Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

OK, I've tried turning off 3G and increasing autolock time and, it still hasn't completely stopped the comas.

I'm reluctant to downgrade as it doesn't seem to work for everyone and I'm not that technically savvy. I don't want to do anything that further exacerbates any issues.

My battery still drains quickly and I'm still experiencing issues with autobrightness, WiFi reception (when trying to use WiFi), and consistently receiving all texts and calls.

I'm getting tired of this. Using a phone shouldn't be stressful. Apple, please chime in soon. 2000+ posts, I believe, if customer service is a priority to you, deserves a response.

This whole thing is almost to the point of getting laughable. I keep seeing the Apple and Mac commercials on TV, especially making the ones making fun of Vista, yet I've NEVER had a minutes problem with Vista. I never lost an email, never lost any communication and it never caused the computer to shut down without me knowing about. I don't think Apple has one bit of room to talk any longer.

I remember one time when MS sent out one of the Tuesday updates to XP that totally FUBARed something. Within a couple of days that sent out an update saying that the previous update wasn't up to par and this one fixed all the problems. Personally, I can much more accept a company that can admit that they are human and make mistake than one that acts like that they never heard of the word.

Put your feedback here- http://www.apple.com/feedback/ if you haven't already and they might get the message.
    Pass it on!

This thread is so scary. Over 200 thousand views, 143 pages long, and over 2,000 replies. I've stayed at firmware 3.0.1 on my 3Gs because of this thread (and the "battery" thread with a mere 120 thousand views). :O

I'm going to try not using safari, see if the problem still occurs. Can't hurt.

Exactly the same issue as everyone else describes. I have 3g-16gb (not jailbroke) that worked without ANY issues until I installed 3.1. Now it will go comatose an average of about three times a day. A hard restart will always force it to wake up (i.e. I don’t always have to plug it in). It will sometimes wake up out of its coma without a reset if I give it 10-20 minutes. I have restored it twice; once with auto sync and once with manual. Neither restore was effective in resolving the matter. It will sometimes go a day or two without issue, but typically returns to its prior shenanigans with a vengeance (a lock up 8-10 times/day). Yesterday it went comatose; by the time I noticed, the back of it had generated a respectable amount of heat and the battery had drained from full to about 25%.

i did notice that safari was the program that kept 'running out of memory' when monitoring the console log.

what is always interesting to me in the bug-fix updates iPhone / mac-os-x etc.. sometimes but rarely there will be a note like 'various bug fixes' in the list of what's included but usually that's not there.

It will be very nice to find out they found out exactly what caused the problem so it can be actually fixed, rather than various changes coincidentally make it more stable but not actually fix the underlying cause. (probably more often the case than the former).

let us know if you still crash/coma anyhow.

working on 70 hrs with ONE coma, (at 23), more importantly, haven't had a single other hiccup; no slow-down, no (known) missed calls, i've gotten voice-mails, CID, etc.

I'm going to put all my programs (on the order of 140) back on and see if i can 'break' it. if it will run this good with my programs back on i would consider my phone cured.. if I 're-acquire the curse' I would find that very interesting.

I think i'll actually put my songs and 3GB of photos back on first. I think that the iPHone 'sees' stored data like that as just 'stuff on a hard drive' and has no bearing on stability; only running programs affect stability. Only apple apps will run in the background (ironically to ensure stability) as far as i know.. so even having 140 programs should not change stability when they are not running.

I wish i had another comatose 3G to try a fix on it, whilst i sure hope i don't reacquire the bug! most painful two weeks of computerdom for me, and i have had some real doozies.

the accidental re-install of 3.1 was a very happy accident. Maybe apple can release an 'iPhone Deep Restore' application that really resets the phone to zero before putting 3.1 back on. I believe the comabug is caused by some 'gremlin' that is left behind during even a DFU install. (what else could it possibly be?)... somehow my phone when going through the bazillion hoops it went through, erased or replaced whatever that gremlin was so now it's behaving how most 3.1 phones are. (quite possibly some memory leak etc that causes a crash once in a while, but otherwise performing awesomely)

musicvan, your post made me laugh.
I am SO glad to know I am not alone with this frustrating problem!! I will patiently (more like impatiently!) await a new update from Apple/AT&T.

I have the same issue. I took my iPhone to the store yesterday and the support team told me they knew there was an issue and they were working it. I am surprised Apple has not posted something on its website or has addressed the issue directly with customers through email, like they did with Mobile Me. I use my phone for work and have missed multiple calls due to phone shutdowns. I think is our right to know what is Apple doing to solve the issue, expected time of resolution or at least revert back to the 3.0 update until the problem is resolved.

Here is some good news! Finally!

A miracle happened; the coma problem with my iPhone is vanished since the last 24 hours, just like that!

Approximately 3 days ago I tried the last so called remedy: resetting networks and turning fraud control off.. results: none

Before that I had it restored 2 times... results: none.

Now its back to normal again. Its kind of scary. More scary is the total silence of Apple on the matter; not even an announcement of a scheduled release date of 3.1.1 or 3.2.

Well, I am a happy dude with my iPhone working again; for as long as it lasts .... Hope you all will experience this miracle in your (iPhone)life soon, if it doesn't happen: keep pushing Apple as I am 100% sure its an OS 3.1 bug!
