Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

this has been happening to me for a while, if i remember correctly it started with an attempt to update the software. second attempt got stuck on a few tracks being copied over. not sure if that is relevant. in my general about settings it lists the track numbers (a few lines worth)

mostly turns off randomly and have to reboot or just reset. several times it has shut down for 3-7 days. randomly turning on when i tried once again to usb charge the phone. had tried to do this over a dozen times prior with nothing only to respond by chance? it was evening when it turned back on pst.

this is more than frustrating, it has cost me time and money since my phone is my source of connection to clients. what has apple recommended or offered as a fix? should i get a new phone? i can't continue losing my phone connect for several days at a time.

reading through posts and hoping everyones notes are helping the effort in finding a fix

from reading the board, turning off my 3g.

I've been having problems since the update to OS 3.1. It has been very random my iPhone will be asleep and not wake up. The only fix is to reset it. It's becoming more and more frequent. I only registered on this site so I could add my complaint so Apple could see it's a big problem they need to FIX.

Just adding to the stats. I've been experiencing the sames intermittant lockup (coma) when my phone is idle. It worked fine for almost a year prior to the 3.1 upgrade.

    Hello,

I have two things to say about this:

    1)
    Add me too!
More or less I had all the problems described here.

    2)
I downgraded three days ago from 3.1 to 3.0.1 (iPhone 3G). Baseband is still on the version that arrived with 3.1 (05.11.07).
Problems are all gone now. The phone works as it did before the upgrade to 3.1.

The downgrade is easy to do. There are quite some pages to help you. Google is your friend.
    Some keywords are:
    - download the firmware 3.0.1 and copy it to the relevant iTunes directory
    - download iRecovery
    - SYNC your iPhone before starting
    - sync it once the downgrade has finished
    - you will loose SMS and MMS (but maybe a restore of your last backup will work, but I did not try that).

    Personal note:
    - now that I downgraded, I don't miss any functionality from 3.1
    - it is my first upgrade that gave me real troubles....so.... apple's average is still good
    - Apple still think they can treat customers like ****....but since we are still here, arguing about their behaviour instead of buying google and windows phones, I guess they are right :-/

Hope the downgrade will help someone here.

    Sth.

Second trip to Apple store, was told that Apple is aware of the issue, and hopefully a fix is in the pipeline. They also gave me the option of a replacement phone, which I took.

Add me to the list. I tried a restore to 3.1 factory settings but it kept going into a coma. I noticed that one time it did it right after an email came in while the device was asleep. When I went to unlock, pushing the home button didn't bring it back to life.

Anyway, what seems to have worked for me is to disable push completely and disable notifications. I can still get email, contacts, etc. fine via fetch.

Worth a try for anyone stuck.

And it just happened again. Went to use my phone, black screen. Started the reboot, got the "no power left" picture.

All the instructions for reverting to 3.01 I've seen are for Macs. Any PC ones? Please reply with link.

I hope Apple does something about this soon. Not only is it really ******* annoying, but now I'll likely not have a phone for my day trip this Saturday. I had been hoping to journal the trip, now I just hope to have reserve power in case my kids need to reach me.

    Apple, fix 3.1!!!

I really do now wonder just what is causing the coma...

It seems to be related to the phone not being able to come out of sleep under a complex set of conditions (or it would be happening to every phone all the time and would have been found thru testing).

Keeping something running (like a playing audiobook) apparently prevents it from sleeping which avoids the hang.

OK, so what are ALL OF US doing wrong then? Me, I put it down or put it in my pocket, go to use it, and brick.

I'm all too familiar with QA. Something this widespread really should have been caught. Shame on Apple for releasing such a crappy update. And if this is related to AT&T/3G, shame on both AT&T and Apple for such horrible infrastructure support.

Yeah, I'm guilty of picking up the phone and wanting to use it.
Maybe I shouldn't be using my middle-finger to try to start it. Maybe that's the problem.

I'm trying the ipod running full time trick. I've got "it's a small world" running in loop mode. Maybe the phone will get sick of hearing it and decide to wake from the coma.

"A Small World"? That's cruel! The phone might just go coma to stop it.

    PEOPLE I FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!!

What I did was simply to turn off the auto-lock! I have not experienced a shut down for weeks now, it has not shut down once and I can use all of the other options: 3G, WIFI, Ipod etc.. You just need to change the auto-lock setting to never and Voila!

P.S. If you charge it over night don't worry the battery will last almost a day or until you arrive home.
Well its a temporary solution not a definite one but it helps!

I did this as well when I first started having the issue ... the only problem is when the phone is not open. It will shut down and go into a coma. Otherwise I have been leaving it plugged in while at home. This remedy doesn't completely rid you of the problem but it does help.

Count me in with same issues. Just in case someone from Apple is counting.
Phone goes dead about once every 2 days and battery life has dropped alarmingly.
