Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I just spent an hour at the apple store...they say they have not heard of such issues, and made it sound like I was crazy...I drove all the way down to the city this morning for a Dr. appointment only to find out they had called and left a message that the doc would not be in today...wasted 3 hours of my day..this is not acceptable...

Might I suggest printing a few pages off of this discussion group to have on hand the next time some apple genius attempts to convince you that yours is a rare case.

    Grrrrrrr.

Unbelievable, I would recommend showing the idiot in the Apple store this thread on your phone, but it would probably just be in a coma anyway.

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Has this problem been resolved yet? My iphone has been freezing for weeks now ever since the update and I'm getting tired of it

First off let me preface this by saying that i AM having these commas. I now have my second appt with an Apple store to attempt to get this issue resolved. That beeng said....

The service i have received from Apple support has been VERY good. They have been responsive and truly seem to want to fix my issue. I read a lot of these posts and people go nuts. I see claims of "having this issue for weeks" Even though at the time of the post the firmware was even available for weeks. If one expects to be taken seriously be honest. Is this an issue? Sure. Does it affect all phones? Nope. That makes it very hard for any company to pinpoint and solve. Many of you act like its so simple. Would i like to see an acnowledgemet from Apple, of course. Still Apple is a huge business and decisions are often delayed until the actual issue is known and has a solution. My point is at least for me despite this issue the iphone has been the best phone ive ever had. For those of you who want to get a different one all because of this issue i forsee you posting on future forums all your disapointments, for which id say there would be many starting with a large void where apps should be. Thats it im off my soapbox. Just wanted to add a bit of sanity in this thread, after all its just a phone not the device that cures cancer.

@andrewwynn; so you actually were able to downgrade the (baseband) modem firmware from 05.11.07 to 04.26.08, following your steps on the top of pg. 131? Please advise...

yes i was; it was a non-pleasant experience to say the least.

I may be doing a second run tonight, since after accidentally re-installing 3.1 yesterday. I think i'm going to restore my iPhone settings to see if it goes slo-mo again before deciding to retrograde to 3.01 again.

the path to working on my phone:

    3.01 -> 3.1 = coma
3.0 (jail break); boots but no cell service (mismatched baseband suspect)
3.1 (jail break); still no cell
3.1 unlock with yelowsn0w (i only did that because i left it 3.1 for a day because i needed sleep!)
    3.1 baseband downgrade
    3.0 jail break downgrade
    3.01 legit apple firmware

so.. getting all the parts in place to make that happen was non-trivial to say the least!

at this moment, the phone is operating better than it ever has during the non-crash phase.. it crashed ONCE 23 hrs after the upgrade and battery life is fantastic. It's very responsive. I'm thinking of keeping it 3.1 so that i can send the crash logs to apple.

    @ ATP11

People aren't so much angry that there is still in issue. They're angry because Apple hasn't done so much as even make any acknowledgment of the issue's very existence. On top of this most are being lied to by being told that they're not aware of any problems. There wouldn't be half as many angry people here if Apple would just make a two sentence press release stating "Sorry about the problem. We're working on it". Is that really so hard as opposed to covering everything up?

EXACTLY what Neose7en said. It isn't so much that they aren't being "helpful" and trying to fix the problem. But if I talk to one more Apple or AT&T person that tells me that it is MY PROBLEM or there is "no known issue" they will be digging my phone out of an unpleasant orifice.

Look back at the very first post in this thread. Did it really start on 9/10? Almost a month has gone by and Apple still refuses to acknowledge the problem. I've read where testers said there were issues but they rushed this release because they couldn't delay MMS any longer. I was doing just fine emailing pictures and ACTUALLY BEING ABLE TO GET PHONE CALLS ON MY PHONE.

Screw Apple. This darn phone is the only Apple product I have ever bought and this is the exact reason why. Say what you want about Microsoft, but at least when something ***** they come right out and admit it and announce what they plan to do to fix it. Apple has most of you zombies so brainwashed that you think they can do no wrong, and some of you are even saying we shouldn't be upset because "they are trying to fix the problem". Are you kidding me? Step 1 in "fixing a problem" is admitting there is a problem and not having some incorrectly titled "Genius" tell me there is nothing wrong with the 3.1 update.

understand frustration and wanting an answer, id like one too. I' have had a different experience though. When i went in the apple store i was told that i was the tenth person that day with
the the issue so i would assume "lying" to customers isnt the official apple policy but rather an individuals respomse or perhaps they were indeed unaware. And tech support on the phone both times never denied it when i brought up the issues on the forums.

Now i got a good chuckle when i read someone post that at least Microsoft admits when there is an issue as i have a PC With Vista that i can not load new software on as when i do, it cant restart. Oh and there way more forum posts on this and the issue has been over a year and a half since ive had this issue and found forum posts about it as well. I have yet to find any tespomse from microsoft much less a fix.

ATP11, have you lost any business or important calls because your phone has been in a coma yet? It's happened more than once over here, that's why so many people, including me, are mad.

I've called support but there is nothing they can do, I might have to buy a new phone because I can't put up with this.

I am having the same problem.

How do I restore my phone? What does that do exactly?

I can deal with it cutting off ever now and then BUT I'm afraid of it totally crashing and me losing all my numbers and stuff........How would I go about backing up my information....Any suggestions??
