Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

If you use Apple's MobileMe service on your iPhone I suggest you read on...

If you are using Apple's MobileMe service with an iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.1 you are most likely experiencing the following problems:

    • Rapid battery drain when connected to a Wifi base station.
    • Random iPhone app crashes.
    • Random pauses and slow interface (for example, sliding between screens).

The problem does not affect iPhones running iPhone OS 3.0.1.

Turning off "Push" emails or turning of Calendar and Bookmark syncing does not resolve the problem. Until Apple releases an iPhone OS software update the only fix I've come across is to remove the MobileMe account from the iPhone 3G

Contacts, Calendars, Notes and Bookmarks can be synchronised with the iPhone using iTunes syncing. Removing the MobileMe account fixed all the iPhone slow-downs and iPhone app crashes. I expect (I hope) Apple release an update to the iPhone OS to fix this (major) problem.

Just wanted to add to the list, but I am also experiencing the behavior where I am trying to wake my phone from sleep (dark screen) and it does not respond. At first I thought it might be the battery, but when I hold down the power/sleep button in an attempt to power the phone off, the phone does not respond.

I have to do a reset of the phone using the power and home buttons in order to revive the phone. I tried calling the phone just now to see what the behavior would be and it turns out that it goes to voicemail. Very annoying problem and I really hope that they fix it soon.

Same issue here. Started the morning after I upgraded to 3.1. Usually happens 2 to 3 times a day, though sometimes it skips a day. Phone usually gets hot also.

Just got off the phone from apple, and after 2000 replies to this thread, they are still claiming it to not be a software issue, and they won't give out any information about when a "fix" for 3.1 will be released. What a joke.

They wanted to book me an appointment at my local apple store, until they realised they are completely booked out... I wonder why.

Maybe we should all forward our mobile bills to apple for this month and they can pay it?

Not sure if someone posted about this earlier on this massive post...but I had the same problem and when I changed *Autolock (in Settings>General)* to *2 minutes* the random shut downs/freeze stopped.

I know its a workaround but it works for me....:)

Solution: *Remove the MobileMe account from iPhone running iPhone OS 3.1 to fix slow-downs and crashes.* A future update to iPhone OS might resolve the problem with iPhone and MobileMe.

I mentioned this in previous post to this thread but it was buried away in text – it might not have been clear.

I am having the same problem with my Iphone 3G , but i cannot get it to come on at all now ... even with all the hard resets. This is very frustrating as my warranty expired a few weeks ago and I have no phone to use at this point.

Apple needs to get on the ball and figure this whole thing out as I saw people in an AT&T store buying a new Iphone and boy are they going to be upset if they update to 3.1 and have the same problems. Wanna bet Apple will lose customers real quick if they don't get this 3.1 update off their servers?!

It's been a day and i still can't get off the black screen.

Could this have caused permanent damage to my battery. I had zero problems until i updated to the 3.1 OS ... problems started the very next morning.

I am very disappointed with this problem - If i have to pay anything to get this fixed (since this problem was caused by them) I will be very upset!

You may be onto something, my iPhone 3G started going into a coma only after turning on 'find my iphone' and logging into mobile me to check the iphone location.

If no one is taking your advise is because:
    1. we don't have a Mobile me account,
    2. we already tried every suggestion that everyone here in the post has
recommend and the symptoms came back after a few days.

The only solution that I see that has worked for those that are out of warranty, is to downgrade to 3.0.1 and for those of us that still have warranty is to call apple care or go to the Genius Bar and try to get the phone replace. I had to replace my phone twice. The first time I replaced my phone was because after the 3.1 update, I wasn't able to make calls, every time I attempted to dial a # I would get the call failed message and the only way I was able to make a call was to turn off and on the phone and dial. I had to this every time I had to make call. I got a new phone and the first thing I did was update to 3.1, because I didn't know that there was an issue with 3.1 this time my phone would crash every 2 hours, I wasn't able to make call even if my phone was showing that I had 4 bars and 3G, also every time that my phone connected to the bluetooth of my car the phone would go in to a coma mode. It took me 3 visits to the Genius Bar to get my replaced this time.

This is what apple needs to do with the next update.
    1. Apple needs to refund our monthly bill payment or extend the warranty of our phone from one more year.

    2. Apple needs to let us downgrade our phones. This is freaking ridiculous that I am paying around $85 a month for having a iTouch in my pocket.

We should all call AT&T and tell them that we are going to get out of our contract and refuse to pay the penalty, because we haven't been able to use our phone for a month. I am tired of getting the run around Apple telling me that is At&T at fault and AT&T telling is Apple.

    THIS IS EFFING BS.

I've been on Edge for 5 days now & no more iPod phone (a phone that looks like it's working but does not receive text, calls or browser). Luckily I haven't experienced the true coma's & I hate to add some "goodness" to the post but my battery life is remarkable now & I even gained some gigs back!

2000+ posts is not a sign they should ignore.

Just wanted to add to the chorus here, hope Apple starts paying attention.

My phone (3G) was doing fine in 3.1 until about 10 days ago, when it randomly shut down with half battery. A quick plug into the wall fixed that. But this weekend it died completely - no response, no charge, no presence in iTunes. Nothing I did (and I followed all of the Apple support guides to the letter) helped it whatsoever. Thankfully it was under warranty (I got it 6 months to the day before its demise) so Apple replaced it. I just need to keep hoping that this doesn't happen again in another 6 months and a day...

But now, 3 days later, my fiancee's iPhone started doing the same thing: random shutdown, at first it looked like it wasn't charging. It's back, but it was really scary stuff. Apple, take notice: this is a problem that needs fixing!
