Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I now have a Console log - I was next to my iMac when it the iPhone locked up again. I plugged it in and ran the iphone config utility. When the iPhone came back to life it dumped the console log prior to, during and after the lock up. Now who in Apple do I send this to?

I have noticed this too--although it doesn't happen all the time, the iPhone 3.1 "coma mode" is frequently triggered when I pause/unpause music with the Apple headset. Of course it also goes into this mode in what seems like a totally random fashion as well.

The other problem I have is my Sony E bluetooth HBH-DS980 headset can no longer stream music from the phone when it goes into "sleep" mode. The music starts to skip like a scratched CD. I've never had this problem before the upgrade.
Anyone else with a similar issue with their bluetooth headsets?

I believe after a crash and then connecting the phone/pod to itunes it automatically sends at least the crash log to Apple, which leads me to assume they have a ton of data right now .

Well the latest now is that my phone doesn't work and it doesn't allow me to dial out. I can receive calls but when selecting the green "Phone" icon on my iPhone, it doesn't allow me to select Favorites, Contacts, or any other option on the Phone screen. Only the "Home" key works which allows me to exit the "Phone" application.

    Back to the Apple store!

I'm having the same trouble, the phone just stops responding and I cant do anything with pressing home or power button, tried number of things and it wont work. At times I have to force shut down and then restart. Seems like a major bug. The worst is, I've the connection and no-one can contact me coz my iPhone stopped responding and all calls go to my voice message.
Is apple doing anything for this?

By pressing the power button and the "home" button at the same time I was able to perform a "hard reset" and that fixed the "Phone" issue that I had earlier. Nevertheless, I think I'm still going to meet with the Apple Genius folks tomorrow to figure out why this iPhone is behaving so flaky.

The random crashing is only happening for me while the phone is synched up to the bluetooth in my car... about half way to work (15 mins) the car says "bluetooth disconnected" and yep... the phone has crashed. P.I.T.A... Apple cutting corners in the SQA department?

Just like juanpitillo's post above, my "Coma" happened at about 10am, and 10pm the night before....

Mine goes blank and the power and home are unresponsive for a few minutes...

    Anyone else getting this?

Edit: Also happens occasionally when connecting with my BT Parrot MKi 9200 car kit...

    Matt

Hey, Apple! The WISE thing to do would be to allow us to at least downgrade to 3.0.1! We know it can be done, just let us do it! I've tried dozens of times using iTunes 8.2 as well as 9 and it simply doesn't work. And yes, I'm actually getting it into DFU mode... For those of us who use cellphones as our ONLY phone communications (ie. no landline at home) this is a MAJOR PROBLEM!!!

I absolutely agree. This can be a life threatening situation for some. APPLE has to do something about it quick. I don't understand how a product like this, with so MANY bugs could even get out of QA??????

And, for what? LP mode and Home Sharing which requires me to share my password, yes, the same password that can access my credit card to download from iTunes with my Kids, ummmm Nope.

Steve go back home and let those who are well run the company!!!! Please.

You're confusing the iTunes update with the iPhone OS update. Let's keep on topic here and avoid attacks against Steve Jobs - I'm reasonably sure that the issue with this update has nothing to do with his illness, nor his ability to manage a multi-billion dollar company.

Update on things tried so far:

Reset to factory settings - Did not resolve the issue.
Restore iPhone - Did not resolve the issue
Downgrade to previous OS - Unable to do so, Error 1015 in iTunes
Set AutoLock to Off - Did not resolve the issue
Deleted email account from phone - Did not resolve the issue
Removed all 3rd party Apps from phone - Did not resolve the issue

Thank GOD I found this thread. My phone locked up on me...no lights, no sound, no nothing...I was about to cry thinking my battery had been fried. I plugged it in, no charge either. I also had to hard reset.

I tried calling iPhone support (of course it's after business hours. nothing goes wrong during WORKING hours!) and I couldn't even log in to set up a call request! You all saved my sanity for the evening

I've read that restoring as a new phone, not from a back up helps. Although I haven't tried it myself. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

To add, I have tried all the list above and even the extreme of making sure the iPhone never goes to sleep and leaving the screen activated all the time and it still does it, just incase it was some kinda of sleep mode weirdness.
