Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I think the moral of the story here is...

APPLE'S CUSTOMER SERVICE IS A JOKE and

DO NOT BUY AN IPHONE IF YOU RELY ON YOUR PHONE TO MAKE AND RECEIVE PHONE CALLS.

who knows how many calls ive missed since the 3.1 update.

Thanks a lot Apple. Count me as an ex-customer.

I've got two iPhones, a 3G and a 3GS, this is happening to both of them. They both won't wake up at totally random times. Sometimes they go for a couple hours or even a couple days without having a problem and then sometimes it happens a few times an hour. Sometimes they will turn back on if I try to wake them up after about ten minutes or I have to restart them. But it is happening to BOTH phones. The 3GS is five days old.

2 iPhone 3G's on 3.1 and both are screwed up. Also, 7 people I work with also have the 3.1 update on the 3G and 3GS and all having the same issue. Freezing up when trying to wake up, not syncing with iTunes, frozen phone calls, not telling me when I have voicemails, etc.

I now I have to use my home phone to call my cell phone and check my voice mails. What a total crock.

I'm calling AT&T tonight and seeing if there is any type of contract breach that can get me out of this. I have paid for phone service and I can't get any nor have I had any service for over a week now. Apple is a company, and just like any company if you want to get their attention you go after their bottom line. I'm willing to give up my awesome iPhone for a Vu or similar phone, even a crackberry if I have to. I just want to be able to make/receive phone calls. That shouldn't be asking too much from my cell phone and provider.

UGH, my phone has started doing this pretty much non-stop. Today alone it has done it about 6 times. I have tried resetting on the phone itself, and I tried to do a restore through my itunes but it wouldn't let me. I am livid to say the least, and I have never had problems with my phone so it's obviously the update. GET THIS SH*T FIXED, APPLE!

I have this random mysterious shutdown problem ATLEAST twice a day. I have restored my phone and that has not helped. I call Apple support about the problem and they told me it was my case for my phone that was causing the problem. my case is a hard incase. it doesnt cover any sensors. So i am not sure what to do. Im hoping maybe apple will come out with a new update that will fix this ridiculous problem. its really annoying. It seems to happen after I send a text message and i turn the screen off. every time it does this random shut down I hard restart it(hold down both buttons on the phone). Can anyone help? Its getting really annoying!

There is no fix that doesn't involve a PC and pwn tools to go back to 3.0.1 Apple and their admit nothing then quietly release a fix way of doing things is not good enough in this situation. I'm surprised there is no class action lawsuits threads starting up, as people are losing business calls due to this, myself included.

I think the answer is going to my cell company and requesting a new blackberry. I don't want to but this is actually costing money now.

Add me to the long list. Happened toady for the first time. I upgraded to 3.1 on the 30th and so far, this is the first time I've noticed it. I have an iPhone 3G with 8GB. I did a hard reset and that seemed to work for now. Hope Apple fixes this soon! I've praised Apple numerous times over for their fantastic products and quick, friendly, wonderful support but the fact that it's been 10 days since the update and they haven't even addressed this huge problem really upsets me!

Quick update: working fantabulously. I'll wait 'til tonight to attempt adding apps back on.

It's seriously like the phone had an exersism. Oh bonus: 18 hrs and 75% battery left.

    3.1 honeymoon over.. 23.0 hours.

so looks like an alnigher once more to get a reliable phone back. It did work absolutely perfect; better than its entire existence for those 23 hrs.. so if/when they get it fixed we do have something nice to look forward to.

    i'll be making a cookbook.

My 3G goes into coma mode at least once a day since I upgraded to the latest OS a few weeks ago. When is there going to be a fix for this. Last time I checked there were 70 pages on this topic. Now it is over 130. HELP!!!

For what it's worth, I have noticed some improvements to my phone since I restored as a new phone and then turned off all app notifications.

I was getting multiple comas per day but since doing this restore a few days ago I have only had a couple in total. So not a perfect fix but things have really improved.

I got the steps for restoring as a new phone a few pages back.

Not sure exactly which of these two was the reason for the improvement, perhaps a combination of both. Maybe to be more scientific start by turning off notifications and if that doesn't help then go for the restore?

Anyway, hope you all can get some improvement because this is just the most ridiculous thing I have seen. More's the point I hope Apple get some balls and admit they have screwed up and get a fix to us ASAP!!

Like many, I've experienced the random failure-to-awake from sleep on my iPhone 3G (16 GB). But, it is usually only once a day and often skips a day. Why are our experiences different? Could it be the phone type, though 3GS and 3G are both experiencing it? Does it have anything to do with size (i.e., 8GB vs. 16GB?). Probably not. Or, does it have something to do with the particular apps we choose for our phone? If one uses a net-intensive app, are they more likely to experience failures? Or ..... is this all entirely random with no rhyme or reason associated with whose phone fails, and when? I know my calls are ok (though I am a very light phone user), I use a very memory intensive app, a GPS app -- which works just fine and doesn't fail as a rule. I also use my ipod portion heavily, with no problems. Most of my apps are not net-users. The "coma failure" on my phone usually occurs when the phone has gone to sleep and I can't wake it without a restart -- the most common experience apparently.

I suspect Apple is pulling many all-nighters on this (as they should). Perhpas their silence is due to some sensitive revelation associate with the 3.1 update. Maybe some critical problem emerged (security?) that cannot be publicly divulged. In any case, I'm sure they realize the negative costs they incur with each day this goes on.

Has Apple communicated what they are going to do about this problem yet? Looking at the replies, this seems to be a huge problem with many of Apple's customers.

I hope they do communicate something. We deserve at least some acknowledgement of the issue from Apple.

In my opinion, this is the worst iPhone bug since the original release.
