Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Yesterday I rolled back to 3.0.1 and it has worked like a charm since. I had up to 7 shut downs a day (coma) and I had other issues as well.
With 3.0.1 my Iphone is more responsive, faster and all those strange pauses like a process went berserk in the background is gone. I just hated when the keys on the keyboard froze for a couple of seconds. Apps starts faster and are more responsive. My mission for today is to visit Apple store and make him eat his words about me causing hardware problems on my iPhone. APPLE - IT IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE.

BTW I've tried all possible configurations of solutions with 3.1 and none of them worked, I also restored and wasted hours on that. The only solution at the moment is to roll back too 3.0.1.

Solution: *Remove the MobileMe account from iPhone running iPhone OS 3.1 to fix slow-downs and crashes.* A future update to iPhone OS might resolve the problem with iPhone and MobileMe.

I mentioned this in previous post to this thread but it was buried away in text – it might not have been clear.

I know people are trying to help but degrading all the services I pay for just to suit a critical bug that apple shipped is not an option, I use this service as my main email service so thats the reason its on the phone. So people are removing all their applications, turing off 3G, disabling email, downgrading the firmware (with added risks) etc with the result that the phone (and services) they paid for are now almost useless. This is not an option, the only solution is for Apple to release a firmware fix, its now been almost ONE MONTH since this critical bug was shipped and the silence from Apple along with total confusion from their so called support. Bit of a PR mess for the company that is paranoid about PR control.

Turning 3G off, autolock and removing mobileme account fail to work for me. Still crashing, battery life still down. And the instructions link on page 116 on how to downgrade to 3.01 has stopped working. Can anyone re-instruct? (I'm happy to move to an email account and discuss away from Apple). I am off to Apple store to see if they can help and if not a trip to the solicitors for legal advice. I'm paying monthly for a useless ipod! I'm new to Apple last year and can't believe their blatant silence on an issue caused by them. Back to microsoft for me.......

Having restored my iPhone using iTunes 9.0.1 I can report that the problem appears to have been fixed - no comas for a week now.

    Hi,
dont know if anyone else has had this problem but its only occured since updating to 3.1. Sometimes, (only maybe 1 once.twice a day) i cannot wake my device up from standby. i press the on/off key, nothing, press the home key, nothing. after a few minutes the phone wakes up and i see my wallpaper and slide to unlock (which is disabled when i try to swipe) then it disapperrs again and the only way i can get back into the phone is by doing the two button soft reboot press. also i have noticed random but less frequent crashes of the device. i am also having major issues like other users with battery performance.
i have tried everything from a restore with backup to restore as new iphone, restore on another copy of itunes, another usb port.......the phone itself works perfect, but for these small niggles.

aaahhhh c`mon Apple - sort this out - I am losing that warm glow that my iphone has given me for the last 2 years.
I could get a pay as you go LG that would be more reliable at the moment!

Apparently 142 pages of other people's complaints aren't enough to get this fixed yet, so I figured I'd better throw in my 2 cents: I have this problem too! Running out of patience...

iv had my iphone 2 years now, im due an upgrade and as much as i love my iphone and its been the apple of my eye (and the talk of many a conversation.....ooh look at this app iv just downloaded !!) - i have to say im saddended by the lack of support apple has provided in the last 2 software updates. i feel im losing my patience with this and as much as i was looking forward to upgrading to the 3gs device (i currently have the 3g 8gb) - im now thinking of reverting back to blackberry (my phone before iphone was an 8120) simply for performance and reliability. obviously i dont want to lose my iphone as its fantastic and i love it to bits, but i simply cannot go on with this current farce.......shame on you apple for not sorting this known problem out sooner !! please please fix this so i can get a 3gs device in confidence !!!!

I will be upgrading one phone soon and then 3 or 4 more will shortly be off contract. There is no way in **** I will purchase another Apple product due to the arrogance Apple has displayed in this issue. I would sooner go back to a "dumb' phone than give Apple more money to be disrespected the way this has gone. Hey Apple FU!

I understand the sentiments Garmy. I don't mind crashes and bugs and update issues etc etc, it's the complete lack of response from Apple that is so frustrating. I just got back from the Apple store and when I asked if there was any way to let Apple know politely that there might be an issue with this update he looked at me as if I had asked him in Russian. They don't have to admit anything just acknowledge that they are hearing their customers and will look into it. Palm here I come....

Also having the same issue here- After 3.1 update, total lock-ups with the phone quietly warming-up and draining the battery. Several total restores / reinstalls, two trips to the Apple store... They even gave me a new phone... but the problem persists. Apple's silence on this issue is unbelievable! I wanted to throw in my two cents as well.

I am experiencing the same issues. We have two iPhones 3G at OS v3.1. Both hanging and draining the battery. None of the "fixes" helped. 3G on and off, Wifi on and off, lock on and off, etc. The only option left is to downgrade to 3.0.1.

I advise anyone with a twitter account and/or a Facebook account to let your peers know of the problem. Maybe some public shame will get Apple to act.
