday morning, and had random total shutdowns multiple times throughout the day, had no idea it was the "upgrade".
As of this posting, I've tried to restore from my backup before I installed 3.1, and completely resetting the phone to factory defaults and then restoring. No dice either way, keeps putting OS 3.1 back on.
I don't mind issues in software, but at least allow me to revert to a previously stable version for the time being!

Just to add to the list.

Upgraded 16gb iPhone 3G to 3.1 and have lock-up's, crashing that looks like sleep mode and then battery drains flat. Also have slow response to controls and keyboard entry at times. I have tried a reset via new install and it has done nothing to improve the situation.

The worst part is, I never know when it happens since putting the iPhone in sleep mode looks exactly the same as when it crashes, the first sign is either the Apple booting logo appearing after having to hold the power button to boot the phone. Or even worse plugging the iPhone into the charger to discover the battery went flat after a crash/lock-up and not knowing when it happened or how long the iPhone has been dead.

Interestingly my 1st gen ipod touch 8gb with 3.1.1 has had none of these problems.

Really unhappy about this, since we kinda need our mobile phones Apple! I'm just hoping we don't need our phones in an emergency situation to discover the thing is dead due to either a crash or flat battery without warning!

I'm getting this problem too on my 16GB black iPhone. It only happens when I use the Apple headphones to pause and unpause music. Screen goes black and I have to hard reset to get it working again. It's happened about 5 times now.
